Welcome to the February 10th rendition of the Weekly Upload. A recap of news, events, and recruiting for this week. I appreciate you all reading and following!
As you guys can all tell by our content, Purdue Football Recruiting has slowed way down.
That is because it is now the dead period, in NCAA Football. Basically, nothing can happen currently. Coaches cannot visit players, players cannot visit the campus, etc.
But, Purdue should have a big junior day early on in March, where their priority prospects will visit the campus, or at least invites will be extended for their priority prospects to come to campus.
The Boilermakers will plan on inviting and hosting highly sought-after in-state prospects.
Purdue hired Special Teams Analyst, Chris Petrilli. Presumably, he will control all of the game-planning aspects of Special Teams, but there will be assistant coaches who will be point men in each special teams facet of the game.
Petrilli has been the Special Teams Coordinator at North Texas for the last two seasons. It is a new approach for Purdue to be a Special Teams Analyst of sorts, but about half of college football has gone this route.
Purdue is mostly done with their entire operational staff. But, they are searching for Graduate Assistants still to come to Purdue. I am unsure if there will be any players that have graduated that will remain at Purdue to help in that role, but they are putting feelers out.
Purdue has maybe the youngest staff in college football, it should be an exciting spring and then the season, the entire operation has a totally different feel than the last staff.. Almost like a breath of fresh air.
It is believed that Graham Harrell, Kevin Kane, and Cory Patterson will have three-year contracts for Coach Walters, something that never happened with the last staff, as well as Graham Harrell being rumored to be Purdue’s first million-dollar assistant.
The other position coaches are said to have two-year contracts. I remember the days when Coach Joe Tiller begged for multi-year contracts for his assistants and Morgan Burke turned him down yearly.
The men’s basketball team is nearing its 25th Big Ten Championship. With 6 games to go, Purdue has a 3 game lead in the loss column and travels to Northwestern Sunday, where they could stretch the lead in the loss column over the Wildcats.
If some games fall correctly, Purdue could win the conference as early as the away game at Maryland, which will be a tough game in itself.
The fact is, Purdue controls their own destiny still and while the IU loss stunk for a variety of reasons, Purdue is still in the driver’s seat for #25. As well as having the best regular season record since the Great Depression Era, when the Boilers went 18-2 during the 1937-1938 season.. If you want to count something that far back.
It very could well have the best-winning % season since Coach Keady’s 1987-1988 team, a truly remarkable feat.
As it stands today, the Purdue Men are still seeded as the number one overall seed, according to ESPN bracketology.
It is a hell of a region though, with Auburn as the 9 seed, TCU as the 5, Xavier as the 4, Creighton as the 6 seed, Iowa State the 3, and UCLA at 2. Not only that, a tough Maryland squad is the 7 seed in the region.
It doesn’t matter really who we have, it is the top 64 teams in college basketball and there has been more parity than ever in the men’s game. But, Purdue is obviously setting itself up very well.
According to ESPN, the Purdue Women’s Basketball Team is in, as it stands on February 10th. ESPN has the Boilers as an 11 seed, playing 6th seed Arizona. They also list them as the “last four byes”.
If the women do in fact make the tournament, it will be the first time since the 2016-2017 season that they have been involved in something other than the NIT. Last year’s squad made it to the second round of the NIT.
Before last season, their last postseason play was the 2017-2018 season in the NIT as well. The previous two years before that season, they made it to the NCAA Tournament. In the 2016-2017 season, they made it to the round of 32, where they lost to eventual final 4 team Notre Dame, only by 6. In 2015-2016 they were bounced in the first round.
It would be a great leap for Katie Gearlds in only her second season leading her Alma Mater.
