why would anyone who is able-bodied not be required to work in order to receive benefits like food stamps and welfare? How could someone be against this requirement?

Because they don't work, and only serve to hurt vulnerable people.
Are you just repeating what you heard on msnbc, or do you have something to back that up, Ted?

Here is a recent study that says they do work.

They shouldn’t be, thankfully, most aren’t it seems looking at the house votes.

It kind of irritates me that they are saying one of the things Republicans got the Dems to compromise on is that people are able to work up to the age of 54 in order to qualify, where before it was up to 50. If I am misinterpreting this, please let me know but it sounds like they will enforce work requirements on people up to the age of 54, beyond which they will not be expected to work to receive benefits.

I am 73 (in July) and my wife is 72 (this month) and between us we are working, on average, a minimum of 55-60 hours a week. Why should someone start receiving benefits with no expectations of making an effort to deserve it at 54, because they can no longer be expected to work? When so many of us paying the taxes that are supporting those Bennys are way beyond the age of 54. That makes no sense to me. If you are able to work you should be required to do so, until a more reasonable age of 65 or so. That is how long most of us work.

And the idea that requiring work is harmful to those individuals, how can that idea possibly be defended? Almost all of us work, with no issues. It allows us to pay our bills without gov't assistance. That should be the base expectation for everyone who is physically able to do so and not in a position of caring for someone who has no other options for care.

Wow, the rightwing think tank is against the social safety net? I'm so surprised! Cool sanctimonious bullshit she's spewing about spiritual wellbeing in order to push her billionaire bosses' ideology.

There's plenty of actual data you could look at.

One rightwing think tank is worth more than 10 left-wing socialist orgs/pubs of the type you posted, Ted.

There’s always a job that someone can work at unless they are completely disabled.

I’m no dem. Real lefty (you won’t find many if any new dealers in Washington..). But, yeah, let’s do that. As a compromise let’s wipe out war spending and cut most of the subsidies that go to huge corporations. Foreign aid, which is really just payoff money that keeps this system going.. gone. You good with that? Cause I just cut more than a trillion dollars, if not more. What are you cutting with work requirements?

Food stamps and TAND total 135 billion. Meantime we spend a trillion on defense related costs. Last I heard about that we needed to spend that money because saddam had WMDs. Now we are occupying Syria? Why? Syria a threat to our national security? Turns out we are extracting the oil out of Syria. Why should I pay taxes to fund a military to get oil that goes to a multinational? Do I personally profit from that? I do bet that the profits are enough to fund welfare.

Im all for work requirements.. bring back the WPA and fund jobs with a living wage where people can rebuild their own neighborhoods. You game?

The money wasted in this country, and the debt, is to make the rich richer.

I won't get into the class economic discussion because the reality is, the rich make the world go round.

But, to your question; I'm absolutely 100% for reducing war spending, starting with the $250B Biden has sent the Ukraine. So, yes, we're in agreement there.

Can you be more specific in the subsidies going to large corporations? I know that's always a lefty talking point, but what specifically are you referring tax? Tax subsidies? For example, are you in favor of the US Govt providing a tax incentive for a US company not to move a manufacturing facility out of the US?

Foreign aid? Like payments to NATO, which the US makes the vast majority of compared to any other member? Yes, I'm in favor of vastly reducing that expense. So, we agree there.

Oil in Syria. Yes, I'm in favor of pulling out of Syria if we deregulate out own gas/oil industry so that US gas/oil companies have a much easier path to domestic production. What's really dumb is that the US is indirectly funding Russia's war in Ukraine because we've reduced our own domestic gas/oil production to appease the tree huggers in the dem party.

So, I think we have more common ground than you realize.

Actually, you won’t get into it because your propaganda overlords are paid very well to make sure that no class based movement ever takes hold. And that includes everyone from Rachael Maddow to Sean hannity.

Here’s betting you don’t know or interact with many real lefties. Jimmy dore is a real lefty and 90% of his show goes after “lefties.”

10-15 billion per year to fossil fuel companies. I’m equally against most current green subsidies.

Who do you think bought all technology products starting in the 50s until computers could be sold to consumers? Why was that a gift instead of a loan? Pretty easy to make the world go round when you sell to the federal government at usury rates for 40 years.

Why do you keep lying on this topic?

The largest year over year drop in oil production in the US happened in 2020. Why did trump cut production?

I bet it was all because Trump caused covid but covered it up.

Btw, I thought you would be on your way to Ukraine by now to prove your virtue. What is the hold up?

Not sure what I just read.

There's always going to be class warfare. There's always going to be a .01%, 1% 10% and the other end. That's just how a free market society works.

Can you site your source of fossil fuel companies getting 10-14B/year. Not saying it's not true, but prove it.

I’m sure you’re not.. you’ve likely been propagandized with think tank garbage your entire life. As are many of the so called lefties you argue with.

Class warfare? Who is fighting in this war for the working class in Washington? Do you think FDR and Henry Wallace are in power? Now you have two halves of the money uniparty in Washington. Nothing gets done without donors. People on both “sides” of media and politics are paid very well to make sure it stays that way.

Reuters ..

Wanna know the best part? And Republicans do this stuff too. He isn’t going to target shit. He’s saying that knowing the republicans control the house.

Not just free market. Every society I have ever heard of, without exception.

Ohhhhhh. You mean supply and demand are factors? I thought the
president was in charge of oil production.
The prez can have a big impact on supply by foolish politically motivated actions such as axing pipeline projects, subsidizing green pork projects, and draining the strategic reserve to help in elections. Ohhhhh.

Good luck to you in Ukraine. We'll be here talking about how virtuous you are - and commending you for the strength of your convictions. Keep us updated.

Will you be wearing a US flag pin in Ukraine?

well, the great thing about the ole' US of A is that if you're a "have not", nothing is stopping you from becoming a "have"
So, if you're on the wrong end of the socioeconomic spectrum, you have the choice and ability to do something about it.

Please read up on what Biden, the stumbling fool, did to the Keystone pipeline on his very first day in office.

So who is fighting on the half of the working class in your class warfare you claim has always been there?

Now that I told you about subsidies and showed you, what about those? We gotta cut those while we cut welfare right? Way more of those to cut than welfare.

I do fine. I want to live in a functioning society where the promise of my parents generation is delivered again.. work 40 hours a week and you’ll have a house, a vacation once a year, savings, a retirement and you can send your kids to school.

In today’s America 80% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, 50% of working Americans make 30k a year or less, 70% make 50k a year or less. True under Obama, true under trump. True now.

We don’t need to be spending a trillion dollars annually on war related costs while America rots. I want to bring that money home and re-invest it here.

I don’t think that just because I am fortunate and do well, it’s a sustainable strategy to turn a blind eye to so many Americans and just hope I can avoid their neighborhoods.

I definitely don’t blame poor and working class people for the state of America when they have no say in how we are governed.

A slight majority of voters are for work requirements.

But Dem politicians are Leary of them as it is one of the ways to help people get off Govt dependency......can't have that, can't have that at all.

Then why are you using that particular avatar? You like the colors?
Why are you using Hunter Biden? Making a political statement? Expressing an opinion? Making a moral judgement? You trying to show you’re better or worse than him?

If I put a picture of a puppy as my avatar would you demand I adopt one? JFC man, get a life.

I am paying tribute to the smartest guy your savior Joe knows, according to him. (Admittedly, it is possible Joe is confusing Hunter with someone else.)

again, I don't really care about the class warfare stuff. As i said, in the USA, you have every opportunity and ability to be as successful as you wish. Sure, there's luck and circumstance involved, but there's no one stopping anyone from doing anything. Usually it's stopped by poor decisionmaking that has a cascading series of events that leads to people being poor and remaining poor.
People need to focus on getting an education, not having children until married and not having more children than you can afford.
