As a UGA alum and a Purdue fan living in Atlanta, here is my take.
I don't overall hate the hire. I think there were better out there but also likely far, far worse. Tech has an interesting conundrum in athletics.....they are in the most fertile recruiting ground in the US for all of their sports (Baseball, BBall, Football) yet don't really seem to recruit up to snuff. Some similarities there, as Purdue has a top tier BBall recruiting ground but we are one of the worst talent states for football out there....especially having to support 4 FBS programs in state, which is just as many as Georgia has with about literally 10x the talent base to pull from in state.
MB walked into a bad situation at Tech for sure. A terrible basketball hire with Brain Gregory and a football team that is stagnant at best (but yes, better than ours right now). Sure, GT had a great year 2 years ago but before that and since it's been a lot of 6-6 and a lot of bad defeats (think Danny Hope esque). He certainly has his work cut out for him here at Purdue....but he's being blown a lot of shit for the Josh Pastner hire but I think that is as good as a program like Tech could do after 6 seasons with no tournament appearances. Pastner can recruit his balls off (although he's a terrible in game coach....think the opposite of Painter) and I think that is the perfect strategy for a team that stands where Tech is at....where the baseline of talent is at an all time low and you reside in a VERY talent rich city, state and region and play in a top 2 power conference. I think the Pastner hire was a home run for the situation they were in. It tells me that MB knew the current situation, knew what they needed (an infusion of talent) and tried to set themselves on a new direction.
I'd be totally cool with him bringing in a great recruiter as Purdue basketball or football's next hire and then letting those guys bring in top tier coaches to assemble a good staff.
I'm taking a wait and see approach on this as of now. I don't hate it though.
