I have read the different articles on this site and heard the Gold and Black Radio discussions, but there has not been much on stats on these practices and detail on these practices. Of course, there is Appleby and Blough alternating first and second teams.

Has anyone seen any of the actual practices? It seems like Appleby will be the starter for our first game, if they stay pretty even to the end of this week, which is when Hazell had mentioned that he would like to name the starter for the Marshall game. I have not read anything that is mentioning Blough separating himself much from Appleby.

Sounds like it would be pretty shocking if Appleby doesn't start week1. Wouldn't be surprised if they name him the starter at the conclusion of camp. I think Saturday is going to be a big evaluation for both, during the jersey scrimmage

Agree... would be flat out shocked if Appleby doesn't start the first game (barring injury, etc.).

Since I played on the offense, that's where my emphasis is when I go to practice.

Been to several practices. Austin and David take turns with the 1's. Elijah is always with the 3's. All three are pretty good at hitting stationary targets (ES is the best), and very good when the receiving corps steps in, but when the action gets heavy (D linemen baring down on you) it gets a lot more difficult (duh!). Austin, being taller, sees his targets better, but has had difficulty delivering the deep threats. He's a strong runner.

David is pretty good at hitting his targets and is pretty dang elusive (love that about him). Elijah can throw a rope when he needs to ! !

All of that said, there were several drops, fumbles and interceptions today in 3/4 contact scrimmage today, equally shared by DB, AA and ES (and the RB's and receivers).

The comradery among the QB's is unbelievable. They are always encouraging each other, despite the competition.

I like our receivers, also. There are a couple of sleepers there.

But, to anyone whose been to a spring game, know this:

wow that was a great play! (oops, did our defense mess up?)

One thing for certain (IMO), there is a great attitude and effort going on in practice by the players, coaches and support people! Let's hope it pays off.

I don't go to practices so thanks for the report.I am encouraged to hear about the great effort and camaraderie.

Appleby will start, not because he is leaps and bounds better, but Blough hasn't really done much to show that he is the guy. Appleby will start based on his experience at the position, but there will be a change if he isn't doing well.

I tend to agree. At least so far, it seems that Blough has not taken advantage of the golden opportunity presented to him. I'm not sold on Appleby, but Blough needs to make a move and quickly if he wants to be the starter this season (at least from Day 1).

That said, we've seen the first game starter benched in both of Hazell's first two seasons at Purdue...It wouldn't surprise me at all to see Appleby stumble out-of-the-gate and then get benched for Blough. Not that I am wishing for this, but we have something of a trend thus far...

When camp concludes soon, the FB staff should know whom they are going with and it wouldn't surprise me much if they don't come out and make a big public deal about who it is! All I hope is that the #1 gets most of the reps with the first team when camp breaks in preparation for our season opening game!

Thank you for this report. Good stuff, although I really wish one of our guys would start to separate himself from the pack.

Still think Blough gives us the best in game chance to win.

Too much emphasis by the OC and HC in doing everything "by the book". When team execution isn't high, doing things by the book is a cause for disaster. For their own good, hopefully they realize this sooner, rather than later.

Agree with you for the most part. I think their by the book approach hurt Etling's development quite a bit.

As far as Blough, if he hasnt done enough to distinguish himself compared to AA, im not sure we see him start unless the season turns into a dumpster fire or there is injury

Sounds like AA may be moving even more ahead. If he gets the #1 reps again this afternoon practice then your question is answered. Wouldn't be surprised if they make an announcement Sunday

I would expect that since Hazell probably feels like he has a much improved all-around team this year and more pressure on him to win games, he might have a shorter leash and not wait until game 5 or 6 to make a change. If Appleby comes out looking like the Appleby who ended last season, I would expect Blough to get his chance sooner than later.

In every analysis piece off practice, we have completions-attempts for the QBs and a detailed breakdown of periods/drives, etc. That's the kind of info we provide our members.

Saw Sindelar played with the 1's today just curious who slid down to the 3's for the practice? Not expecting Elijah to start but I would bet the guy with the 2's today is the leader wouldnt be much point to playing our best QB with the 3's.

Looks like Appleby got the nod today. I think this is the best choice for now since no one has stood out and he has the most experience. I hope he does a good job this season. We really need a QB who can step up and lead this team.
