What are you doing come Saturday regarding the MSU game...I for one will be watching live to see if our QB continues to play well in his 2nd game!

Sadly, I'm going to do something else most likely.

I used to watch even when we were heavy underdogs because there always was a glimmer of hope... not so much anymore.

So I'm not going to waste my day watching and just check the score now and then.

People on this board love to play the schizo expectations game. "We're not going to win the rest of the season!" Then when we do, it's like the second coming.

Quite frankly, Michigan State is a solid football team, but they haven't "wowed" me yet.

The most points Michigan State has put up this season is 37 (Western Michigan). They scored 35 against Air Force and 30 against Central Michigan.

Defensively, what they have built a great reputation on, they haven't held one of those teams to single digits (Air Force, Central Michigan and Western Michigan). Two of those three they actually gave up 20+ points. They beat Western Michigan by 13 and Air Force by 14. Their largest margin of victory has been 20 points vs. Central Michigan - and they were only up 17-10 going into the fourth quarter.

Conversely we haven't played anybody of the caliber of M$U yet and we're 1-3 with our lone win coming against a FCS school not among the FCS elite. We're in for a very long day. The best I would hope for is to remain relatively injury free and not be embarrassed to the point that the carry over runs through the team for the rest of the year.

i will be going deer hunting Saturday morning and if I get back in time I will watch the game, but if it gets out of hand I will do something else.

They haven't" wowed" you because if you look at MSU over the years, they never look like world beaters in their non-conf part of their schedule. CMU and WMU being in state colleges usually play them respectable. The way we are playing, we would struggle to beat either of those teams. I for one will at least tune into the first QTR to see if we come to play...................if it's a first qtr score of 14-0 then forget about it.............will tune into another game to watch. It is their HOMECOMING, so I expect to see MSU'S best and they will roll 41-14.

Watching.
What is the point of being a fan of a team if you only pay attention during the good times? It's entertainment after all, and sometimes it can be more entertaining when the team is not expected to do well. It's easier to be a fan when you realize that wins and losses shouldn't affect your personal mood or life. It's just entertainment for 3 hours on Saturday. I find it comical when people are so dramatic about poor performance/team being bad as if the coaches and players are intentionally trying to offend them personally by losing. It's funny someone would be taking the time to post on message boards throughout the week but then proclaim they won't watch the actual game because it's not worth watching.

I understand that. I'm certainly not promoting MSU as overrated or anything. But people saying 51-3 and stuff like that - when we happen to only lose by 14 they will say how great we look. People love playing the expectations game.

Last year, we played MSU "close" and everyone bragged about how we were improving and such - then we lost the rest of our games.

I wont be one of those touting how close we play them if that happens and we lose by 14.. a loss is a loss whether it is by one or 100. A close loss could also mean MSU took us for granted too and "over looked" us which is just as irrelevant because we still lost.

I'm not trying to be a defeatist, I'm really not... I'm just ready to change things and get back to winning and not being embarrassed on the football field.

DVR for sure. Saturday schedule permitting, I'll probably watch as much as I can unless/until it becomes too frustrating.

I certainly understand what you're saying, lbodel. There have been glimmers of hope in each of the past two seasons, but nothing's ever come of it.

I think that kind of talk has about run its course. We've seen all the "morale victories," all the "improving here" and "improving there," all the "hung tough" and "showed heart" that we can reasonably accept.

I'll certainly be encouraged if Purdue plays well in East Lansing, but I'm not jumping back on the Hazell bandwagon until I see the team turn the corner and win actual games against opponents that matter.

I get what you're saying... but you're right, that is sad. My wife is an IU grad and she gets excited for football games every weekend. Even this one, where the #1 team is going to roll into town, take over 1/3 of the stadium, and probably stomp a mudhole into her team. And she'll watch it until the bitter end.

IU has been to 1 freaking bowl in the last 25 years... and the game was over by halftime. For the past 5 years, their ticket sales, attendance, and fan support for football has been superior to Purdue's, and it's not like their football team's results over this same period are that much different. They've accomplished little more than Purdue has. But their fans are not nearly as fair weather.

I know some people are going take exception to this post because of the animosity generated anytime IU gets mentioned in any form of comparison. But everyone associated with Purdue should be embarrassed with the level of support right now. And that's not to say the fans are responsible for the state of affairs with the football program, so don't get me wrong. But I think we can all agree apathy is not going to be the best driver for expedient change.

Watching, unfortunately

Same here. Another depressing Saturday coming up where after the Purdue loss I have to decide which teams I'm going to root against the rest of the day...

I miss the days when I used to be excited to watch College GameDay and see what they had to say about the Purdue game... now all we can do is look for Purdue Pete in the commercials. ..

IU fans are as fairweather as Purdue's. For years the IU crowd in the stadium was dwarfed by the tailgating crowd in the stadium parking lot on the same day. Purdue fans have had a smattering of success in the past and know what it feels like to have success. What we have now in no way resembles a successful program. Being disgusted does not make the fans fairweather it makes them just what Purdue taught them to be when on campus. They are realists and in the case of Purdue FB right now reality sucks.

Watching as well, probably needing lots of Heiny to keep me from destroying another Fios remote.

I wouldn't say IU's fan base is real excited about their football program. I live in Indy and no one even talks about IU football because they suck. They suck every year its simple.
Purdue has a good fan base but we are getting tired of seeing them lose the past few seasons. They haven't given us anything to be excited about.

You can say what you want to about IU's football program and the excitement at being 4-0. They've earned that much this year. But when they lose tp OSU, some of the shimmer will be gone. And yet a good number of folks will still go to their games this year. Why? Because they have made IMPROVEMENTS and they have an exciting offense. Wouldn't Purdue fans be excited with those same things?

Two full seasons plus four games and we have been on the right side of the scoreboard 5 total times! Hard to get excited about that. Now if our scores were 45 - 42 and we lost on a hail mary at the end of the game, that's still exciting. Having your QB throw a pick-6 to effectively end the game is pretty anti-climatic. Heaven knows we've seen enough of that lately ...

We've had enough time to celebrate incremental improvements. We need to see results. So far, there have been none. Prevent defenses just before halftime ... penalties that kept opponents drives going ... you name a boneheaded play or a grave mistake and there's a decent chance Purdue has done it. I want to see a mentally strong team that understands situational football, a coaching staff that coaches our athletes "up", and a full four quarters of something that resembles a D1 football game. Not a cupcake game where our athletic department should be receiving a big fat check for being a sacrificial lamb.

I'll be watching the game due mostly to the inclement weather for the east coast on Saturday then hopefully will attend an Octoberfest event.

I certainly wouldn't say IU has a great football fan base. But they had 44,000 at their last game. Purdue had 33,000.

Winning makes a difference.

I will be watching, always do no matter what. It's been a terrible few years but Love Purdue football, always have, always will. Boiler Up!
Me too OhioBoiler3. I've been terribly disappointedand lost my bets, but I watch every game. I hope for the best on each and every weekend. The O-line has disappointed me so much. I love those BOILERS through it all!

DVR the game and go golfing. Return home in the evening and hear my wife say "don't bother watching the Purdue game". Will watch the whole damn beat down Saturday night while my wife tells me I am crazy (and she is a Bears fan!)

My wife is an IU grad too. She was with her sorority sisters last weekend and never even went to the game. There's no way their attendance surpasses ours

Watching. Why? Because I'm a Purdue fan and I love college football. To not watch seems illogical.
Your Spot on, I will be watching to see if there is any improvements made in the areas that need it. I'm a huge fan of CFB. Will have the remote ready to check out the other games, certainly with a Big beef and sausage combo with onions, a little beef jerky.....it's all Good!!!!Boiler Up

There are 3 reasons IUs attendance is higher than ours right now:

1). IU has demonstrated measurable improvement under their coach - all we have to hang our hat on is cliches and platitudes.

2) IU has an exciting offense - we do not.

3) IUs AD has marketed their football program well in Indy- we have not. (Though I'm sure Morgan has a good excuse for that, like he does everything else)

And another problem Burke has is this: most Purdue football fans are Purdue grads; and most Purdue grads are logical, analytical people. They do a cost/benefit analysis before making large purchase, and Purdue football season tickets analysis goes like this right now:

Costs:
Over $1000 cost in tickets and gas
7 Saturday afternoons

Benefits:
Tailgating
See the big drum

Burke has run off everyone but the hardest core of hard core, "illogical" fans, but they will come back when it makes sense to do so.

Exactly, it's the best time of the year.

On in the background while doing other things. I care, but can't give them my time. Glad I dropped tickets for first time since 1990.

I'll be on my way to the ND v Clemson game, possibly taking the boat to get there. But, will be listening to Boilers game on the way.
Ya never know. That's why they play the game!

I hope to God you are cheering like hell for Clemson. Screw the Irish, I think seeing them in person other than playing Purdue would make me sick.
