Since there's no volleyball specific board thought I'd mention it here. The 6th ranked Purdue ladies play at #7 o$u tonight at 8:00 on BTN and then come home for another tough match against #15 psu, at 2:00 on espn2. Hopefully they can get it done in both matches and the football Boilermakers follow it up with a win at Iowa. Boiler Up!

OSu is very good and won a hightly contested match at home. Purdue was missing one of our best players and another rotation player. The BT is loaded and we are one of them. All these teams will be in the NCAA and we'll see if our Boilers is the one or two that makes it to the FF with the usual West Coast powers. Tough to watch a loss, but it was great VB by both.

Despite having two starters out, the matches against tOSU were competitive. But Dave Shondell said after the game that he just didn't feel some of our players (pretty clearly our players who usually shine) played “well enough”.

He said you cannot expect to win against a team like tOSU at their place when you do not play your best. BTW, he never once mentioned that he was short two of his best players. Gotta love “no-excuses” Dave.

When are the missing starters expected back?

I don't know, David. Earlier in the week I thought Shondell indicated that middle Jael Johnson would probably be back (after missing all of last week) but she didn't even make the trip to Columbus.

Marissa Hornung, who alternates as libero/defensive specialist, made the trip and was standing with the team but did not play. A senior, I believe it is the first match she has not played in during her four years at Purdue. Shondell referred to how well her sister, freshman Ali Hornung, replaced her "on short notice".

Our VB team is always very quiet about the nature and extent of injuries. It's a little frustrating for fans.

Yes, they play it close to the vest in announcing injuries and specifics. I too thought Jael would be back this past week listening to Coach, one would think she’ll play in the up coming matches unless she had a setback.

Looks like M Hornung played some against PSU, and the whole team had to reach deep after the 3rd set to even the match and eventually win. Home court def helped as Jael still out and Grace Cleveland had a subpar afternoon.

But my gosh what a stud is Caitlyn Newton! Great team effort but Purdue doesn’t win that match without her. So glad to be able to watch on ESPN2.

As said previously, the B10 is loaded with top 20 teams. No room- ever - to relax.

Another huge weapon is freshman Raven Colvin. Powerful at the net.

Yes about Raven but Shondell made a point at his news conference Monday that she still has a lot to learn and she was schooled a few times by Penn State’s middle and front line. But for a frosh, she is amazing.

Did he mention anything on Johnson’s status?

2-1 Sparty as we go to set 4, MSU is playing a great match, Purdue is struggling with the block, they really miss Johnson, she’s their best in that aspect.

Hard to understand how MSU only won one B!G game before defeating us Wed. But we did not play well and we miss Jael and a full-strength M. Hornung more than Shondell is admitting.

This game depressed me, living in the middle of MSU country. Sigh.

Sparty’s schedule was brutal, they’re a good team that should start winning games in conference. Still a bad loss at home for Purdue.
