Tough to argue with that order. 1 and 2 are locks. The order of 3-6 could be up for debate, but those classes are really close.

I hope the 2017 class pans out well and finishes at #3 (or higher) by the time they leave. Purdue basketball will be in good shape if that's the case

I think it’s a little early to rank 2017 that high. Certainly could end up there, but I think hands down 2012, 2006, and 2015 had better players and greater impact right now.

Right, if you were to rank 2013 a year later its a decent recruiting class that had decent grad transfers. Of course, it didn't work out, but they were all decent players.

I'll also ask this: could the 2019 class be as good or better than 2007 or 2014?

Obviously I'm not referring to the present class in place, since it's well-known that the staff is not done recruiting for 2019.

We are all but out on TJD. To give evidence, Painter hasn't watched them this month. Brantley was at one of their games today, but that was it. Miller has been at all of their games, and Izzo has been at most. Those are his final 2.

Like I said, a long shot for TJD. A big man grad transfer or an up and comer HS senior big would make it a great class too.

Good thread ... My list ended up being pretty close. I think you underrated Swanigan and Cline a bit. Cline will be a solid long-term role player and Swanigan was a first team all-American. Hill turned out to be a solid grad transfer.

You also overrated the Kramer class IMO. I loved Kramer as well, but him and Grant are not better than Swanigan's class. 06 with Davis, who was about equal to Kramer overall, and AJ Hammons beats those two out.

Last year's class hasn't totally proven it yet, but they have clearly showed either talent or ability throughout. I'm a big believer in Nojel and Haarms as well. Wheeler and Sasha seem more likely than others in the past to live up to their hype. Could theoretically get to No. 1.

I even think Carsen and Spike are ahead. If someone offered me a trade of Carsen for Kramer and Grant, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I could see Carsen pulling this small group to 3.

(Didn't want to rank the 18 class without ever seeing 1 of them play.)

My list:

14. 2011 (Donnie Hale, Jacob Lawson) WOW!

13. 2005 (Tarrance Crump, Korey Spates, Chris Lutz, Marcus Green, Nate Minnoy, Marcus White)

11. 2009 (D.J. Byrd, Kelsey Barlow, Sandi Marcius, Patrick Bade)

I might have had the 2006 class too high but besides one solid year from Gordon Watt before he was dismissed, Keaton and Chris were very productive four-year starters for the Boilermakers.

#5 and #8 too low... ..any class with a NCAA All American in it...is a heck of a hall....any program would love those guys. They are the coveted difference makers .

#3, 4 too high.

fair enough

I could argue that Purdue only got two years out of Swanigan while they got four out of Grant and Kramer. However, I realize that would go against my argument for the 2017 class being #3 overall.

It's a damn shame that 1 and 2 ended with injury issues. Would have been cool to see those play out.

I'll also ask this: could the 2019 class be as good or better than 2007 or 2014?

Hard to tell...and a long time down the road. To do this they would have to end up being main cogs on a B1G championship team which both classes did. So that is the hope for every big class.

Then individually....Even tougher to emulate. The 2014 class had an all B1G 2nd and third team player...as well as a B1G defensive player first teamer in DM. That might be doable? Certainly not as tough as the 2007 class which had 3 All B1G first teamers eventually....and one conference player of the year. That class was just amazing. So comparing to either is a TOUGH order, 2007 might never happen again......but one day, I hope that they or some other class accomplishes.

I was bored so I put together a list of our average player recruiting rankings by class. This was based on 247 composite. I wanted to see where the projected classes lined up with actual success. I have an overall class average, and an average where the outlier recruits are taken out. Feel free to critique.

Order is by adjusted ranking.

Class - Overall Average - Adjusted Average (outliers taken out) - People Taken Out

1. 2007 - 91.78 - 98.2 - Calasan(81), Reid(77)

2. 2012 - 96.3 - 96.3 - Toyra(0)

3. 2013 - 95.62 - 95.62 - No One

4. 2015 - 91.37 - 94.4 - Weatherford (82)

5. 2008 - 62.32 - 94.08 - Hart(77)

6. 2016 - 92.82 - 92.82 - No One

7. 2018 - 92.4 - 92.4 - No One

8. 2010 - 92.31 - 92.3 - No one

9. 2009 - 61.13 - 91.69 - Bade (0)

10. 2017 - 89.62 - 89.62 - LEFT EVERYONE IN (Sasha(85) and Haarms (85) really bring down the rankings here)

11. 2006 - 85.69 - 89.5 - Vandervieran(76)

12. 2014 - 88.98 - 88.98 - LEFT EVERYONE IN (PJ (83) and Jaquil(84) Really bring down the rankings here)

13. 2011 - 87.05 - 87.05 - No One

14. 2005 - 63.61 - 63.61 - No One

Some Notes:

2007 - 3 All- Big 10 1st team and a conference POY
2012 - 2 Defensive POY and 1 1st team All-Big 10
2015 - National POY runner up, All-American, Big 10 POY.
2016 - All-American

I think it can be a top class nationally, even without Jackson-Davis.

You're inferring that Purdue didn't go further in the tourney because of injuries. That could be considered making an excuse.
Seriously? So if your goal is to win the Boston Marathon, and the week before you are in a car accident and break your leg, then you are making excuses if you don't win?

A marathon runner is part of an individual sport. Basketball is a team sport, with teammates capable of picking up the slack if one player goes down.

Out of 56 players(did not count 2018) 24 did not finish their four years and 5 were grad transfers.Hence only 27 were in the program for 4/5 years (48+%) Not a good record since we only had one player go pro early.Matt did a much better job coaching than recruiting and retention.

About standard in college basketball programs these days isn't it?

Part of being a good coach is guiding players who are not living up to their recruited potential....and guiding them to programs that fits their work ethic, or matching them to a program that fits their desire for more PT. Secondly, part of being a good coach is taking transfers or Jucos that will enhance your team, and while doing so naturally cut down on the 4/5 year player.
