Minn has an easy non-conference schedule, and he has put forth a winning record. has his team ever made the top 10 or top 20? other teams hire coaches that are not big names . And some of those coaches do fine. Fleck and brohm were both about the same level before they were hired, and their results were similar.

I just wish Purdue would not be included with all these other teams that hire no name coaches. I just wish Purdue would be attractive enough for a big name coach to want to come here and coach.

akers was a big name coach although he was on the downward part of his career. but looking back 100 years, has pudue ever hired any big name football coach? I'm not saying Walters is going to be a bad coach. But look at our last 4 hires. None of them were big name coaches before they were hired at Purdue.

i just wish a guy like Harbaugh or Meyers would say, I want to build a dynasty at Purdue. that's what happened at Clemson, Nebraska, Texas A&M, and LSU. I just would like Purdue to become an actual power that would attract big name coaches. the reality is if harbaugh actually left Michigan, I doubt his replacement would be an up and coming defensive coordintor from Illinois.

I hate to break it to you but Purdue is not LSU. A&M and Nebraska haven’t had any sort of relevant success recently. And Dabo was never a big name coach. He was a WR coach prior to becoming Clemson’s head coach.

I know Purdue is not an LSU or Clemson or Auburn or Florida or MSU. But I have to ask, why not? What do they have that Purdue doesn’t?

What makes those teams so much better than Purdue? Why can’t Purdue become a consistent top 20 team? Why can’t Purdue become a consistent 8-9 win team?

Why can’t Purdue be more like Penn st or UW ? What is it about Purdue that keeps holding them back? Why can’t we become a consistent great team? Why can’t we become a place great athletes want to come to?

Why can’t Purdue become a destination? And attractive place to come to ? Why can’t we be the chosen school rather than just in someone’s top 5?

You're so misunderstood...

1) Dabo Swinney was an assistant coach (wide receivers) at Clemson before he became head coach.

2) Tom Osborne joined Nebraska in 1962 as an unpaid assistant coach and became head coach in 1972. He's what made Nebraska into Nebraska...

3) Texas A&M hasn't won a national title since 1939. They've won their conference 3 times since then. There couldn't be a less relevant team that you quote as an "actual power"

4) LSU is the ONLY team on your list that makes any sense at all. And I hope to God you realize that their success is based on their ability, as the only real football program in Louisiana with unbelievable high school talent, to recruit their own state with very little interference from any other program.

As for the other schools, I’m just thinking about schools being consistent top 25 schools rather than winning championships or who their coaches are. Has Penn st won a big 10 championship ? I’m not sure. But they are a consistent top 20 team. That’s what I’d like Purdue football to be. Purdue’s basketball team is always a top 20 team. It would be nice to see Purdue’s football team enjoy the same success and consistency.

I know. I decided to stay 5 years and graduate in 79. I was born and raised in Wisconsin. Their school is on par with Purdue both academically and in athletic spending. UW was once a laughing stock in football and basketball. Even UW Green Bay had a better basketball team. UW made changes! They didn’t spend more than Purdue. And they still don’t. But they made the final 4 in basketball and their football team became a consistent top 10 team.

As I look at the success story UW has become, I ask why can’t Purdue enjoy that same success and story? It’s really not about spending more money. Rather it’s about making the right decisions!

I don’t want or expect Purdue to become OSU. But I ask why can’t we become like UW.

What I’m trying to do is provide many different examples in hopes that you will see and understand what I see.

Purdue will never be a great football powerhouse! We all know that. Some of you have hopes and dreams. I don’t. Rather, I ask questions nobody can answer and many don’t want answered. I ask why can’t Purdue be more like UW and Iowa? Their financial resources are the same. The caliber of their recruits are the same. Their facilities are the same. Their fans are the same. But their success is nowhere close.

In general, as a player I would want to represent my state, and that may mean going to a public school with that state's name in it. For recognition you otherwise have to be known for something. With Purdue the time of the first astronauts and moon missions have long passed. I think in the Big10 being called Purdue, Northwestern or Rutgers has a negative effect on your program. With Purdue's excellent basketball team this year there is a lot of excellent exposure which should carry over to football giving more name recognition to attract more players.

Outside of sports, I now see little Purdue University news which might excite me enough to attend. Unfortunately, Purdue Pharma news must negatively affect the name Purdue when it's not even associated with Purdue.

I understand and agree with the gist of the message. Many schools with less to offer than Purdue consistently do better. Fair question to ask and discuss is why. I contend it is mostly marketing and some of that is part of the HCs' job. Short of a early "let's play football" moment Brohm was a lousy interview and didn't do much to hype the school. Hell his family didn't even want to live here. Painter not only talks X's and O's but is sometimes quotable and funny. He constantly references Purdue history and being proud to be part of it. Geralds seems to be energetic and out there as well. Shondell is the best in my mind. He supports all the teams and is a great spokesperson for the University. What I fail to see is a orchestrated message/campaign from the athletic department. So far Walters has been enthusiastic in interviews and seems to be excited to be at Purdue and raise his family in W. Lafayette. I am optimistic his energy will be contagious.

Good point about "first astronauts and moon missions". Maybe not a coincident that Purdue's best football teams ever coincided with that particular time period. Basketball teams were great too.
