I thought we were disrespected in the rankings, but unfortunately we should probably be ranked 20-25. I don’t think we have a lot of upside.
Oh, I don't think this game was won by Tennesse..even though they played really hard. I think Purdue gave it away with horrible offensive decisions. You play smart and have a 12-15 point lead with 13 minutes to go...you can have a few shots roll out. However, Purdue was tied at half...and there is no way that "should" have happened...I thought we were disrespected in the rankings, but unfortunately we should probably be ranked 20-25. I don’t think we have a lot of upside.
I think Matt is a very good coach...but there were a "few" illegal screens that "forced" a switch and posed a problem for Purdue down low...and Williams just muscled his way inside for two foot shots. Wonder if he would have been playing had Purdue played smarter inside the first half and he picked up some fouls? Not sure why Taylor never hit the court at all and not sure why Matt didn't test his two bigs together to match a bit more smash mouth...TJ has it right. I would not read too much into this game one way or the other, anymore than I would have declared us FF material after the first 3 games. Let's not get carried away with self-immolation here.
There are a, lot of things I don't know. The one thing I do know is this game can change a season - or not. Live and learn and change - or not. We'll know more in March.I think Matt is a very good coach...but there were a "few" illegal screens that "forced" a switch and posed a problem for Purdue down low...and Williams just muscled his way inside for two foot shots. True...I don't know and would know more if I could actually see them in practice. There is plenty of time for Purdue to get it together, but if the refs let a smash mouth game happen...Purdue is going to have to get tougher inside or much more effective EVERY time down the court. I was spitting nails the last few minutes of the first half...There are a, lot of things I don't know. The one thing I do know is this game can change a season - or not. The stars (the Edwards boys) shot 8-30 (that's 27% for the humanities majors). And our 7'3" center got 3 rebounds. This team is not this bad, nor are they bound for the Final Four - at least at this point. It is is not a good sign that they played this poorly after playing together all summer.
It is all about offense adn scoring in preventing all D on the perimeter, but allowing mugging inside. Twice Purdue players had people falling on them. The refs were bad...but Purdue gave this one awayWhen he did get a rebound they called a foul.
Seriously. The rules are making the big man extinct. Guys like Haas are getting punished for being big.
It has tarnished the game. If they want NCAA to be an extension of AAU or And1 they are being successful.
This may be true ... but I have to say that having Haas and Haarms does not make me think we are a dominant team. Not a knock on them specifically, but as someone else said a few weeks ago, many rebounds do not land in a big and slow man's circle of reach (there was a much better term that I forget). tall does not equal rebounds, tall does not equal blocks, and tall does not equal easy dunks. How many balls were knocked from Haas's hands as he brought them up for a shot? When he did get a rebound they called a foul.

you are correct long rebounds will not be in Haas or Haarms hands most the time. however, I would rather lose long rebounds than give up two foot open shots on the inside over smaller, weaker, less athletic players...when we need the D. There has to be a reason why Taylor never hit the court any. Also, when you are shirting Wheeler, shasha and not playing Ewing adn Taylor doesn't hit the court...you needs a few more options inside...whether it is scoring or defendingThis may be true ... but I have to say that having Haas and Haarms does not make me think we are a dominant team. agreed .... we had defined limits to what we could do. it's early. our young 'uns are athletic ... I admit, this game hurt me more than most ... I try to be a coach and see the benefits of every game in the early season. But this one hurt. I hope it hurt our guys.... our seniors ... this is it for them ... if it did, then good.you are correct long rebounds will not be in Haas or Haarms hands most the time. however, I would rather lose long rebounds than give up two foot open shots on the inside over smaller, weaker, less athletic players...when we need the D. Totally agreed ... but ... it does not NEED to define our season .. it may, if so,, damn it. But it does not HAVE to define it. Getting a 4+ seed, yes, this was our opp. Must we fight our way back, yes. But we can do that ... we'll know more in March.to the original post. and other comments made today. I totally understand the negativity.
We have seen this same thing happen all to many times, and yes, it will most likely happen again. We put ourselves in a tournament and we choke against a good but less talented team. the game is close, but we go into some type of prevent mode, and the other team always makes that shot against us. and we never foul to prevent them from taking that shot. We jut hope they miss and they never do. if yo u foul the m before the y take the shot, that's only 2 points. Why oh why does this team never foul to prevent the shot? that has to be a coaching philosophy, and if so, it will never change.
as for our ranking, you can forget about being ranked in the top 10 anytime this year. We may still beat Louisville or Butler or Notre Dame or MSU, but to be in the top 10, you have to beat teams in the top ten. And by losing today, we lost our opportunity to play Nova or Zona, so we will be unable to claim victories over any top 10 ten teams. And beating top 10 teams outside of conference carries a lot more weight than beating conference opponents. Duke beating MSU carried a lot more weight than the outcome of their UNC game would. the same with Purdue against Nova or Zona compared with Big 10 conference games.
We may win a couple more games at Atlantis, but next week, look for our ranking to drop into the 20's. and beating Butler or Louisville isn't going to raise it very much if at all.
We showed today to all the sceptics , we are who they thought we were. When the going gets tough in a close game, we find a way to get a quality loss. instead of an ugly win.
I'm tired of people saying it's early. it was early for tenn too, and the y found a way to win. Going into this season, we had more experience thanks to the WUG than any other college team. This wasn't our third game. it was close to our 12th. And we didn't play 5 freshmen. These players have many other games just like this one. and unfortunately, the results were the same.
and I'm sick and tired of posters blaming the refs for missed calls or the wrong calls as if blaming them for our mistakes. Purdue fans have been blaming the refs for bad calls for over 50 years. yes, the refs blew a lot of calls, . but this game was no different than any other game. We never get the calls, so I don't and can't believe why you would believe this game would be an y different!
We are EXACTLY who they thought we were.
I recall many MSU teams that took lumps early in the season, only to come on strong in March. Each game is it's own throw of the dice. Let's nice get too predictive of disaster at this point.Totally agreed ... but ... it does not NEED to define our season .. it may, if so,, damn it. But it does not HAVE to define it. That’s what a childish baby would do.Meaningless tournament. Should just get on a plane home now.

I'm not sure "choking" it the word I would use, but perhaps it was? I think of choking as falling to the pressure and physically not performing due to your mental state of mind on things you normally do. This game had three basic problem areas: 1) not playing smart on O and valuing every possession. This led to a tie at half, when Purdue should have went in 12-15 up. 2) getting physically man handled inside on the boards 3)not stopping two foot shots inside. "IF" Purdue does any one of the three with any semblance of competency, Purdue wins. Instead, Purdue loses on all three. 2 and 3 go together for "many" scores. Those two are part physical and part mental...physical in athletic abilities with length...mental in allowing your offensive player perhaps too much freedom away from the ball to get in better rebounding position..and maybe with three refs this is much harder to do today? The one problem that was COMPLETELY under the control of Purdue was playng smart and making good decisions and so Purdue has one are that can be improved for certain. #2 and #3 can be improved by maybe playing more physical away from the ball, but again with three refs watching sections of the court...that is much more difficult today. The other is to make choices in developing different styles of play when conditions like today exist...physical, athletic opposition and your skillful team has some struggles on O AND D.to the original post. and other comments made today.
