Wreck of WWII aircraft carrier USS Hornet discovered in the South Pacific

Some of the photos I’ve seen are epic. My grandfather served on her sister ship Enterprise for several years in the Pacific campaign. Reading about WWII naval history fascinates me.

Agreed.
It is amazing that we today we take it for granted that we have the opportunity to actually see the bottom of the 3 mile deep ocean with its artifacts and the surface of Mars during the same short daily news cycle.
I told my grandkids recently that today's technology produces so many things that were entertainment fantasy when I was a child, ala Dick Tracy comics or the Flash Gordon movies with Buster Crabbe from the 30's that were a television staple in the 50's.

Yeah the Enterprise was in a lot of major campaigns. It was severely damaged in this same battle that sunk the Hornet. Fortunately it lived to fight another day(s). I had an uncle that served on one of the light escort carriers. He said they were nearly destroyed at the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

If you haven’t, read Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors. One of my favorite books ever.

Had older relatives that were at Guadalcanal, talked of battles at Smith Field.

I remember hearing stories of Midway, Pearl Harbor, the Phillipines, and in turn reading up on them.

The Battle of Santa Cruz I am not as familiar with, just a name really, but will be researching it a bit due to this article.

gr8, I haven't had a chance to check out the book yet, but I came across this You Tube video of the Fletcher class destroyers. I thought you might appreciate it.
