I know...this sounds ludicrous. But with the move to 20 games next year and Matt only being 47 years old, I think it's possible. Consider:

Matt Painter has a career .599 Big Ten winning percentage. That equates to a 12-8 average during a 20 game season. Frankly, I think he'll probably average closer to 13 the rest of his career but I'll stick with 12 to be conservative.

He currently has 127 Big Ten wins. Knight has 353. To reach 353 at the 12 win pace, he'd have to coach at Purdue just 19 more seasons. He'd be only 66.

A few comments on this:
  • By that point, Knight might not even hold the record. Izzo needs 98 wins to break the record which would likely require him to coach another 8 seasons. Does he want to coach until he's 70?
  • No, that wouldn't put Matt Painter on Knight's level unless he also wins multiple national championships so to those who will obviously make that argument, I just made it for you.
  • I'm pretty sure this post is blowing the minds of a few posters that I'm certain I don't need to name
  • With just 3 more solid seasons, Painter will crack the top 10 all time Big Ten coaching wins. Not bad for a "mediocre" coach.

"just" 19 more seasons... haha.

No, I was thinking about this subject the other day - I was looking at how many more seasons Izzo needs to break the record. And also I looked at how many more seasons Painter needs to top Keady's wins.

I think 12-8 is very conservative. But it's hard to project 19 seasons in the future. If anybody could coach a long time, I think it's Painter. I think you could say this about a lot of coaches, but it applies to him more than most - his life is basketball.

My freshman year at Purdue was Keady's last year. If Painter coaches 19 more years, his last year will be my daughter's sophomore year at Purdue.

I'm feeling old, my senior year was Keady's first.
