When they get going, they get going. Would be a tough match-up on the perimeter....they love to run and are super athletic. But they definitely live/die by the 3.

i was hoping for a nevada upset but they have nothing. they were lucky that isu stunk to start the game. nevada has no inside game and horrible shooters and no ball handling ability.

I'm worried about our perimeter defense. Not sure who we play to counter their athleticism. I'm thinking PJ and CE with DM swinging to the 2 when needed is our best bet.

It's going too be a road game too if your fans do not show up. They are going to hurt you badly athletically. Your only shot is to hurt them inside (Biggie & Haas) and hope they are cold from 3. Make Morris go to his left too. His preferred drive is initiated going right.

They are one cocky outfit too. All I want to see this entire tourney is for you guys to knock them out. Go Boilers!

Iowa beat em. By 14

We did. They are mega cocky and were talking in the media about how they were going to blow us out and rub our faces in it. They had something special planned for us.

We came out and surprised them. Put our best athletic guard in Moss on Morris and forced him left. He had a tough night. Got out on there shooters and hurt them inside.

Burton vs Biggie would be something to see. I think the refs would let them play.

I'd love to see Swanigan dominate a game. Swanigan had his stats tonight, particularly rebounds, but I'd love to see him have a real efficient, banger 25 point game. He was bigger than every player on Vermont - and 3 of his 11 shots were 3s and he shot under 50%.

He's not playing bad, but he's not playing like an All-American really. He's a beast on the boards, but he hasn't been very efficient offensively, at least above average - which I'd imagine an All-American should be.

He'll have an opportunity against Iowa State - Iowa State isn't big, but it won't be a weird/awkward matchup like Vermont.

We can definitely beat them, but they have a lot of things in their favor. Should be a fun game to watch. Hopefully.

All of eastern Iowa will be rooting for you.

This is the last year for a while you'll hear of them in the NCAA tournament. All seniors but one one and nobody left in the state penetentuary to offer a pardon and a scholly.
Lots of future food servers, janitors and felons on this team.

It'll be a road game.

Purdue needs to keep the pace slower than ISU wants and limit their transition - and like you said, try to punish them inside. And hope they don't shoot lights out..

They are only shooting 38% from 3. I am worried about our weak spot - dribble penetration ! I think we will get torched playing man D ! They are the most athletic team we have seen all year. Biggie and Haas could be in foul trouble before halftime. If they are, . . we could get embarrassed.

Lets hope they get lazy in the 2nd half and Nevada lights it up from 3.

I think VE will be guarding him most of the game. I can't get a real feel for them. Nevada is playing so bad. ISU seems to turn the ball over a lot, much like us. If we can get them in foul trouble and impose our will, I think we will win.

I can't tell if Iowa State's offense is really good, or if Nevada's defense is just f'ing horrid.

Cyclones are athletic as hell but wow -- Nevada is brutal man just brutal. Nev has absolutely zero inside game and their defense is non-existent.

ISU.. i don't know.. but not overly impressed. Fast & athletic yet undisciplined; they look like a glorified AAU team--out for dunks & hotdogging.

That's what I worry about also. They either shoot the 3 or drive it to the rim. There is little mid-range in their game.

Like you I'd slow the pace to a crawl on these guys and run lots of clock. Get the ball inside late for good shots for biggie & Haas. Both of these guys need to play like men. ISU has little size so you need to make them pay. Boards are huge! Give them no second chances.

No offense but I'm not sold on Painter as a game coach. He does not have any variation in his system. It's man or nothing. With this ISU team you have to mix up man & zone. Throw in some 3 quarters court press just to slow down there ball movement. Give them different looks to confuse and delay their offense. The want to go fast and want easy looks. Drive and kick.

I'm now hoping Nevada is just playing so poorly that Iowa State thinks this is what they'll see against us. As with every other game we play, limit the open 3's and we will be okay. It's okay to give up a driving lay up every now and then as long as it's not an And 1. But giving up open 3's all game long will be our downfall.

We've been bad at giving open 3's all year....

This game is an exception, but they don't normally turn the ball over. They have fewest turnovers per game in the B12, and 7th fewest in the country. Their PG has the best assist/turnover ratio is NCAA history.

Iowa has made some good plays, but Nevada's defense in 1st half was awful. I think we will clamp down on them. Should be a good game.

Purdue has to dominate the boards.

Announcers said Iowa State out-rebounded just two B12 teams and was only even on the glass in the conference tournament.

Purdue just needs to stop this timidness. This slow lethargic nonsense lolly passing like it's a pick up game against fat kids at the gym court at the YMCA. They better bring A game and put it all on the line for war on Saturday. Nobody said it was going to be easy. If they want to get a first final four since Russia was killing people climbing over the Berlin Wall then they better set their mind to it now and slap faces on Saturday because they ain't winning that game going out there like they did tonight. Haas better start swinging. Those easy layups that worst kid in gym class can make better get made on saturday. No excuse for not knocking those down when you are 7ft2. I am talking Purdue better play with authority that's how you beat a team like that. Can't let them go on long runs.

Rebounds can be misleading. Teams who get lots of offensive rebounds may miss lots of shots. Those who get very few offensive boards or defensive boards can also be high in creating turnovers. It's very game dependent. Limiting second chance points is far more important to me than winning the rebound margin

Plus, it looks like Iowa State shoots a lot of 3s, which means long rebounds. That sometimes negates Purdue's size advantage near the basket.

Yes - at halftime, we were up 1 and our offensive stats were better than Vermont's, but it was pretty simple - they had more shot attempts. The culprit in the first half tonight was turnovers (they had 0 or 1 at halftime and we had like 8).

Obviously when you're facing a three point shooting team, limiting attempts is helpful. I don't see us winning if they end up with more shot attempts, even if we out rebound them like you said.

First thoughts.

Monte Morris = Melo Trimble.

Great guard, and annoying matchup. But I feel as if we have already played similar teams to ISU. I am not worrying. Our boys will be ready.

Hopefully there will be some more posts from Hawkeyes fans pointing out how easily beatable Iowa State is while they prep for their NIT matchup with TCU (and yes, I had to look that up). Granted, Iowa DID beat ISU buttttttt, its all about when teams are playing well.

Fwiw, this matchup isn't good for the Cyclones IF Purdue pounds the ball inside and is able to defend the perimeter. That's basically the game Imo.

To Hawk fans, sorry for bagging as I know you have a young team and honestly believe you will be making some NCAA tournament runs in the near future, but, seeing you post on a board unrelated to your team or game is somewhat laughable. I mean, Iowa state is the "little brother" after all, right?:).
