Ouch! So no way to fill the gap (figuratively and literally)?Scholarships aren’t the issue. We don’t have room under the 25 signee cap
Grad transfer. Could do it, but my guess is defense gets addressedI thought we only had 23 signed. We hopefully we will sign Bell, which is 24. Wouldn't we have 1 open scholarship with Triplett and Wahlberg counting toward next year's class?
Pretty sure It will be a smaller class next yearby doing so, wouldn't this action reduce next year's class? aren't we doing that already with Triplett and Wahlberg?
My numbers put the class at a max of 18. My guess would be it would look something like this:Pretty sure It will be a smaller class next year
With a small class projection, this would be the year I would not take a quarterback. Purdue has a logjam there and other positions are in more need.My numbers put the class at a max of 18. My guess would be it would look something like this:
QB: 1
RB: 1
WR: 1-2 depending on who you can get
TE: 0
OL: 3-5
DL: 2-4
LB: 2-3
DB: 2
K: 1
Understand your POV but you always take a QB. Especially if Sindelar doesn’t get his 6th year, you’d have three guys (Plummer, Piferi, TBD) that Brohm picked himself. Not discounting Sipe but have to think at this point in time he may be passed up.With a small class projection, this would be the year I would not take a quarterback. I think the recruiting next year for QB will be determined in the spring and the follow up to Sindelar will have a lot of spring 2019 weighted on it.
No. After 2010, you can never have too manyIf Sindelar gets granted a sixth year, does that change your thinking?
With a small class coming in 2019 and red shirts on every QB that we have on the roster at this point, I don`t see how we could take another QB when our D-line is thin, inexperienced and hemorrhages yardage and points....JMHOWith a small class projection, this would be the year I would not take a quarterback. I have always thought it wise to take a QB ea recruiting cycle (especially after 2010),but after studying the roster, I think we could get by in 2020, without. But...only if Sindelar is granted a 6th year and provided there are no transfers. We have luxury (4) highly regarded scholarship guys and emergency QB's in Sparks, Graham or C Allen, the last 2 of which were all-state in their respective states as qbs. In addition, I would assume O'Connell who was invited to walkon at Minny (would've likely played this fall) or walkon Carollo (D1 offers)) could play in a pinch .Not sure what happened to Cam Northern or if he left team?
Its a calculated risk but I noted OSU and NEB chose to forego any QB;s this class, so schools accept the risk, I suppose?
It was about three months ago that some were of the opinion that a QB was likely to transfer out because of what was looking like a log jam at that position at the time.....I have always thought it wise to take a QB ea recruiting cycle (especially after 2010),but after studying the roster, I think we could get by in 2020, without. Totally agree, can’t blame the young man for wanting to start the next chapter in his life.Reading the article, he graduated from Purdue this December- basically in 3 1/2 years. he has his entire life ahead of him. he used his athletic talents to pay for his education. he realized he wouldn't be a pro football player, and is thankful for his time at Purdue. for most of us, that's a huge success story. I wish him well.
I feel alot of times when a guy like him who was projected to start mysteriously quits, it's usually because of physical problems or fear of injuries in the future. No idea if that was the case with him tho. I read why he quit but feel it may be more then what was said.Sounds like he just don’t want to play football anymore. I have to respect a guy who makes a decision like that.
That's my guess. But they didn't say that as being the reason so maybe it wasn't.concussions?
Correct. I was going to post the same thing. Brohm has said quality depth at QB is so crucial to his offense (or something along those lines) that he wants a QB in every class. It protects us from an unexpected transfer and/or injury forcing us into playing someone who's not ready. We've just been so accustomed over the past 5-6 years of forcing true freshman into game situations versus redshirting them and developing them into stronger upper-classmen. I'm very confident if there's a QB he really wants, he's going after him. I also think we are banking a lot on Sindelar getting a 6th year and we will have to be deep into recruiting someone before we will know that status anyway.I think Brohm has said that he wants to take a QB every recruiting year. I don't think 2020 would be any different. I don't see that strategy as affecting other positions. We aren't likely to take as many WRs or DLs as we did this year, so that can shift to OL.
Can’t be replaced until fall campI’m not as convinced as everyone else seems to be that the 2020 recruiting class is going to be a small one. Haven’t we already lost a couple players who cannot be replaced right away due to the 25 man hard cap on the 2019 class? Mendez’s scholly, for example, cannot be filled until 2020. At least that is my understanding. There will probably be a few more attrits next year.
Is that restricted to transfers then? I was under the impression that after Bell we only have one more 2019 scholarship to give. Can’t be replaced until fall camp
It isn’t scholarships, it’s room under the 25 signees capIs that restricted to transfers then? I was under the impression that after Bell we only have one more 2019 scholarship to give.
And that changes in the fall for 2019 or are you talking 2020 scholarships? It isn’t scholarships, it’s room under the 25 signees cap
Once camp starts, anyone who signs scholarship papers counts toward the next class. And that changes in the fall for 2019 or are you talking 2020 scholarships?

Ok gotcha. I think we’re saying approximately the same thing. The Franklin and Mendez vacancies will be filled by players who count toward the 2020 cap.Once camp starts, anyone who signs scholarship papers counts toward the next class.

Right. For 2019. As of now it appears the 2020 class will hit the 85 total before the 25, but I’m saying the eventual 2020 class size will be closer to 25 than most are saying (see 18 above). With a class of 22 or 23 this discussion is probably moot IMO. You take a QB.Probably. By my count we have more schollies open than that. The hard cap on the number of signees is what is limiting us, not the number of open a scholarships
