I have seen on several credible websites that Walters is being fired. That is great. It was the right call. He has the worst Purdue head coaching record ever for any Purdue coach over 1 year of coaching, including Hazell. Wish him the best in his future endeavors.

Ok, now what do we now? We obviously have to hire a head coach. Do we hire an established coach or an up and coming coach? We know that we need to hire someone with some head coaching experience for sure.

National signing day is Wednesday I believe. We obviously cannot tell any verbals or possible recruits who the coach will be. We don’t want to rush this search again like we did with Walters. There is a signing day in February, but the one in December is the big signing day anymore. That means that this year’s recruiting class will definitely not be a big contributor.

We are going to have to go with the transfer portal big time and a coach that can bring players with him. That means that we are going to have to loosen the purse strings for the NIL. Are we willing to do that? I hope we are now willing to make that commitment.

One thing for sure is this offseason is going to be active and interesting. Should give the board plenty to talk and debate.

I’d say you guys move quickly. Portal is a short window. I bet you know by Wednesday/thursday.

Second signing day is in February as you know. So there will be some players left over. What needs to happen is the AD needs to talk to the players. Tell them the cavalry is on it’s way

The next coach absolutely has to have head coaching experience. It would be a huge bonus if he can bring his current staff with him. That's one of the minor things that put Walters behind the 8-ball. He brought a couple of other assistants with him from Illinois, but how many could he possibly take? An actual head coach has more ability to do that. And a better opportunity to bring portal players with him.

Criteria:
HC exp, preferrabely from a big program. No more coordinators.
Has a staff in place that will come with him.
Strong recruiter.
Personality that will reenergize the fan base and donors.
Doesn't buy into the belief that Purdue can't compete with the top of the conference.

That’s high school. The early portal is open next Monday. Then spring one is ten days. I bet they are moving fast on this one.

My initial thoughts:

1. Whoever hired Walthers should not be in the decision-making process for the new HC. They have demonstrated that their rationale is naive.

2. The next HC needs to be a veteran coach with head coaching experience. In addition, he has to have a successful track record as HC.

3. NO MORE hiring of young assistants with no HC experience. On-the-job training DOES NOT WORK.

4. The National Signing Day in December will be a loss for us right now. (It will be loss for any team that is looking for a HC) We should look at HC candidates that will take advantage with the transfer portal. Who knows? Our next HC may be able to have a lot of his players (at his current job) transfer over to Purdue.

With you in all of this except I would add offensive minded. Doesn't necessarily mean he was an OC at one time. Also I would add we need a bona fide QB coach.

Strong list!

I would add to this a demonstrated ability over the course of at least four years of head coaching experience of strong recruiting, player development, and on field success.

And underlying character is obviously foundational.

Apologies in advance for this stomach-turning analogy, but we’ve just lanced and drained a massive, sharply painful, staph-filled carbuncle.

IMO at least a little recovery /healing time is in order!

Kevin Wilson and PU have been in touch. No joke. He has B1G HC experience, he wants to be a big time HC again, and PU would like to get back to a “basketball on grass” product AND he is affordable.

Why not? We can pay him and he can play in a real conference.
Just my 2 cents - worth a shot.
I thought the same while watching their game yesterday, but looked him up and he’s at his dream job - a hometown raised head coach. He isn’t leaving anytime soon

Need to look hard at Chuck Martin out of Miami of Ohio or Chris Creighton at Eastern Michigan. Both guys have turned around programs that were in a disastrous condition! Both are very familiar with Indiana Ohio and Michigan .

Really like martin

Lashlee would be GREAT, but he just signed an extension about a week ago. Doubtful we could pull any coach that's going to the CFP.
That is who would be my top candidate. He is offensive minded and has completely transformed that program, but I don’t see us ponying up the money, no pun intended. Plus, does someone like that want to start over from scratch.

I see us going more for the head coaches of Western Kentucky, Toledo or UNLV.

I am a definite No on Kevin Wilson.

Chuck Martin at Miami of Ohio might get a look as well.

Agreed 100%. I'm just not really confident in Bobo & Co to land a great hire, but we'll see. Silverfield and Monken would be solid if they can sell them on Purdue. Memphis was really impressive the other night vs. Tulane. Monken could instill some grit and discipline that would be a refreshing change.
