Wahlberg to portal

I would think so. Honestly thought we needed another one before Wahlberg left.

I do wonder if this was a situation where the coaching staff forced him out. Just seems odd to transfer when you're in line for a starting spot on a big ten team (with limited previous experience), but who knows.

Wonder if Jenkins would be a candidate. He may be too big now.
Yanni already made the switch to mlb and it sounds like he's made big strides this offseason. Hopefully his progress has pushed Jakey jake out. I think Washington is the other one looking at big minutes, gotta look at what's left of the depth chart again

Probably.. if you look at Illinois defense last year, they had two guys in the middle.. one guy who came in at 6’1” 230, left at the same size and had NFL mobility.and another guy who came in at 6’1” 215 as a 4-3 outside linebacker and eventually got up to 230.

Apparently someone from Wahlbergs family went on the other site and said that there is no middle linebacker in this defense. It’s essentially a 5-1-5. So.. the DEs, OLBs and NT are the 5.. the 1 is more like a 4-3 outside linebacker and playing next to him is a big safety.

So… if you were thinking of good players we have had under brohm who would fit those 3-4 inside linebacker positions in this defense.. it wouldn’t be middle linebackers at all. More like Jalen Alexander and Jalen Graham.

So.. maybe Clyde Washington, who was an outside LB last year and OC brothers at the other spot. A lot of people said that if brohm had stayed and Graham had left, it might have been brothers at that spot.

Wahlberg was likely told his position just isn’t a thing in this defense. Maybe if they need a MLB they use yanni. Yanni at this point hasn’t done enough to be more than a situation LB

Fairly accurate assessment BC...............There is NO mike LB in this defense. OC will play the "cylinder" partnered with a SS up close and Clyde will play the Will who is manned up on the weak/boundary TE. Both of them will do a great job! OC and CLYDE are physical athletic hard working guys. I would play them any day on my team!

You seem to have a lot of knowledge of this defense. Is the cylinder the player everything is funneled to? Or is that the will

Good question.......there are only 2 programs out of 123 FBS schools that I know of running a defense like this.................... NOT common. LB's are not the high impact guys in this defense like the vast majority of D's out there. I would feel the SS is the greatest impact guy. This is a more "contain" style versus a "spill" style. No Mike and No SAM LBs. Most people on this site and the other one have NO FRICKEN clue what they are talking about!!!!! Cylinder is more of a multi role athletic twitchy player NOT an inside thumper like most fronts want out of a MIKE............... why Jacob left looking for a defense who appreciates his strengths! Holt brought him in to run the box from tackle to tackle downhill doing what he loves to do. 4 defenses later.......It's time to find a better defensive fit and go have fun. Not an easy or desired decision!

Us and Illinois?

Interesting to read his comments on leaving mentioning that our Air Strike defense is centered around the Defensive Backs and not the Linebackers!

Doesn’t surprise me. Seems about half of the official visits that have been here and yet to come are DBs.
