Wow, I am 100% on the Matt Haarms bandwagon

Like him as well, but needs to add another 15-20 lbs before he’s a difference maker

I think he's great where he is. He's got great quickness and a totally different skill set than Haas. He showed tonight he can still protect the rim and play defense. Great get by Painter/staff and even better that they gave him a year to develop. Dividends are paying off now.

He is 7'3 and is dribbling on the perimeter. Someone can pull the stats but he looks bigger than JJ ever was. Good lord he is going to be a CBB monster.

I don't expect him to be banged up past tonight. I think he just got an elbow in the side.

JJ started to show his potential very late in his freshman year if I remember correctly. I knew he would be a great player for us but he had a slow start. JohnnyDoeBoiler's post is spot on about the red shirt year helping Haarms.

I kind of agree with you. Back in the 80s Pacer coaches kept pushing Smits to bulk up. It didn’t work. Slowed him down so Larry Brown had him back down to his original weight and the rest was a long good career.

But JJ couldn't shoot until maybe his junior or senior year. And he wasn't that good as a freshman. Being a 6'10" 190lb 18 year old is hard in the B1G.
Speaking of JJ, I saw a recent highlight clip on him. It appears he is playing very well overseas and has turned into somewhat of a monster. He was hitting 3's driving with dunks and his mid range game still looked outstanding. It would be nice if he could get one more shot at the NBA.

Yep, saw a few of those too. He might have a chance in the NBA.

IIRC, Smits was 7-3, 250 pounds when he was an NBA All Star and led the Pacers to the NBA Finals.

Haarms may need to get stronger, but not necessarily heavier.
