Welcome Mr. Gibbs

Smith seems like a really good recruit to me. He obviously can shoot and pass. He is quick, especially with the ball. He has the build of a slightly shorter Chris Kramer and the competitive fire to go with it. I think that he may just turn out to be the surprise recruit of the class.
Complaints are likely from the same folks that ragged on Ethan Morton last season…
If you listened to CMP, he had high praise for Ethan.
I believe I will trust him on this one also.

According to Rivals, Colvin is a 3 star with offers from IUPUI, Miami Ohio, Tulane, Butler, and IU. Other than Purdue, no offers from top programs.
Lil Andy defending the Lil Guards.
Napoleon complex?
I thought stars were all that mattered to you? Moving the goalposts again, I see?
Nope. Stars are important, but I look at size, physical talent, who is is recruiting the kid, etc.
For players like Edwards and Ivey, if you could read my posts before they even stepped foot on campus, I said they would be differencemakers.

Hmmm. No one else on this board is talking obsessively about size. Projecting?

And you are shamelessly revising your own history. Your first post about all of these players was harping and whining about Painter recruiting low-rated players with limited offer list. It is your cut-and-paste, no-thinking pattern, as you have done in this thread and every thread about Purdue recruits. You can't help yourself. We have seen it for years. That, and moving the goalposts, which you are failing to do now.

You seem very thin-skinned recently, even more than normal. Are you upset because Purdue is winning and you can't pat yourself on the back for your imagined victory?

Sorry Lil Andy, lover of Lil guards, but you’re incorrect.

Let us know who the next 5’10 Diamond in the rough is.

And there you go again. lol.

Time is running out. If you plan to bring in the team's savior, Xavier Johnson, before the next semester, you'd better get on it. We don't want to see you harping and whining in the 2nd half of the year because you harped and whined incessantly this half in multiple threads that we needed him, and then you did nothing about it. Set a meaningful goal for yourself instead of for other people. No excuses. WE ARE COUNTING ON YOU!

I remember seeing similar reports.

The summer after Smith's sophomore year:
NICK BAUMGART: You’re dunking the basketball will ease now. That’s wild. You look like you have pretty long arms. Any idea your wingspan?

BRADEN SMITH: Yeah I’m dunking. My wingspan is 74.5″ across (with a height of 72” tall last measurement).

This season:
Smith took a pass from Haffner and knocked down a three to give Westfield a 34-30 lead late in the third quarter. The Purdue-bound guard played better as the game developed. Smith opened the fourth with an alley-oop dunk thrown by Haffner. On the following possession, Smith found Haffner for an easy layup. Suddenly, Westfield held a ten-point lead.

Bone will just assume he's lying as the lack of video means it can't be true.

Is 5-11, 168 too small?
Depends on a bunch of other factors.
If he doesn’t have elite athleticism, speed, jumping ability, etc and if the only schools recruiting him are D2, lower level non-basketball schools (because that’s evidence that D1 coaches don’t think he’s got the talent), then yes, he’s too small.

You keep ragging on undersized guards. So, it sounds like size isn't the issue, and that can be put to rest.

You say it "(d)epends on a bunch of other factors". What are all these factors (I see "etc.", which means there are more), is there a scale for each, and is there a weighting for those?

How do you measure "elite athleticism, speed, jumping ability, etc"? Are there specific measurements to make them "elite"? Is there some scale, in which "elite" is at the top, and then "very, very good but not quite elite" is slightly below, then.... ("etc.", as you say) ... just like the Francon levels? Where would we find that criteria? (Or, is all this still being worked out in your mind?)

Finally, if a player is not recruited by the "right" schools, do we deny his talent, thus denying entry into the NBA because he's not worthy of a contract?

Lots and lots of questions.

Elite athleticism, especially for a small guard, is like pornography: you know it when you see it.
Example: Carsen Edwards.

And yes, who else is recruiting a kid is a very good indicator of what level coaches think he can succeed, especially if he isn’t elite.
Smith had offers from Montana, App State and maybe Buffalo?

You say "you know it when you see it." Who is "you"? You mean, YOU? With respect, what credentials/expertise do you hold?

Ja Morant. Offers? (Hint: Murray State)

Steph Curry. Offers? Look him up, you don't want him. Undersized, no elite anything, no enviable offers, the kid sucked.

Shall we discuss others, or does this part of the conversation not fit the narrative?

Edit: You mentioned Edwards. No, you don't get to claim him. He was undersized with ZERO enviable offers, and was an afterthought.

Ha ha. Yeh, let’s cherry pick. You know, Michael Jordan got cut from his high school team.

Show me the video and I’ll believe it.
LOL. After you criticised Painter recruiting Ivey, you claim that you saw a video of him that convinced you that his low rating and lack of major offers didn't matter to you <smirk>. I suspect that you can't show us a video of Ivey dunking in high school.

But wait until after the New Year to search for it. We want you 100% dedicated to bringing on board the missing piece to Purdue's national championship, Xavier Johnson, before the start of the 2nd semester. BOILER NATION IS COUNTING ON YOU!

No he didn't get cut, thats a myth. Look into it. Jordan still lies about that to this day. His coach wanted him to get maximum playing time by having him play j.v. rather than 10 or so minutes as a freshman on varsity.

Let it go Andy, you guys argue with bonefish too much.

Not even coaches know if a recruit like Smith will have a big impact, so why argue about it. We'll know in a couple years if Smith can play. Until then what's the point of debating it. It's an argument that no one can win.

Painter has brought in guys that turned out better than expected and some never panned out. Good Purdue teams have historically had a few key guys on the roster with the rest being solid role players. Could Smith be "the guy" at Purdue? I doubt it. But could he be one of the role players? Maybe, but I don't know.

But neither does anyone else.

This and I am just as guilty as anyway. Arguing with that guy is like trying to teach a cat how to drive. He claims to have all the answers but yet lacks the courage to call in, email or carrier pigeon his ideas to Painter. So at this point all he is looking for is internet 'glory' and nothing more.

Oh, Lil Andy, you're reaching now.

But, don't forget to say how I criticized Painter for recruiting Colvin because he didn't have enough stars or big time offers. Keep that in your Lil back pocket Lil Feller.

not cherry picking at all, ha ha. Just attempting to apply your criteria.

you seem to be convinced in your assessment. Either it works, or it doesn't. Right?
For every Ja Morant or Steph Curry, there's 5,000 other small players who just weren't good enough to play at a P5 bball school.
There's no shame in that. Valpo, Evansville, ISU, etc need players to.

I agree, but what fun would the board be if we're all going to agree on everything and turn it into a stroke fest like Lil Andy, 42 and BBQ do to eachother?
I hope, with all my heart, that Smith is a key component to multiple FF runs and NCs. I'd love nothing more and I'll be there in person cheering him on.
But......historically, 5'10, 165# guards, who aren't exceptionally athletically gifted, who were only being recruited by D2 non-basketball schools, usually don't become difference makers. Obviously there are exceptions, and I hope he is one.
More likely, he's a solid practice player, maybe provides a few minutes of D or 3 pt shooting off the bench (since Gibbs is our PG of the future) .

That's all true, and irrelevant. They have the talent, and both would have been tremendous additions to the Purdue program, in spite of not meeting your approval.

I hope every recruit that I'm not excited about proves to be a big time contributor. Yeh, Ja Morant or Steph Curry would have been tremendous additions to Purdue (and Duke, and Kentucky and........)

If Smith makes it to the NBA, I'll be super excited (and shocked).

Well, I would be shocked if he made it to the NBA, as well, but that, too, is irrelevant!

Never said it was relevant. One of the 3 Muskateers was using Morant and Curry as examples of guys who weren't highly recruited but became NBA stars.
Maybe Smith will be like that guard from Maryland (name is drawing a blank, but I think his nickname was White Chocolate).

Wow, Lenny....you're working overtime for the holidays. :)

I thought "White Chocolate" was Jason Williams Marshall/Florida, but could be wrong. Steve Blake perhaps?

Smith can dunk, now I believe it. Good job on finding the video.
Wait, what?
You haven't even watched his videos, and you're 💩 all over him?

You wrote: Elite athleticism, especially for a small guard, is like pornography: you know it when you see it.

You haven't watched him, and you've been rippin' on the kid solely because he doesn't have the "right" offers.

Dude.

No, I've watched his videos. Nothing jumped out at me and said "Purdue absolutely needs this kid". To me, he looks like an undersized sg/pg, with good court vision, a nice 3 pt stroke, plays hard. There's a ton of those types of players playing IN high school basketball.
Why do you think he only had offers from App St, Buffalo and Montana? Is he really that much of a hidden gem?
Maybe he is, but when coaches jobs literally depend on who they recruit and no P5 program was willing to take a change on him, that has to be taken into consideration.
As I said, maybe he'll develop into a solid contributor or maybe he'll be a solid practice player since there's only so much playing time available.
