Will Maui be cancelled?

I'm guessing there's an arena or two available somewhere in the world. Hopefully everything will work out for these very important basketball games. Oh and also for, you know, the people losing their homes, businesses, and in some cases friends and family members

This a PU basketball board. The question was asked about a basketball tournament. There are plenty of other places that you can go if you want to talk about the more serious impacts of the fires. There was no disrespect in the post or the follow up comments. Of course, we all know that the lives and homes and businesses are more important than a basketball tournament. You wouldn't think that would have to be said, but I guess in today's world of "I'm so offended" you have to preface everything you say. Carry on...

The tourney is going to have to be moved and there are a lot of people who plan to attend who may need to know what will happen. There is no disrespect for the people suffering in my post, none at all.

I guess some people just seek out reasons to be offended.

They’re still looking for bodies, I’m sure a hoops tourney 3 months from now isn’t the first thing on their mind. Give it some time, your question will be answered, my guess is it will be moved.

It will likely be moved, let’s be honest, they’re looking for bodies, guessing a hoops tourney slated for November isn’t being thought about at this minute. It will be addressed soon I would think.

Nah you f'd up because you wanted to rush to be the first to post "Purdue basketball info"

You probably know it too

Sad what happened and Lahaina is 100% gone. It is going to take a long time for Maui to recover sadly.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it move to Vegas. I am sure they are looking at options as we speak. Probably see them leverage the coverage as a fundraiser for the island.

The Gonzaga board has a thread that is exactly like this one. I think it's fair to speculate and wonder about how the tournament will be played while still understanding the main point of this is the personal tragedy itself. That's all we're doing here. Let's not blow anything out of proportion.

I really dont know, but is all of Maui destroyed, I have only been to Ohaiu, I realie Maui is much less populated. Is Lahaina the only place in Maui that can hold it? Can the move the tourney somewhere else in Hawaii. I get Vegas, but Hawai could use the positive economic impact at this moment. Just curious, would love to see it moved somewhere else.

I lean left, but I am so over the fake offended people. I agree, get over yourselves. Yes the personal tragedy is the worst, if you so offended get off your ass and do something about the tragedy, but a few seconds on a message board texting we cant discuss the tourney and how offended you are is crocodile tears for sure.

Doubt it's getting moved...gym is fine and the area around lahaina was untouched, where all the hotels are....they recently stated to avoid west Maui, where the tournament is, until October 15th....the areas around lahaina will need tourism help in the worst way by then....they aren't moving it....

Don't know what capacity is but they were looking for 2,000 hotel and condo rooms for residents at one point.

I'm not familiar enough with the island to comment on specifics, but I have read several articles where local businesses are begging tourists to come. Their issue is not all of the island is impacted and the parts that aren't need the tourists or they will be going out of business also. No idea what hotels/restaurants are like around or near the arena. But here is one of the articles:

It is a small island and a main tourist area doesn’t exist any more. Outside of normal logistics there is the perception that your doing a tournament in an area that had a major disaster.

I’m assuming there is a point they have to make a go/no go decision. Lot of folks need to alter travel plans etc.

They would've made an announcement by now if they were moving it....it takes a lot of planning to do something that major....

Possibly, but not sure the tournament is as high of a high priority to the those intimately affected as it is to the fans sitting here waiting on basketball season.
True but don't you think if it were moving they would at least announce something so that people who made plans to go could cancel and go somewhere else?....they're not moving it that's why....Maui needs business and they've already announced that the west side of Maui will be open by then....most of the resorts were untouched in that area and they need to survive economically....the gym was untouched too....they need help and moving it elsewhere is not helpful in anyway....

Maybe you're so indoctrinated in your political tribe and desensitized with the 24 hr news cycle that you can't separate actual human tragedy from political talking points. The fires were still burning when this thread started.

Perhaps the anonymity of a message board makes this discussion palatable in the midst of pulling bodies of children out of the ashes and allows you to skip the social moratorium reserved for the real world.

I don't expect people to relate to Maui on the same level, but I will not concede that the timing of OPs post was despicable.

And i am sure you are one of those mad at Oprah who recently has been buying up 2k acres of land in Maui but none of her land got burned so clearly its a conspiracy.

This is exactly what I mean. It sucks, its horrible, many died, for the 1000 time in a row the response by FEMA was slow, financially too little and underwhelming. You can have that discussion too, this one is a seperate discussion,
