Tracy got picked up by the Giants. 5th rd. 166th overall.
Sanoussi Kane picked up by the Ravens. 7th round. 250th overall.
Deeper than that.
Penix fits a need 2-3 years down the line that Cousins potentially doesn’t. Easy choice IMO
Feels like a waste of cap space. They'll have a chance to get a new QB down the road. It's also weird that they're drafting Cousins' replacement before he even played a down.
It’s not. When you have a 36 year old coming off of injury with only 2 years guaranteed on his contract, if you like the guy and he’s there…why not take him?
Jordan Love got exponentially better not playing immediately. So much so id put him above Trevor Lawrence and maybe even Justin Herbert (who were both “can’t miss” guys) with vastly LESS in game experience.
Can never have enough insurance in thr NFL and the Falcons thought they’d be fine at DE and DT with the guys on their board being still available much later.
Also, talk is the NFL informed them they were losing their first round pick next year due to the cousins tampering stuff….which makes it harder to quickly draft your replacement next year…
Don’t get the hate on Penix. The injuries are a concern but he was great when healthy and probably should have won the heisman this year IMO. Can’t hate on the strategy to set yourself up at QB for the next 4 years.
It’s a copy cat move of the packers drafting and stashing Love. I’m not a huge fan of the philosophy. It wastes salary cap space, does not help you win and they could have drafted a different QB 3 years down the road who would be just as good. Instead of drafting Love, the Packers could have drafted Higgins and actually won a second Super Bowl with Rodgers. In the salary cap era, you need your first round picks to actually start or at least. Contribute.

Wastes cap space? Your QB on a rookie deal costs the same as a DE on a rookie deal picked in the same spot.
How is that a waste of salary cap space? Loves space was $2.2M and $2.8m his first two years. Good backups are more than that usually. I’m his first year there were 40 some QBs with higher cap numbers than him. He was going to be groomed by an elite veteran QB and it’s the same for Penix. I don’t hate the strategy the only reason it is making news is they just signed cousins to a $180m contract but anyone who understands contracts including cousins knows it was effectively a 2 year $90m deal. I also wouldn’t compare to Rodgers since the narrative there was the packers were moving on from their legacy long time QB where there is no loyalty or emotional connection with cousins.
Yes it wastes cap space that could be spent on a different player! Or if you really want to draft a QB , you need to play him in his first or second year. The cap space you are wasting is in keeping the veteran QB around. Look at the Packers. They should have traded Rogers two years earlier. No QB in the NFL needs 4 years to develop.
Penix won’t sit for 4 years.
Cousins contract is effectively for 2. Unless the team is very elite, they’ll cut him and pay him his 10mil to go away and let a 3rd year Penix play.
Gotta remember they might get their first rounder taken next year too
$2m? That is barely more than the league minimum for a veteran…. And they would have still needed a backup QB.
What?! I thought you weee a packers fan?! You conveniently forget Rodgers was calling the shots including his dark room experience. Packers were at his mercy due to years of salary cap manipulation they were stuck doing what we he wanted. He bailed them out in 2022 when he signed the extension. He had so much dead cap built up they couldn’t trade him and needed him to restructure just to avoid complete devastation.
