Been reading a lot about how Purdue may not be as good next year due to only Edwards coming in (so far) and with the seniors graduating. I still think we should be good.
Haas should be back and has looked good when he stays out of foul trouble. Vince Edwards will be back and is only getting better. We have great shooters in Mathias, Stephens and Cline. And hopefully Biggie will be back and will contribute for us.

Agree. Plus we get Basil's back. If Biggie stays we could be very. ..very good.

Many folks are concerned about the light weight 2016 class. They some how think it will relate to a poor year in 2017. Like you, I think this is weak cause & effect thinking. The kids coming back in 2016 are going to be a great team, Biggie or no Biggie. We don't need to replace AJ and Ray Davis in kind to be a good team. We will need leadership of the type Ray has provided, but that is not going to come from a 2016 freshman. Ergo: 2016 recruiting does not affect our 2016 season, for the most part. (Please, don't go out on the fringe of this statement and give me some hypothetical argument about getting the next Lebron in 2016).

Frankly, I think Biggie woould be best served by returning for another year. He is good, but the development he will get under this staff will make a big difference in his professional career. If he does, Haas, Taylor, Edwards and Biggie will be plenty of front line horsepower, especially with smotherman coming back into the mix. We might even add another 5th year guy in the guard slot.

I'm not particularly worried about 2016. Still too many variables to even consider it. 2017 is another story. I believe a good chunk of our best players will be gone by that point, and even if we pull in a good / great class in 2017, that would still be relying on a bunch of freshmen to be ready to play early.
That's still a long way off though, so I'm not going to get my panties in a wad about it until there's a need for it.

You haven't counted our annual 5th-year transfer player for 2016 either.

Ditto on 2016 as I think a poor class there will have little impact on the program other than perhaps a small step back in 2017. The 2017 core will be Cline, Mathias, Basil, plus whoever might be left from Haas/Edwards/Swanigan. If we get 2-3 impact players in the 2017 class they should be ready to step up and be the "new core" in 2018. Really my only concern with a weak 2016 class is less margin for error in terms of attrition.

Good chance that starting front court next year is Taylor/Edwards.

Haas and Biggie most likely gone. IMO.

Your last sentence is correct. Less good players signed in 2016 means more of an importance in 2017. I am hoping Purdue has a really strong year this season and the 2017 class gets excited about us. Plus, they should have opportunities for playing time.

Haas' family told me last year at Vandy that he wants the education and that he would likely stay at least 3 years.

For what it's worth I think he stays.

What I didn't say in my post in regards to 2017 is that I expect / fear that at least two of the three (Haas, Edwards, Swanigan) will be gone, thus my belief that we would be relying on the freshmen for support.

Add Carsen, lose Ray, AJ and Johnny Hill. Net loss.

Lose Biggie, Vince and/or Haas, a much worse loss.

Basil's return mitigates that somewhat. Love to see Taylor bloom into what we think/hope is his potential, but forgive me for getting impatient.

Who replaces Ray as team leader next season? I see 2 or 3 good candidates. Agree we should have another nice year.

But our thin 2016 recruiting class means we will need a grand slam next season.

For some reason I see Dakota picking up the leadership spot... can't put my finger on why yet, but him or maybe even Cline.

If we have the big year we hope to have, recruiting should benefit. Get Mackey cranking, win some big games, and bring in a late recruit or two for 2016 and then have a big year in 2017.

If I were to guess I would say Kendall or Isaac

I don't like to think about players leaving early but realize it is a reality you have to live with if you are going to recruit high level players. That said, here are my thoughts on our current roster and prospects for next year: We aren't going to lose anyone except current seniors. Isaac, Vince and Caleb will all be here next year. I like them very much and think their futures all look very promising but unless they really go crazy during the heart of our schedule and the tournament they will be back next year. They have holes in their current game that will keep them from being high in the draft and they will choose to stay another year to work on those holes.

Call it wishful thinking, but I really think they will all be back next year. To address the OP: Yes, I think we will be very strong next year. If Carson comes in and adds a spark we could be in for a great run.

I think a lot will depend on Isaac Haas, & our PG/guard play next season. Haas will get a lot more minutes, [& he's big & heavy] & will have to step up his production in several areas [mainly, minutes per game]. I think the best move I've seen in years was last season, when Coach Painter would start either Haas or AJ, then when one would get a foul, substitute that player out, for the other player in. I really think that helped Haas & AJH in many ways, as well as our team's success. I hope coach does the same substitution plan this season. I think we make the NCAA tourney next season, but it won't be anything like this season. Davis's leadership will be greatly missed, on & off court.

Haas is probably the 4th best NBA prospect on our team. I doubt he leaves. Biggie doesn't seem as dominant the last two games. I still think he will be great, but two years great. Edwards I feel wants a title. He will stay unless he has an amazing year AND the Boilers do very well in the tourney.

A starting lineup of upperclassmen PJ, Dakota, Kendall, Vince and Isaac can get a top 4 finish in the B1G. Carsen, Jacquil, and Cline will be the first off the bench.

If Swanigan stays, we'll be challenging for the B1G crown again.

EDIT Basil will be first off the bench.
