Why do I have a feeling about coach speak?

Coach Lambert and so forth are talking about the fast pace offense of UT.
Comparing them to Ohio State…yadda…yadda…yadda…Ass kicked. Maybe it is with Karlaftis and Bell out, but Purdue is either rope a doping it or feeling we are about to get smoked.
Read some articles and listened to some interviews. It sounds uneasy to me “the pace, the speed”. I’m tired of hearing the SEC b.s. TN has been lower to middle pack of SEC. Yes, a new coach, good talent, but damn it, we all know the best talent is at Alabama, Georgia and trickling down from there.
If Purdue gets an ass whooping, I’ll be quite disappointed. Hence, I have to believe their is some coach speak and rope a dope going on.
Also, if Wright is out, it is the wrong time!

In all sincerity, does it matter?

They will play the game, and it will be what it will be.

But as you say, coaches are very seldom forthcoming about their strengths or weaknesses. Brohm very seldom provides much information about his players or his plans. if Wright is out, you will never find out about him from Brohm.

Yes, It should matter more than a glorified exhibition game. Pride and accomplishing 9-4 is a much better ceiling than 8-5.
Results get the attention of potential recruits as well.
Okay, yeah, you missed the point of my question.

There's a lot of machinations(?) about Bell, Karlaftis, Wright, etc....

It will be what it will be, bro. They will play the game, and it will be what it will be. "Fast paced", or not. "Rope a dope" or not.

I get the “it will be what it will be”, and I get the Vegas line -4.5. A competitive game and a loss not great, but will be ok.
An Auburn style drubbing and it dampers the season we just had and loses some steam in talent interest in Purdue.
Hope that Brohm, Coaches and Team do better in Nashville this time around.

Agree, and I expect they will.

Completely different situation.

I feel this is very different than the Auburn situation. Tennessee is good offensively but it’s really dependent on their QB and how he plays. They have enough at RB and WR that if everybody is playing well and your D isn’t, they will put up points for sure. Before playing Alabama, they put up the most points on UGAs historic defense than anybody had and really dictated the pace of game in the first 20 mins.

The biggest difference is that they aren’t half as good as that Auburn team was on defense. They aren’t terrible but they are very susceptible to the big pass play which would bode well for us if we had Bell and Wright….

The SEC speed thing…it’s real. Remember….we got torched by the Schwartz kid at Auburn who now plays in the pros solely based off his 40 time and how it translates on they field. Our starting CB for that team was out and they feasted on that mismatch and put that game away with him before it even really started. I feel we are both better at CB now AND they don’t have a guy at WR that can consistently do that to us.

Should be a decent game but you won’t catch me taking Purdue +4.5 here.

Last MCBowl, speed killed us, against OSU speed killed us. Lets hope Tenn does not have their kind of speed especially if we have 3 or more of our best players out.

The last Music City Purdue team had an atrocious defense. Like 80+ in S&P+. This year our defense is solid with an offense that, over the last few games, is just as good as the 2018 offense.

Tennessee will play fast, and may run out to a quick lead, but their defense isn't very good and playing fast can end up biting you in the arse too.

I like your analysis and know our defense has been completely re-vamped with a more aggressive style. You never can tell in these lower tier bowls (glorified exhibitions) how the players and coaches react from year to year & conference to conference. I guess we'll know what we are in for once it kicks off and a few series in. Hope for the best.
Thanks for your review and response.

I think this team is going to be highly motivated to not have another blowout loss in a Music City Bowl. They may not win. But I don't see a blowout happening...

Man I hope not. For as meaningless as people say these games are, they sure do remember the thumpin Auburn put on us. It didn’t do any favors for the national perception of us against big name programs whether people want to admit it or not. A blowout here probably wouldn’t help with recruiting either. My opinion anyways

We're probably going to lose. We don't have the depth to lose George and be ok. It's part of rebuilding. Brohm has us in the right direction, no reason to be flustered if we lose without the main guns. Enjoy the bowl win or lose.

As a UT fan, I really wish we were seeing you guys at full strength with #3 and #5.

What worries me is that we come out playing zone and let AOC methodically pick us apart. Vols have one capable pass rusher and often have to bring a LB to get pressure. The strategy to beat Tennessee is keep our defense on the field by controlling the ball and clock, then try to force some quick 3-and-outs when we have the ball.

This Vols team starts fast, and I suspect this game might go that way, at least in the 1st quarter. Purdue will settle in and adjust to the tempo after a few series. I know that “SEC speed” is an old cliche, but the Vols have not been a particularly fast team in recent years. This year is different - we have a few guys on the outside who can really run - and this scheme puts athletes out in space. I like the perimeter matchups.

The homer in me could see UT winning big. It’s tempting to think that way given a history of success against B1G teams in bowl games. However, I thought we would blow out IU in the 2019 Gator bowl, and obviously that did not happen as we were lucky to get a W. Vegas probably has the line right.

may have to throw to the TE's a little more.
That’s the ace in the hole Brohm has. Several weeks to prepare, a huge playbook to pick from, and some very capable tight ends. I’d like to see them whip out the old Patriots offense with short passes to the slot and downfield to tight ends.

Agree, I believe that Anthrop and Sheffield could also have big days, as well as some opportunities for the backs in passes to the flats.
