Would be nice if our coach was representing us at state finals. Is he there??

Two big-time sophs in 4A game in Phinisee and Langford. Tom Crean is front row. Matt Painter is ???? Even Holtmann (Butler) got a mention. Crean shown a few times. Hopefully he is there, just not getting media love.

If you've ever seen Crean at a recruit's game, you know that he makes sure to be seen. He loves the attention and leaves no doubt that people know he is there. On the other hand, you are more likely to have to search for Painter when he's in attendance. His is a quiet presence.

I agree with boilerpt...have seen the exact same thing....Crean sits down low at midcourt and eats popcorn....Painter usually up high and on the corners.

Kind of like at our games.... I couldn't resist. You lobbed me that one.

Is this in reference to the photo going around Facebook? It really deserves a caption this thread.

Yes (you figured me out!)

That got called out on twitter as they stayed like that for over 15 minutes. A few media pundits pointed out that it went from 'thoughtful' to creepy as Creany was very cognizant of the cameras.

Painter was shown on Fox Sports before Crean. Where were you?

I did not see Painter at the game. I saw Crean watching from courtside under a basket during the 3A game and of course during the 4A they put a close up of his silly mug on the jumbo trons and he was just grinning as about half the crowd cheered. A very cheesy moment for sure. I can only hope Painter was there also. If he was, he sure didn't get the favor of the live on screen attention they gave Crean.

I watched on and off, listened to first half on radio who said Crean was there watching, no mention of MP. Then I checked Twitter to see all these Tweets of Crean posing for pictures with fan. When I did watch 3rd-4th quarter I did not see the cutaway to MP. Just saw another Crean shot, I think with his son.

The jumbotron at Bankers Life showed three coaches in succession. Painter first, mild smattering of applause from the general direction of the McCutcheon crowd. Crean next, probably three times as loud with booing from the Purdue fans as the cheering quieted. Holtzman from Butler next...absolute silence from the crowd. Nobody recognized him.

Calipari wasn't shown at the Fieldhouse, although I heard the TV broadcast did show him. I suspect the boos would have been deafening had they shown him.

The university allowed that to be released on the web? He understands how shallow the public is and how important images are. But it still adds to his reputation for creepy behavior.

Giving a hug to one of his players in the immediate aftermath of their season ending is creepy? You think Keady never gave a player a hug when they were upset?

Holy god, what's this, an arm around TWO players? What's he, some kind of pervert?

Interesting...you are seen down low at midcourt, but everyone know to "watch a game" you need some elevation to understand spacing and see the flow better. Nobody was scouting the game, but all scouts head up to the high ground...

Please. He was there to see Langford and, more importantly, for Langford to see him. And if you don't understand that, you don't understand recruiting. They can watch a thousand game films of these guys for "scouting" purposes. Doesn't make any sense to quietly slip in, observe in anonymity from 30 rows back and then slip quietly back out and have the kid get told you're there three days later.

4 posts in 12 years, thanks for your contribution "coach". Give Crean a kiss for us.

How is that creepy? A coach comforting an 18 year old kid? That's only creepy in your mind. Actually, the media was asked to leave once people realized they were photographing this. Only in your guys' eyes could this be a bad image.

It's just creepy. I don't know how else to explain it. Another way might be self-indulgent. Crean knows where every camera is. These showings of awkwardness are not for the players he's "comforting." These moments are advantageous photo ops to recruit the next kid or the next kid's mom who is looking for a male to help nurture their son.

you obviously did, but didn't get it. We both agree that Crean wanted the spotlight. I'm sure you agree that both players know Matt was there as well...probably met with both for a few if they felt like it. I don't think Matt is interested is seeing thousands of AAU or high school students taping games against other high school teams. It probably was not only important that the players knew Matt was there (Oh if only we could return to when players wanted to be an important player on a team rather than the team as so many do across this country), but ALSO that Matt actually see how they do under the most pressure they have faced in their basketball up to this time.

You apparently think it is better for Crean to find the cameras and you may be right, but I think the sentiment is THAT is who Crean is right or wrong.

If Matt "met with both for a few" that would be an interesting NCAA violation.

I don't think Crean gave a rat's ass where the camera was. I think he made sure he sat where Langford could see him. Just as Butler's coach and Michael Lewis did. Congrats to the camera crews for recognizing that there was a D1 coach sitting courtside.
