I love the endless possibilities we have with Vince Edwards this year! I think signing Swanigan benefits Edwards in a huge way. I think Painter commented on this as well. Edwards can slide to the 3 spot and play his natural position. He can be a nightmare matchup at the 3 spot because of his versatility. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Edwards becomes our leading scorer this year just because defenses will have to focus on Hammons and Swanigan, freeing up Edwards to really fill the stat sheet. I can't wait to watch this team play this year! Let's get it done Boilers!

Yep, I think we will have unlimited weapons and it will be hard for teams to concentrate on our bigs. Edwards (and Davis) will make teams pay if they leave them unattended. I think a sophomore Edwards had a year to learn and adjust to college ball and he is ready for the next step to great things.

Call me crazy but I can easily see something like 12-5-5 from him on average. He's that good.
Edwards has the chance to be our leading scorer this year, I don't think you will see one guy averaging 18+ but 3-4 guys between 12-16 per game with any of them having the ability to drop 20 plus given the matchup.
This team should be very fun to watch, I wish we had a better draw in the ACC challenge like Louisville or even a rematch of NC state as they will be tough as well.

Most college basketball pundits will talk about Swanigan or the Hammons-Haas towers of power, but Edwards is probably the most versatile and skilled player on the team.

I really believe that Edwards can be a star player. If he gets stronger this offseason, that might help him better absorb and finish through contact around the basket on drives, pull-ups, or post-ups. If he can get a step quicker and improve his athleticism like Ray Davis did last offseason, he will be tougher to defend. If he tightens up his ball-handling and works on bringing the ball up the court and bringing it up against pressure, I can see him playing as a 1 at times next season.

He has the size and hopefully an ever-improving skillset to be a Magic Johnson-esque type of player. Some of you might think that I'm drinking too much Kool-Aid, but I just really see potential greatness with him. It doesn't hurt that he comes from a very good basketball pedigree with his father, Bill Edwards, being Wright State's all-time leading scorer and leading scorer four years in a row from 1989-1990 through 1992-1993.

If you think about it our lineup vs Wisconsin's this year are similar. Hammons, Swanigan, Edwards vs Frank, Hayes, Decker

Teams will undoubtedly try to crowd the paint against us and make us beat them from outside. That's, of course, easier said than done for 2 reasons - our inside game is tough to match-up. Hammons/Haas aside, we have a tall team. Secondly, a lot of teams just do not have adequate depth at taller positions to do this effectively, especially since we have depth at center - it's not just a 1 man show and if you get him in foul trouble, you're good. We haven't really had an effective true center since, Brad Miller? I don't really count JJ as a true center. And here we have 2 effective centers. This is what cracked me up during the complaining season we had on here (late March-mid-May).

It will be big for us to have our perimeter guys be a threat. Stephens/Mathias can be that - Davis showed he can be in flashes, but he took so few perimeter shots. Edwards one weakness last year was his 3 point range. So if Edwards can bump his 3 point shooting in the upper 30% range (last year he was around 33%), that would be huge. And Davis can still be limited, but more consistent.

With all the talk on redshirts, this is again, one of the challenges Painter will face. We really need to have 2 perimeter threats out there. It would be huge if one of those guys was a versatile guy like Edwards. I'd put Davis in there, but I think Edwards has more potential as a solid threat. And then you have one of your 3 point specialists between Stephens/Mathias. When it comes to Cline, it's one of those things where practice will really make that decision. If Stephens/Mathias are healthy and have made strides, you probably can feel ok about a redshirt on Cline. If either of them have a slight red flag, it'll be tough to throw a redshirt on Cline.

I know you've never liked Davis, but now you don't even think he should start?

Just love Edwards versatility. So glad we have this young man three more years.

Last year, one got close, but no Boiler averaged 12+ ppg, but yet this year we will have 3-4 guys with 12-16 ppg......OK, then.....

I don't care if we have 7 players with 9 ppg. We will be hard to stop. We will be dragons. Let a dragon go baseline on you and you'll get burnt:)

Now that post there sounds like you are having a nice afternoon of 12 ounce curls......enjoy!
Yep. it's the first day I can drink after the colon scope. It was brutal. Not the procedure, the "no drink" crap. rrrr! Even my wife said, " I'll be glad when you can drink again."

Now that was funny!

......and it couldn't have been done without you Gemstate.
I can relate.:) So has anybody test driven Oculto? Tequila flavored beer, 6% Alc/vol. What will they think of next? I had two. Wonder why they put a skeleton head on the bottle? And cute Skeleton Keys? Wondering minds.

Happy holidays.

First off, you know "I've never liked Davis"??? When did that occur?

Secondly, where did I say Davis shouldn't start?
In your post above, what would your starting line up be? You said we need 2 sharp shooters (you don't include Davis in that), so who are you starting?

I think it's pretty clear that we're not just playing 5 players - last year showed our starting line-up was just that - the players who started a game. Not necessarily play the most and not necessarily finish the game.

I have stated and agreed with other posts that Swanigan will probably play about 20 minutes. Leaving half of the game with a line-up similar to last year - Hammons/Haas, Edwards, Davis, Mathias/Stephens/PG. I have also stated/agreed with people saying there will probably be up to 10 minutes without a traditional point guard out there during games - and I'd lean on that being when Swanigan is in the game when you could possibly have both Mathias/Stephens in together with Davis.

I also said we need 2 players that are perimeter threats - not sharp shooters per se. I also clearly stated that Davis had improved and can be a perimeter threat. I just simply said Edwards has more potential to be a bigger threat.

That's not what you said, but that's ok. You place Davis behind Edwards, Stephens, and Mathias as perimeter threats even though he shot a higher % than them during B1G play last year and also behind Cline, who's never played college ball. Keep doubting our 3-time team captain, BTDPOY, and most valuable player. It gives him fuel (that he doesn't even need).

Why the aggressiveness?

I clearly stated he shot better in Big Ten play, but he also shot a very limited number. And I said that's a-ok. I also stated he could improve on that and become more consistent (and that includes attempting them).

I'm not sure why this has turned into a "gotcha" thread. You accused me of never liking Davis, which I literally have no idea where that came from.

[ust for fun:
Edwards, SG
Swanigan, SF
DMm PG
Hanmons, PF
Haas, C

I have said all along that all players will play multiple positions except Haas and the two PG's.

Swanigan will make everyone play harder in the off season. If Hammons improves like he has each year the last two years, I think he can play about 10 min a game at PF. If ur new PG plays well, we will do great.

I agree with this.

There are enough minutes at the 3 & 4 positions for Swanigan, Edwards, and Davis to all play a lot of minutes. All 3 are starter worthy, but one of the 3 might need to come off the bench. No big deal. I think that Edwards has a slightly higher ceiling than Davis, but but a case could be made for starting either over the other and both should average at least 25 minutes per game.
