WUG Game vs CZE... stats, etc

no promises here, but
Purdue Basketball‏Verified account@BoilerBall 11h11 hours ago
We were also told that the ARG was not on TV as was planned. The CZE game WILL be tape-delayed at 1 PM ET on Aug. 24. Sorry for miscomm.
I am just so confused why these can't be put on ESPNU at the time they are running? Hell, even CBS Sports...it isn't like the games are being played live at prime time and interrupts other programming. You'd think they'd get more eyes than some fishing show/rerun of an old basketball game at 3:00 or 5:30am

Purdue men's basketball, Maryland women's basketball, and Iowa baseball are all there representing the USA. This type of niche, B1G focused sporting event seems to be exactly what BTN/Fox should be airing. Arrange to get live video feeds & just have the on-air talent call the games from the Chicago studios like what they did for some games when BTN was in its infancy.

From the games I've seen, Haas seems to be concentrating and improving on what he does best . He's a low post scoring machine. I cringed when Swanigan would shoot those threes from outside. Yes, they went in, But I still cringed. With as many outside shooters as we have, let them do their thing and let Haas do his. He's unstoppable in the paint.

there is no reason for Haas to shoot anything outside of 10 ft wide open...and it would take a special game for that to happen

Haas has been very quick with the ball under the basket last five games. His footwork must have been good to make those moves work.Perhaps due to lack of competition, or, he became just that good. We will see soon enough.

I like it.

Boiler Up!!

Haas only played 20 minutes. He had zero fouls, which indicates to me that he needs to get more aggressive and get more rebounds. No one in college can stop him, but we knew that going in.

Then again, he had two blocks (the stats usually don't count when he gets a finger on the ball, which it should) and maybe he spent most of his time intimidating shooters than setting himself to sweep the boards.

Ok, I'll state the obvious. Swanigan, V Edwards and Haas all went to the NBA combine and had different coaches provide evaluations of their skills, talents, and also deficiencies. We saw the results last year of Swanigan going to the combine and then working 24/7 to improve his skills and deficiencies they pointed out. I think we are seeing the same thing this year from Haas and V Edwards. They have both arrived ready to play.

While some may worry about our players going to those NBA combines and turning pro early, I believe we can see and are benefiting from that experience.

The biggest contribution that doesn't really show up in basic stats, is that Purdue was for the most part keeping second chance points to a minimum. When Haas didn't get a block or rebound, he was boxing out.

Just curious, since we are representing USA, has USA provided any additional coaches or trainers or anything? or did they just delegate everything to Purdue? I have to believe USA is covering the costs.

I'm also wondering how Taipei was able to secure the games. Obviously, there was a bidding process. But, obviously, this is a huge feather in their hat.

Probably trying to use this as a jumping point to grab bigger games in the future or possibly a World Cup. Showing you can hold smaller games (yet still large) is a good starting point in your bidding process.

Personally, I think the OAC should just purchase or rent out an island off the coast of Greece and build a permanent site for the Olympics. It would take out the issues of bidding and corruption along with leaving places like what we have seen in Brazil and Russia (game sites abandoned). Athletes from portions of the world that are attempting to compete that have an inherent disadvantage would have a permanent place to train. Easy fix but would require the OAC giving up their lavish lifestyle and being treated like royalty every 2 years or so.

The olympics and Greece? Now who'd a thunk that?

now we know the rest of the story, and why he goes by PJ.

It began in a small gym in Jackson, Mississippi....then moved to the Basketball crazy State of Indiana.

A lot of people don’t know, my real name is LaSalle. You know, I’m LaSalle Thompson IV. My dad is obviously LaSalle. My dad was younger, they nicknamed him ‘pee wee.’ So that’s how you get ‘P.J’ from ‘pee wee junior.’ He’s like 5’10”, small guy. So they nicknamed him ‘pee wee,’ that’s how you get ‘P.J.'”

And NOW we know.....the REST of the story......

And speaking of P.J.s, why not try a pair of the most comfortable pajamas made in these United States, the Pilgrim brand sold exclusively at Sears Roebuck. Visit your local Sears retailer or order from the Sears catalog.

Freshman yeAr I cringed at biggie threes. Last year I wanted him to shoot it. He made good choices most of the time and shot a darn good percentage. He had the skills.
Isaac has skills too they are just inside. I will cringe if he shoots a three.

my cringes came, not for biggie, he made 40% of those shots. But he missed 60% of the time. and for some reason biggie and Haas were not usually on the court at the same time. And when Biggie missed, Purdue very seldom had a guy in place to get the rebound, so it frequently became a 1 shot possession. I'm fine with a big man shooting threes if we also have a big man on the court who can rebound .

another good post.
When biggie declared several persons went over the edge of the earth screaming how bad we would be because it's impossible to replace that rebounding. BS! You do it as a team. As long as the team rebounding numbers don't tank we will be just fine. Haas won't get 12 per game but he will get a damn good block out 40 times a game and grab six for himself. The guards and forwards will grab the rest.
Go back and watch the baby boilers, specifically Etwaun. That is a fantastic rebounder from the two guard position.

Aha. You wanted a big underneath for offensive rebound opportunities. Haas and biggie were only on the floor together for short periods in my opinion because 1) they backed each other up, and b) they had a hard time finding someone for the second big to guard effectively against most teams. I think we now have options for that problem.

At 40% I can live with a lower defensive rebounding percentage, but I would also think that Purdue would have gotten a decent percentage of rebounds on Swanigan missed threes. After all, you would think that Swanigan would be drawing out the opposing center which would open up more opportunities for smaller players. Vince Edwards, in particular, had a very solid offensive rebounding percentage at 8.4% and I would expect that percentage to be higher when the opposing center is drawn away from the basket, particularly on long missed threes.

another good post..

If Taylor was healthy last year, Haas and Biggie would have played a lot more together. Matt was worried about both being in foul trouble. We panicked playing Michigan, because their two big men shot less than 35% from 3 pt line??? Haas did a great job last year sealing off their center and Biggie et al could swoop in for the rebound.

This year, we need Haas to swoop in for the rebounds. He has the strength and has convinced me he has the quick feet. The thing that he did not have last year was aggression. Once Smotherman left, he sat every time he got slightly in foul trouble. This year, we have capable back up, so Haas can play longer and more aggressively. From the highlights it looks like he has it this year. There is only one way Haas does not get 12 rebounds a game. If Matt does not play him 30 minutes a game.

The added benefit that some poster mentioned is that with Haas and Taylor controlling the D boards, the Edwards can fly down the court with the outlet pass leading to more fast break points.
