The only thing that separates the two is the all-important killer instinct

Anyone with a better memory than mine care to break down the game-winning abilities of both players in close games shown in their first two seasons?

National POY candidate? I like your optimism, but I don't think he's quite there. DV had a much quicker release on his jumper, much better first step, probably a slightly better defender, and of course the killer instinct. The one thing VE does better is understand the game a little better IMO and lets the game come to him. DV often forced his game instead of letting it come to him.

I think vince has all the tools. It's about how hard he works and how much fire he has. DV had the fire.

Edwards could be Valentine, but it's hard to see now. He would need to take a huge step forward this year. Definitely has the tools, we will see if Painter can help him get there and if Edwards is willing and able to do what it takes.

I know he needs to improve defensively, but offensively, do you guys believe VE can ever make significant improvement with his dribble? Or do you believe that's something that really coincides with his quickness (i.e. first step on an aggressive dribble) and overall speed with the ball? If he does, I would think that would make him as much of a "go-to-guy" as Swanigan (and CE down the road).

CMP will never let him play the way DV played .
i believe VE could absolutely take over games but has the same aversion to shooting most guys develop under painter

I think he would to a degree, it's just that we don't know if Vince can get his handles (particularly his dribble) to the type of level Valentine had last season.

I watched Vince a lot in high school as he played in my school district's conference. Your comment about shooting aversion being attributed to Painter is comical. He has always been an unselfish player and plays extremely well in the offense. Purdue's #1 offensive option last year was A guy who ranked among the B1G leaders in shooting efficiency and Vince was right to defer to the current NBA player.
