I have looked at the elites that play in McDonalds game. Although there are many that go on to the next level(NBA), several are complete misses in college. If Purdue is going to make to an Elite 8 or Final 4, I would say that we're more apt to follow the Wisconsin model vs. the MSU model, where we get a group of kids that can get to that next level by not how many stars they earned on a Rivals site, but how hard they are willing to work on the court.
Swanigan would not have been a good fit(not only because he didn't want to come here). But, I think he believes that MSU gives him the best shot to make it to the next level. The problem is that HE has to make it to that next level. I'm not sure he's mature enough to understand that. Izzo can talk about family. However, there is a history of covering up for player's misbehavior in the past. I don't think that this will be good for this new recruit. Dawson clearly had some anger issues there due to frustration. I think the same thing could happen here with Caleb.
You don't hear about those kind of problems at Wisconsin. For everyone that bashes Painter, I think I see a lot of similarities in style of Keady and Ryan than I do Izzo. That's a good thing. Because, I don't see the coddling going on with those 2 coaches as you do with Izzo. Clearly, Izzo is a hall of fame coach. But, he's had his fair share of baggage that's come with it.
At the end of the day, I'm comfortable with Painter and his recruiting. 5-star athletes don't win championships. Experience and hard work still go a long way in this sport. Play good defense and don't turn the ball over will take you far with a little bit of good shooting and passing. To be honest, the officiating in basketball generally sucks. That's why I don't trust those star ratings. Because, officiating can dictate the game's outcome and some of the stats that go with it.
I like our squad and can't wait for next season. We've got players who play the game the right way. The next 3 or 4 years are gonna be fun especially if our guys do the 3 things: 1)good defense 2) don't turn the ball over 3)shoot and pass the ball effectively. It's a simple game.
