Following their usual pattern of late, Purdue lost the first set convincingly 21-25 and won the 2nd set even more convincingly 25-14. Big news is that freshman Taylor Anderson started at center and has been playing great. Myers also is such an asset.

Purdue wins 4th set overwhelmingly 25-17. Purdue hitting 0.347 for the match compared to SMU’s 0.194. Taylor Anderson continues to be so impressive along with freshmen Heaney (and of course Chicoine) along with 2nd years Myers and Hudson.

Purdue wins the 4th set and the match 25-23 In a closely contested set. Well deserved win. I believe Taylor Anderson is our setter for the rest of the season, all things being equal.

Hudson and Chicoine both had double/doubles and played magnificently. Tomorrow we are the underdogs against Kentucky - it will not be easy.

Just got home from watching the game in Holloway. The second and third sets were really fun to watch. Purdue was hitting on almost all cylinders. Our passing was very good so we were ‘in system’ most of the time during those 2 sets. And it was really nice to watch us with so many offensive weapons. Hudson looked like she’s recovered from whatever ailment she had. Was really impressed with Myers in this match.
Also nice to have a setter who can help at the net. Anderson was one of the leading blockers and also had 3 kills.
Starters were Hudson, Chicoine, Myers, Colvin, Anderson and Hornung, with Schemerhorn at libero.

Loved watching that game. Taylor Ander is gonna be a great one! Colvin and Anderson need to work out their connection but LOVE what Myers and Grace H added. I’m a little confused about the coverage on the tip but that was fun to watch. SMU had just knocked off Baylor so they are a solid team. Touch match today but we sure are gritty!

Would you explain “coverage on the tip”? It is unclear to me (because I have no real VB experience) what you are referring. Thanks for your thoughts.

SMU will likely be a tourney team capable of a sweet 16 appearance (likely final 32), nice win, doesn’t get easier with Ky lurking. Volleyball puts a huge emphasis on scheduling, it would be nice to see 2-3 cupcakes yearly so players deep on the bench could play, doesn’t work that way, you get punished for scheduling gimmies.

Anderson and Colvin had a few great connections but also a few that were off. The funniest one was in set 4 when Taylor set a quick set to the middle and Raven was not at the right spot for her approach. She still reacted quickly enough to spike it, but hit it straight over the scorer’s table. She had a sheepish grin after that one. But there was also one where the ball was tight to the net and Taylor set a quick one handed set to Colvin who hit it with perfect timing for a kill.

I doubt Dave would agree with you on this. He has repeatedly said this summer that tough scheduling is what gets you good seeding in the NCAA and helps you prepare for the brutal Big Ten schedule. He says he is happy that there is not a game they can “take off.”

I know he very much wants to host the first round this year And thinks that will only happen by having an excellent RPI.

When they tip it over the block and our defense can’t react. It’s a 50/50 call playing defense. The opposing hitters (espec if they are experienced) are reading the defense a second before the swing. If the defense is hedging the bet on a hard hit they play back a bit. It just seems to me that if you are getting burned on that tip take a step in. That being said- a good hitter will read that and you will eat a ball… Having watched the Kentucky game we seem to have a “whole” in the middle of the floor. I imagine we are heading our bets in others area but teams have taken advantage of that several times. I’m not sure if it’s missed reads or a purposeful game plan. Question Doc since you clearly watch our volleyball team- Ali H. seems to be struggling to me. What do you see? Also why don’t we put Emily Brown in more often to serve for Colvin since we are saving so many subs with Hudson and Chloe? Every time Colvin is in backrow after her serve the opposing hitters target her and we almost always lose the point.

About Ali I think she has not, so far, been as sterling in her defense as she has been. I wonder if some of that is some internalized disappointment that Schermerhorn returned and she is not playing libero. But that is just speculation on my part. And it seems to me that Coach has placed less emphasis on the def specialists this year than in the past although in the last few games he has used the DS’s more. Of course, a lot of this is having two excellent players who play the full rotation.

Thanks for your easily understood explanation of “coverage on the tip.” It will be interesting to see if adjustments are made.
