Welcome to this week's “BOILING OVER,” GoldandBlack.com’s weekly information-clearinghouse and analysis column meant for our site members and site members only. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping us keep what is sometimes delicate or proprietary information confined to this message board. This feature allows us to be more flexible in our reporting, to our readers' benefit, and we lose that ability if we can't keep this feature secure and the value of our site's membership at its peak. Additionally, we address recruiting and hiring processes in-depth and often without filter in this feature and we do it behind a subscription-protected barrier for a reason, in hopes of avoiding situations where our reporting can impact the recruiting process, which can happen occasionally.

So again, we appreciate everyone's cooperation very much. We know there are a lot of aggregator blogs out there, and a lot of you are on Twitter and other message boards. We don’t want to come off like Darth Vader (before he turned good at the end of "Return of the Jedi" of course) here, but we would be doing all our subscribers a disservice if weren’t proactive about protecting the value of their membership.

PURDUE BASKETBALL RECRUITING

So, two guys we think that Purdue's gonna be after once they pull out of the NBA draft will be Chattanooga's Malachi Smith and Texas' Courtney Ramey, both of whom entered the transfer portal well ahead of the deadline for immediate eligibility.

Purdue's been looking for a guard to add to next year's team and has been pretty patient with the process, which will re-open after the late-May dead period ends.

Not sure Smith is really a point guard, per se, but he averaged 20 a game this season and helped Chattanooga to the NCAA Tournament; Ramey, you're familiar with after Purdue played against him in Milwaukee and recruited him for a while years ago.

Both of these guys are connected to the St. Louis area, where between Matt Painter and Paul Lusk, Purdue's staff has some modest connections that may or may not be relevant on either of these players.

Purdue's also still awaiting word from high-end transfer Tyrese Hunter from Iowa State.

Purdue's recruited Nijel Pack, Jahmir Young and Kyle Lofton before they committed elsewhere. (BN)

PURDUE FOOTBALL

DaMarcus Mitchell wasn’t drafted. But word in the Purdue football offices is the Patriots d-line coach likes Mitchell. Remember: New England came to W.L. to work him out before Purdue’s pro day. Mitchell is a physical freak who if dialed in may be able to forge a role in the pro ranks.

PURDUE FOOTBALL

Marvin Grant tweeted his commitment to Kansas on Thursday. It’s believed he didn’t have a lot of suitors. The move to KU seems curious. Grant does have a good friend on the roster in Rich Miller. Grant missed spring drills at Purdue after shoulder surgery. He also had hand surgery. There is a chance he may have issues getting on the field by August.WR Broc Thompson, LB Jalen Graham and CB Ike Reese are in Florida training at X3 in Fort Myers.

PURDUE FOOTBALL

Penn State transfer Cole Brevard adds needed depth at NT. He’s a massive 300-pound body and was supposedly one of the strongest players at Penn State. Lawrence Johnson (hip/shoulder) and D.J. Washington (back) have health issues that could crop up. If either or both are out for an extended stretch, true freshman Mo Omonode likely would have to see extended duty. Look for Damarjhe Lewis to be cross-trained at NT and 3-technique.

PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING

Purdue's still waiting on word from Texas wide receiver Marcus Washington, who we believe visited last weekend or some time around there.

Things would seem favorable for Purdue there. (staff)

PURDUE BASKETBALL RECRUITING

June will be big for Purdue for Class of 2024 visits, starting with Kanon Catchings on June 1.

Another visitor who hasn't been offered yet (to my knowlede) ...

Grand Rapids 2024 point guard Durral Brooks should be visiting also. Michigan and Michigan State and a bunch of others have already offered him. (BN)
