Welcome Mr. Strickland to Purdue! We are happy to have you!!
Mark Hagen strikes again
I have been tempering my enthusiasm with individual football recruits. It's a big jump physically from high school to D1 and sometimes the skills translate right away, sometimes they don't. Strickland as a recruit appears to be somewhere between GK, an immediate impact starter, and Dontay Hunter, who hasn't gotten off the bench.Question for those in the know? Weak side DE? And I know that they rate these guys based on their likelihood to contribute early.. no one is expecting karlaftis, but might he be of the echelon that he could hit the field some in 2022?
That really depends on the roster in ‘22.Question for those in the know? Weak side DE? And I know that they rate these guys based on their likelihood to contribute early.. no one is expecting karlaftis, but might he be of the echelon that he could hit the field some in 2022?
Dude you follow ND and that’s cool.. this season I’m happy if we have two good starters. George staying healthy and then another guy who can get SOME pressureThat really depends on the roster in ‘22.
He could show up and already be better than a few guys and play because the DL will always rotate at minimum a two deep.
The goal is to have a roster deep enough that a freshman will probably not be needed and just get in on a rotational basis.
Dontay Hunter? I hope he’s a lot closer to George than Hunter.I have been tempering my enthusiasm with individual football recruits. I’m very close with people involved with Purdue’s program. I am former teammates with Mitrione & one of my other training partners is a strength & conditioning coach who works with Purdue athletes. And obviously have very close friends in the area who are Purdue grads. Since Purdue & ND rarely play at the same time, I watch almost every Purdue game with them. So I know the program fairly well.Dude you follow ND and that’s cool.. this season I’m happy if we have two good starters. George staying healthy and then another guy who can get SOME pressure
So you know that we have one known good player at DE overall.. karlaftis.. some other guys may show they are good this coming year but that’s what we have going into campI’m very close with people involved with Purdue’s program. Saw Strickland live last year against Cathedral. Brebeuf was extremely overmatched talent wise but Strickland held his own being constantly double teamed. Also, followed Strickland a little because he had told a few sites he wanted to go to ND two years ago & since I’m close I watched him play a little. Caden Curry too, who lives right near me. I was actually surprised Strickland was ranked in the top 250 & really surprised Curry was a borderline 5 Star at the time.
Strickland is a really good, intelligent kid. I actually thought he was going to Stanford. Purdue got a great kid.
Yeah, I was just saying in general terms that an incoming freshman on the DL shouldn’t be needed. I’m guessing Strickland will play as a freshman. So you know that we have one known good player at DE overall.. karlaftis.. some other guys may show they are good this coming year but that’s what we have going into camp
He’s not a take at OSU right now. They might circle back to him because he grew up an OSU fan and wants to go there. But his ranking is not accurate of how and who is recruiting him. A lot of teams didn’t offer or offered really late when they missed out on their first choice. The big programs are still slow playing him, & some who have offered aren’t recruiting him at all.Saw Strickland live last year against Cathedral. Curry is very good. Will likely end up at OSU and should excel there.
Curry? He has 3 visits scheduled, Alabama, Ohio State, and Clemson. He's going to one of those schools. No clue what ND is doing not offering him. He’s not a take at OSU right now. If you read the OSU & Bama sites, they are saying neither is pushing for him. I don’t know about Clemson. ND had him in person & didn’t like him as much as Lucas & now Hero. He reminds me a lot of Robbins, who started off ranked a top 100 player that no one was pushing for. I saw him play & had the same opinion as Curry…good, but not great, too 100 player. Penn State is expected to play a FR on the DL.Yeah, I was just saying in general terms that an incoming freshman on the DL shouldn’t be needed. I’m guessing Strickland will play as a freshman.
Shouldn’t be needed is pretty clear.Penn State is expected to play a FR on the DL.
There's talk that Nash Hutmacher could see PT in Lincoln. (Dude's a beast.)
I know you cut yourself some wiggle room by adding "in general terms". Not sure what "shouldn't be needed" means. It's not common for established programs, it's not ideal, but when you get a guy with the strength and talent, he'll play. For the Purdue DL, the challenge of depth has long been discussed here. That was likely a big selling point, in addition to academics.
there was no comment in my post about anything not being clear. That much should have been abundantly clear.Shouldn’t be needed is pretty clear.
If you recruit & develop a good roster, a freshman generally won’t be needed to play on the DL. With a two deep rotation you will see it, but that’s because it’s a bonus, not needed, by better teams. Breese, the #1 player in the country coming out, was a backup as a freshman at Clemson.
Freak, top 50 players, will play as freshman on the OL/DL, but that’s the exception, not the rule. Naming only two guys yourself proves that point. It’s not a good thing.
Hunter was a solid recruiting get. Offers from several P5 programs. He just hasn't shown himself to be an early contributor.Dontay Hunter? I hope he’s a lot closer to George than Hunter.
there was a family connection right? That tends to be the rare occasion when Purdue gets a good one and we don’t find out “oh, SO THAT is why we got him.”
as opposed to getting some guy from Hershey PA and finding out that people in Pennsylvania must have known something
Between where they are rated yesHunter was a solid recruiting get. Offers from several P5 programs. He just hasn't shown himself to be an early contributor.
In terms of the recruiting evaluations, the services place Strickland squarely in between Karlaftis and Hunter. Their offers reflect the same. My guess is he will be a rotaional player next year behind the more developed '19 and '20 recruits. If it was 2018 he'd probably be starting from day 1.
Grades?Curry? He has 3 visits scheduled, Alabama, Ohio State, and Clemson. He's going to one of those schools. No clue what ND is doing not offering him.
lol I used to train with Mitrione before he got into the MMA stuff, loved that dude. Good get here for PU. No sour grapes here.I’m very close with people involved with Purdue’s program. Well if neither Bama, OSU, Clemson want him we'll gladly take him in Bloomington. If you read the OSU & Bama sites, they are saying neither is pushing for him. I don’t know about Clemson. DLs are probably more resistant to the Rev's message of love than other positions.Lol! Allen loses another DL!
Where at?lol I used to train with Mitrione before he got into the MMA stuff, loved that dude. Good get here for PU. No sour grapes here.
I follow Cathedral closely. Definitely has the size and measurables that make your head turn. Need to see him produce on the field though first, played limited snaps as a sophomore last year. Believe he showed out well in numerous camps and P5 offers started coming in. I know IU and Iowa have offered and believe Purdue has as well.Another kid that Purdue (and Indiana) should jump on (I think they both have already offered), is Kendrick Gilbert, 2023 DL from Cathedral. He got offered at a ND camp, and his sister plays BB at ND, and he has said in interviews ND is his leader, but my understanding is ND is being very selective in the 2023 class because they already have a 5 Star commit and another top 100 commit at DL for 2023. So it sounds like ND probably not going to push for him.
He could end up a 4 Star & stay in-state, so Purdue should go all out for him. I like his upside a lot.
Matt is no slouch for sure. I didn't think he would beat Joey Beltran. I was at ring side when my buddy fought Joey in Newkirk.lol I used to train with Mitrione before he got into the MMA stuff, loved that dude. Good get here for PU. No sour grapes here.
Funny you said Beltran. My buddy lost to him in Newkirk, Oklahoma in Bellator.Where at?
I was his teammate & sparring partner starting with his Kimbo fight then Beltran fight in Indy, all the way up a couple years ago when I stopped competing.
What year did you graduate?Shouldn’t be needed is pretty clear.
