FIRST HALF OBSERVATIONS:
-Our best lineup includes KS and DM on the floor together. Our offense just flows so much better with them on the court. When Davis and Swanigan are in, the lane is clogged, movement is stagnant, and consequently motion offense is ineffective.
-DM and Stephens played very good defense, in fact DM had a steal and soon thereafter attempted a steal that caused an Iowa player to travel.
-VERY GOOD SPACING against the press (again this is a first half observation), which lead to their press not generating turnovers. That being said, Painter's approach to beat the zone was conservative and I think we missed lots of opportunities to punish Iowa for being so aggressive.
-KS and DM are using the shot-fake. That is huge, because it lead to Stephens scoring twice on 2-pt shots, and DM's resulted in a beautiful pass for a dunk to AJ.
-IMO the best lineup is PJ/Hill, DM, KS, VE, and AJH. It's the lineup that destroyed Iowa in the first half offensively AND defensively.
-Our post players really need to go "good hands" exercises

SECOND HALF OBSERVATIONS:
-Starting lineup was the same as our normal starting lineup, which did pretty well offensively (Haas especially), but struggled defensively. Swanigan could not guard Clemmons and he nailed several 3-pointers.
-Rapheal really struggled offensively, missing a bunny as well as getting stripped on a breakaway.
-Painter subs in Hammons and Mathias for Haas and VE
-After the sub, Swanigan and Rapheal each have bad entry passes for turnovers
-Rapheal gets burned by Uthoff again, and tiny Gesell scores over Swanigan right at the basket (seriously...that was really bad defense)
-Next offensive possession, PJ takes an NBA 3, then the following possession Swanigan dribbles into 3 guys and turns the ball over (leads to a transition 3 by Clemmons, his 3rd, who is Swanigan's guy)
-Painter subs, lineup is Hill, DM, KS, VE, AJH. They play good defense, but struggle at rebounding and give Iowa a ton of offensive rebounds. Culminated in a Woodbury turnover due to Hammon's defense.
-Hill and Mathias break the press easily and Vince feeds AJ hammons for 2. Hill is extremely effective against the press.
-Mathias and KS settled for 3s too often, and missed them all.
-Painter subs in PJ, RD, and Cline (Hammons and DM stay in). PJ and Mathias beat the press but a bad pass from PJ is picked off, 2 points for Iowa. Next possession PJ is hounded and calls a timeout (did he really?). After the timeout, Davis airballs a 3 (46-43 Purdue). Purdue plays good defense, forces shot clock violation. Mathias feeds Hammons, he misses his shot. Swanigan comes in and draws 2 fouls.
-Iowa lights it up from 3-point range. They hit 6 of 9 in the second half.

Surprisingly, Iowa's press did NOT force very many turnovers directly, only a couple. A lot of the turnovers were in the half court due to sloppy passing or out of control drives. Our defense was very bad in the second half and, IMHO, more the issue for our loss than the press. Hammons couldn't guard Uhl, Swanigan couldn't guard anyone (Clemmons and Baer both drilled open 3s), and nobody could guard Uthoff. I also think that Painter panicked when our offense wasn't scoring and just started subbing everyone trying to find an answer. Not really sure whether that was the right or wrong thing to do, just an observation. Personally, I think we needed to see more Hill, VE, and KS and less PJ, Swanigan, and RD. Discuss...
