I think the most frustrating thing for me is to see the lack of urgency from the football program. There are obviously 2 people "attacked" on here - Hazell and Burke. I actually think people give Hazell too much of a pass and go straight to Burke. I don't know if that's just people giving up on Hazell or what.
However, from day 1, I think Hazell has done a horrible job trying to brand this football program. Basically when he started, the "external" feel of the program didn't change (as I'm sure there were differences internally amongst the team) .
And while we've continued to struggle, Hazell has come out with this "State of Purdue" that we're supposedly concentrated on in recruiting (which is the most general thing), but we aren't. We're doing nothing to strengthen the recruiting in the state. We aren't doing football camps that are friendly to recruits anymore than 1 hour away from Purdue (they are all day camps).
Now, you are essentially hitting the reset button with new coordinators and trying to start fresh. And what do they do? Nothing. There's no strategies laid out for recruiting, there's no explanation of how things are going forward with new coordinators, etc.
Being a successful football program (unless you're named Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson, Michigan, etc.) involves selling yourself. Not just to recruits but to your fans. And quite frankly, the selling yourself to your fans (the public) also gets you attention that recruits see.
I just haven't seen that from Hazell and his staff, or even any interest in doing it. While that does also fall on Burke, he can't just hold the football coach's hand in everything. Look at Painter - the guy knew what he wanted and he made it happen and literally had to threaten to leave to get it. Purdue's doing a lot more "fan friendly" and program friendly things with football and it's like we're desperately trying to prop them up. For once, it'd be nice to see the football program try to do things they can do themselves. The athletic department should not be responsible for holding their hands.
