Hill & Hill, first & last game at PG. PG will be the most interesting position to watch this season.

This would probably be the safe/obvious choice.

Who'll start preseason game #1 at SG?

RD, probably the safe/obvious choice, first & last game of the season. RD needs to be on the floor most.

Who'll start first & last game of season at SF? Good, proven back ups here.

VE would probably be the choice here, first & last game of the season. Plenty of depth here.

These choices assume we don't have any unforseen circumstances, i. e. injuries, suspensions, ect., ect...

I don't see Painer changing our lineup [baring unforseen circumstances] to match up with other teams. I see inferior teams possibly doing that on occasion to compete with Purdue.

Purdue starting lineup, game #1?

PG: Hill
SG: RD
SF: VE
PF: CS
C: AJH

Possibly breaking/playing themselves into the starting lineup somewhere throughout the season, DM or KS.

I love that lineup, but the lack of an outside threat does concern me a bit. Our main threats (Stephens, Mathias, and Cline) all sitting expect a LOT of sagging zones.

Game 1 - Hill, Davis, Edwards, Swanigan, Hammons
- Johnny Hill is brought in to start as a safety blanket with experience. He is a leader, but still struggles a bit with the pace of the game.
- Swanigan is brought in and his talent is undeniable. Destroys the cupcakes in the preseason and OOC. Stats dip in conference play.

Final Game (For the NCAA title lol) PJT, Davis, Mathias, Edwards, Hammons
- PJ proves himself to be a fan favorite and reliable Sophomore PG averages 7 points, 3.5 assists for the season.
- Hill shows that his mid major experience translates to backup PG in the B1G.
- Mathias is worked into the rotation because Painter is a fan of hustle and court awareness. His 3P% and chemistry with the front court makes him a must-start.
- Vince makes second team All-B1G.
- AJH is first team All-B1G and DPOY.
- Swanigan becomes the first player off the bench and second leading scorer and plays the 4 and more at the 5 than originally intended.
- Isaac Haas sees minutes decrease but has flashes of brilliance. He is projected as the best B1G center in 2017.
- Stephens becomes a sporadic 3-P specialist given about 8 min/game. Finds his shot in the B1G tourney with great reward. It's his team in 2016-17 and named team captain for the coming year.

Flame away.

No flaming but I think Hill has the most to prove to earn playing time. I am not ready to call him a backup ahead of PJ until I see him in action. He may be all that, but if not, he won't play much let alone start ahead of guys like Stephens and Mathias. I also doubt we see many teams before January that we can't run one of Edwards, Davis, or Marhias at the point for a good part of the time. So in my eyes Hill needs to come in hitting on all cylinders. I hope he does and I understand why he was brought in. But I think Swanigan joining the team changed that scenario and may have never happened had we signed them in reverse order.

Just what I see in June. So I wouldn't take it too seriously. But I don't see Painter bypassing guys who earned serious playing time during the conference last year for a guy who hasn't shown he can play against the teams in the 100-200 range. If he does, I don't see that lookin very positive for future recruits who feel they can earn time at multiple positions.

Personally I think that you almost have to have AJH/Biggie/VE starting all season long. After that, it may depend on match ups more than anything as to who fills the remaining spots.

Also it may depend on the level of competition. Let's face it, we could start AJH/Biggie/VE and the two fat guys that sat in front of me last season at a game against the Incarnate Word and still win by 20.

It wouldn't shock me to see Davis as our starting point by season's end either. I read somewhere that he wanted to work on being a PG because that is his best shot at playing somewhere after college.

Purdue starting lineup, game #1:

PG: PJ (SO) (Because Hill will need to learn offense and defense schemes at Purdue quick plus heal up to 100% before he will be ready)
SG: RD (SR)
SF: VE (SO)
PF: CS (FR)
C: AJH (SR)

Purdue starting lineup, game #1 of Big Ten:

PG: Hill/PJ split time based on match-ups and Hill's health, but will have Hill starting because of size and experience by Big Ten
SG: Stephens/Mathias (Coin flip on who had a good week of practice)
SF: RD/VE/BS (I give the nod to Davis because of defense and being a senior, but VE and BS will see the floor a bunch at the 3 and 4)
PF: CS (I also see Taylor and Edwards getting minutes here and starting sometimes depending on health, effort in practice and match-ups)
C: AJH (I also see Haas starting some games depending on health and match-ups)

*Note: Red-shirt for Cline

Next years starting line up:
1) PJ/Weatherford (JR/SO)
2) Stephens/Mathias/Cline (SR/JR/RS FR)
3) Edwards/Smotherman (JR/SR)
4) Biggie/Edwards (SO/RS SO) (or Taylor depending on if Biggie is one and done (I don't think so I think he is with us for at least 2)
5) Haas (JR/RS SO) (or Taylor)

I like the depth of our team and I think the success depends on the following:
1) Hill and his health and grasping of our Purdue system
2) Development of PJ on his summer tour in China
3) The play of the Juniors, Smotherman and Stephens (Key next year too)
4) The sophomores understanding their roles on this loaded team and maybe not getting the minutes they got last year and understanding it and playing for the team knowing their time is coming.

Last point is key:
5) How Painter plugs and plays all of this talent....he will need to do his best coaching job thus far.

Boiler Up! Going to be fun to watch

I agree for Davis's to play in the league he has to play at the 1 or 2. So hopefully this off season he has been working and improving either his outside shot or his dribbling and passing. If he has improved well enough to be an above average B1G player at either of this positions, then Purdue should definitely make the final 4.

I'm going to go way out on a limb and predict that by the end of the year the starting backcourt will be Mathias and Stephens. Mathias will surprise with his point guard skills and scrappy defense. Stephens will bounce back in a big way. When they are on the court together along with Edwards or Davis, Purdue will be able to isolate Swanigan in the high post with Hammons in the low post. I really think that in a 3 out-2 in offense, it is very important to be able to spread the court and give the two posts room to work.

However, I don't think Painter adjusts his offensive strategy this year based on getting Swanigan. He has stated he is a completely different type of big man compared to Hammons and Haas. What he lacks in the interior post (what Haas and Hammons do really well) he makes up for in his ability to stretch a defender in to the exterior and take them off the dribble. The things that is going to really make teams struggle is matching up with Swanigan and Hammons/Haas. Remember that Swanigan is roughly 6'10 and will more than likely be playing near 250-260. Are there a lot of teams that can place a defender with comparable size to defend him in the post ALONG with defending him off the dribble? You allow him to work in the sequence of the offense that we as fans saw last season (essentially a weave that looks to isolate Hammons and a shooter) but you now add the ability to isolate Swanigan and his defender on the backside (via ball reversal) or you bring Swanigan in to the high post and allow him to work and create a shot/dump off to Hammons.

I agree with a lot of what you are saying, except that I really think that Painter will try to exploit the advantage in size and strength that Swanigan presents at the 4, especially since Swanigan is a great passer. Along with Hammons/Haas, Swanigan will present one of the two greatest mismatches for Purdue. It will be very hard to deny both. If Painter can surround them with smart shooters, they will be extremely hard to defend, IMO.
