Purdue Continues to Define Itself in Wins

"But they are young. They are inexperienced. They haven't been on display or defined for the consuming audience.

So here Fletcher Loyer is, introducing himself to Nebraska, again, scoring a new career-high 27 points, and taking an absurd 10 three-pointers in the first half to do it.

Here's Braden Smith, another true freshman guard, quietly with a rogue's grace and bravado, sliding below national attention, but coaches are paying attention. Fred Hoiberg can define Smith and his play.

"Smith, you know, I don't think gets nearly enough credit. He's, in my opinion, as good as any freshman in the country with what he does: picking up full court, his toughness, and his ability to make shots and get to the rim. And just how he runs the team," Fred Hoiberg told us after the game.

Smith did not score 49 points in two games against Hoiberg's Cornhuskers. That's Loyer, who has hit a game winner and six threes in the span of a little more than a week. Both of them are young actors, new to the screen, true freshman, but when they get on stage, the spotlight can't get enough of them.

The sneaky one and the sharp shooter."
