With Our 7th & 8th Commit

Purdue moved to #59 in one ranking, 1 place ahead of Alabama. Yes I Know the Tide will ultimately pass us but things are definitely looking Boiler Up!
No offense intended GOFJ, but did you read this?

"The 6-foot-6, 260-some-pounder from Mason High School in Ohio, near Cincinnati, chose Purdue over several MAC and Ivy League opportunities, as well as interest from Maryland and Rutgers, among others."

You're a hater.

Has yet to be evaluated by rivals yet. I'm sure when he gets a 3 star, you'll come back and say you were wrong....(strong sarcasm)

Did you watch the draft? WKU had enough first round picks to keep them in the top 10 - the only non-P5 on the list - after the first round. Several of those picks were linemen. I trust this staff's ability to identify OL talent. Let's see where he ranks when all is said and done.

He plays BB also so he is a two sport athlete...bet he is closer to 280 by the time he is done in HS especially if he forgoes playing BB if he signs in the early period.

Again, who cares? You act like Brohm was pulling in guys with amazing offers at WKU. He wasn't and he still won a ton of games and got guys drafted. But keep acting like that if you want. Will be funny to bump threads like this when we keep landing solid players down the road.

What few on here understand is that back when The Boring was promoting the leather helmet look he was actually testing leather helmets himself and suffers from the residuals of that activity.

I understand what Boris is saying. I'll throw this out there. Last year Brohm flipped a bunch of athletes who were already committed to other schools. And for a lot of those flips, Purdue was their only power 5 offer. If I was player with a WKU offer or Appalachian St offer, or middle tenn st offer, or Florida a&i offer, or a USf offer Or Georgia southern offer, and all of a sudden in December, two days before signing, Purdue came in and made me an offer, I'd flip, turn down my verbal and sign with Purdue. It would be a no brainer. If I had offers from Eastern and Western Kentucky, and Purdue came along, I'd jump on the Purdue bandwagon. It was easy to understand how Brohm was able to flip many of his last commitments last year. If you were Beach, and Purdue offered, wouldn't you choose Purdue?

Similarly, if I verbaled to Purdue, and OSU, ND, Mich, MSU, IU, Neb, UW, and Iowa offered me a scholarship I'd jump ship and sign with them. And yes, that actually happened to a lot of Purdue verbals and players Purdue offered in the past 5 years.

The question is not the quality of the recruit or his other offers. The question is the timing. I believe the majority of these recruits would gladly decommit and sign with Purdue if we offered in December. So why not wait until then to offer some of these players? It's kind of like fantasy baseball. Having Castro and Gregorious are nice players and would start for most fantasy teams, But if they are your choice, you look around and pick other players first, and then pick these two players in the middle rounds, not in the first 2 rounds. And some of these recent commitments look more like middle round picks that would still be available and would pick Purdue over their other offers at a later time.

Yes, it's important to have early commitments and build a foundation. But, I'd rather start and build that foundation like Minn is doing. Many of their early commitments are players with Mich and MSU and UW offers. Their early commitments are serving as a recruiting tool to attract others.

I have nothing against Brohm's early commitments, but many look like players he could flip later. I'd like to see the first recruits be ones that are bold and say I chose Purdue over OSU because I believe in Brohm and want to make Purdue great. Frankly, I see more fans posting their blind faith in Brohm than players.

And I understand many quality players are currently taking a wait and see approach. I also understand with some players, you need to get them committed before their ranking climbs and they generate interest from the big boys. I knew last year once our elite db commit received an offer from MSU, his verbal to us was gone. And once that 4* RB from Indy received an offer from mich, his interest in Purdue was gone. I understand the reality of Purdue recruiting. However, I'd like to see some recruits choosing Purdue over offers from the BIG football programs rather than MAC and Ivy League schools.

Many people say it takes time and be patient. And then I look at what minn has done this year. I expect to be out recruited by the BIG boys. But now, minn, Maryland and Northwestern are all now BIG boys?

There is a top 50 5* basketball player who gave his commitment to play for WKU. Why? I have no idea. Many other power basketball teams have come and made him offers. But he remains committed to WKU. While teams like U.K., Duke etc may want him, he made the bold move, and said, yes I can get better offers, but WKU is my choice. I'd like to see something like that happen to Purdue football. I'd like to see a Blind Side story about some elite athlete wanting to play for Purdue. Cronk was close to being that story, but Hazell was stupid. Jones was that story. Sindelar was that story. George was that story. We need more books like that on our recruiting shelf.

I'm a skeptical and critical person. I was trained and brainwashed by the military to look for all possible faults in everything, except Heinz ketchup. Even if Purdue goes 9-3, I know I will still be critical, and look for areas of improvement. I don't acept anything at face value, and I do a lot of comparison shopping. I own a car sold by Bob Rohrman. I bought it used, because it was a great car and a great deal, not because it was originally sold by Bob Rooooooooorman ! I'm not going to change. If you want a critical post that is long winded, read my posts. If you like positive one liners, ignore me.

As for Boris, I can see where he's coming from. I really like he QB and the first ol that signed. And hope the other six pan out or that Brohm sees something in them that I didn't and many other power 5 coaches also didn't. And I realize a lot of recruiting is about opportunity. Maybe if other power 5 coaches had seen these players compete, they'd be offering scholarships too.

I'll end this post on a positive note. I've posted for the last 5 years that Purdue needs to get commitments from players immediately following our Summer football camps. I don't know if these were the best players who attended our camp. But they all attended our camp and made an impression, and Brohm received a commitment within a week of attendance. And that's how the process is supposed to work. These players want to play for Brohm at Purdue. And that's a good start.

And this comes from a Carterville guy.

OMG!!......How are we ever going to rectify things with our losing programof eight losing seasons over the past ten years if don't get some recruits from TX or FL...........????
Lets trust JB`s player evaluations where ever they may take him and his staff.

Was Cronk ever an "elite athlete?" His ranking and offers sure didn't show it. He was upgraded to being a low three star recruit, and his offer list is not unlike the same ones that people are complaining about here.

It's June. We have 7+ months for these guys to pick up additional offers and end the process holding an impressive list of suitors. Brohm and co. are well aware of the shortage of talent on the roster. I highly doubt they are just filling roster spots with anyone willing to sign up at this point.

.

Problem with Cronk is Shoop pleaded with Hazell to offer him and he refused. Kid wanted to play at purdue.

Was it because Hazell didn't think we needed more OL?

We had two committed OTs at the time.

If anything, take more than you need on both lines. The realities of the position and hit rate on prospects guarantees you wont ever have too many.

Recruiting is all about getting on them early and showing them love. You look at a guy without a power 5 offer but you think he can be a contributor then you offer him. If you're a school like Purdue, and you take a wait and see approach, and then a team like Iowa jumps in and offers first, the recruit might not even give you a sniff after the fact. That was a big problem with Hazell. He offered players like it was something special to get an opportunity to be part of a 1 or 2 win season. We are in no position to be not the first offer for a player we feel can play.

According to the book Meat Market offensive tackles has the highest miss rate according to coaches. Would think it would be QB and CB but they discuss it at length

Makes sense. These guys come in big but are expected to get even bigger, and not every player is going to be able to perform at the same level with the additional weight.
