A story about an SR-71

ONE of the fastest? At 2,193.2 mph, I'd say it is the unquesitoned fastest.

Depends...if you think the x planes count, it's not.

I would counter with 'planes that made it into any decent level of production'.

Wasn't a challenge, just seeing what your definition was. I don't really count the scram jet or rocket powered X planes, either. The SR-71 is the king of speed, in my mind. It's an incredibly great looking plane, too.

Years ago I saw an old friend and fraternity brother at Homecoming at Purdue. He was ROTC while we were in school, but I had lost track of him. He said he was living in California and I asked him if he had flown back or drove. Without hesitation he informed me that him and his buddy had flown back...in an F/A-18. Turned out he was a test pilot in the Navy and he and his copilot had "borrowed" a plane for a "training" flight (and to use up their fuel allotment by the end of the year).

Not quite an SR-71 Blackbird, but still rather impressive.
