I would take Nova and give the 2. I think their team speed is going to be too much for us. Caleb and Isaac should have their way inside but that will be offset by penetration and 3's from their guards/forwards. I will be very happy to be wrong!

2 is practically insignificant and college basketball is a game of guards. Nova has some of the top guards in the country. If I'm putting money on this game I have to go with Villanova. Like you I'd love to be proven wrong.

Too much guard and wing talent on Nova. Our advantage is size, but they will rebound and defend by swarming and quickness. One thing to keep an eye on is the physicality and whether the refs let the big players play with the same level as the smaller ones. At home that usually works in our favor, but I think in the end is only enough to keep this one close.

If I'm a betting man, I'd take Nova. My heart pulls for the Boilers.

This game comes down to our backcourt. We can't turn it over and we need to defend them well enough (you can't stop Nova guards, you can only hope to contain them).

Nova will dictate tempo through their pressure D. I anticipate full court to 3/4 court pressure, even if it is just simple ball pressure from whomever is guarding the ball. The more time it takes our guards to get it across halfcourt and into our offense, the less time we have to get the ball where we like it and it neutralizes our bigs. So, we won't have the opportunity to be as patient on offense as we would like because good opportunities will be harder to come by. We need to be disciplined - limit turnovers, be aggressive and take good shots when the opportunity arises.

Even if we lose, I think we need to be competitive. We obviously want to win, but if we are close, it is a good benchmark for the guards and team down the road of a long season. A good visualization of how we need to perform to beat a really, really good team.

No one gives a shit about guard and wing play. I don't think they can live by the three against this Purdue team (Die by the three). We have the athleticism to play solid defense and they have no way to play 4 qtrs against our bigs. Just feed the ball down low and force them into foul trouble early. Play tough defense on the wings and slow down any drives to the paint. Do that and Purdue wins by 10+.

I would tend to agree with this. Elite guard play almost always trumps a frontcourt advantage in college basketball. They have too many with the ability to create, and that could definitely lead to our bigs getting in foul trouble. If we get into foul trouble early, Nova wins by double digits. If we can stay out of early foul trouble, I still think they win in the end with the ability to both get to the basket (where we will really miss AJH) and hit 3's, but it would likely be a close game.

No shot blockers down low, not a good recipe. This one has the possibility to get out of hand. Totally agree with this

Hope I'm wrong

I won't be surprised either way, but I like Purdue at home in this one.

It's possible that this one will get away and Purdue will lose by double digits, but I really expect Purdue's guard play to be a lot more steady this year, so I don't think that will happen.

I will amend this by saying that if Nova hits over 50% from 3, it could get ugly.

If Biggie and Haas play most the game I like Purdue. That would mean the game wasn't going up and down and perhaps the ref never did the ususal whistle test at the start of the year. I have to think Purdue is focused and ready. If Purdue is not cold and the refs do not create a game of horse, but still call hacking...I like Purdue. If digging at the ball is not called and perimeter dribbling gets fouls called...Villanova advantage. Two contrasting teams...how do refs interpret the visual of the game. REALLY worried about losing Taylor...I just do not see the depth I thought Purdue would have. I think TAylor's loss is huge for Purdue. Purdue has small guards and are very thin inside now. Solid team with lots of pieces but now has an Achilles Heel I wasn't worried about a few weeks ago...

crush these fools. Haas shouldn't miss a shot against these midgets. They pose no more danger to him than the worlds largest cockroach. BTFU! Win or black out on Makers Mark!

Could Jay Wright pass for George Clooneys brother?

Could come down to how ready Basil is to play tonight. He could be solid relief off the bench since Nova isn't very tall... and he is very athletic so he might be better suited to keep up with them if we need to go a bit smaller/faster or if Haas gets into foul trouble.

In no situation is Villanova preparing to play w/ the Boilers for 4 Quarters...they don't have to. The game will be played in 2 halves.

You take good guards over bigs everyday of the week + Sundays.

If the game is in the 60s to low 70s = advantage Purdue. If it is in mid 70s to 80s, edge to Villanova.

Gut tells me Villanova by 10. Purdue's lack of depth will be an issue.

No way I'd bet this game. Mackey is a tough place to play & we are just as loaded as the Cats this year. If this team learned over the off season how to protect a lead, I like our chances.

ummmm hahah mackey a tough place to play??

At least you don't try to act like you're not a troll. On a side note, you wouldn't know how difficult Mackey or any gym is to play in, my guess is that you were cut from your grade school JV basketball team. Grew up a trailor park IU fan and now reside in the back end of your mom's double-wide (plenty of pun intended) posting about Purdue to make yourself feel better.

Because of the contrast in styles, as well as approach, it easily could go either way...which would hopefully bring playing at home into the equation as a difference and plus...but, Villanova is experienced, well-coached, and rock solid in the backcourt (and backcourt generally trumps size or front courts in college basketball).

Purdue has some solid guards, at least within their system and what they do...but they are totally different for the most part from what Villanova has. Purdue's guards are going to be challenged at the defensive end, and outside of Carsen, that is not an issue that Villanova will have.

Purdue certainly has the size advantage and will try to use that and play through their bigs, but Haas is not the force at either end that Hammons was and this is a game in which he could be exposed at either end...Swanigan will have to play like he did the other night, a game in which he was exceptional...played under control...did not force things...and stayed inside the arc.

I am still not sure what to think of this Purdue team...there are definitely things to like about it, but, there are definitely some questions...I don't know that they have enough this early in the season to get a win tonight...I would love for it to happen and I think it would really be good for them, but, they absolutely have a daunting challenge and their work cut out for them.

Purdue has a really good chance to get a top 5 win over a good Villanova squad. The strengths/weaknesses are obvious on both sides. Purdue will have to break pressure and play through the post (high/low with Caleb and Isaac). Nova will attempt to get up into Purdue's guards and force inaccurate passes to the post. If Purdue's guards compete with Nova guards I like Purdue in this one as Nova doesn't have much in the middle. It will be interesting how the game is officiated with such strength on weakness from both teams. As teams are getting chemistry, plays, and defenses ironed out so are officiating crews.

The college basketball season is already off to a great start with the games played our in Honolulu in front of the troops. I don't think Nova has an answer for Swanigan at the four or five. He has a big game and leads Purdue to a 2 point win over Nova in what is a great game. Carsen will struggle early with the pressure but by the second half he'll be hitting shots and keeping his man in front of him.

Edit: Best of luck Purdue! I know that arena will be rocking, hopefully it's enough to pull off the (slight) upset.

oh and in case you didn't know, I can barely form thoughts in my brain, and sentences on my keyboard.

can't wait for my welfare check tonight though... i see purdue is a school well beyond what I'm capable of.... hahah yeah but thats a tough place to graduate from alright ....

Fixed.

hahaha damn i didnt realize my comments were getting to east coast boiler so much

its ok bub, if you cant handle me maybe take a break from the boards

its ddamn nice being the best team in the country though... and on top of that to complete hammer the 2nd best team makes a pretty big statement... sorry that ruffles your feathers boys ... i just tell it like it is

Agree with the 1sr part. Mackey is one of best when the fans get going. Hopefully get off to a good start so the crowd stays in it.

However, disagree with the statement that we are as loaded as the Cats. Nova starts 3 Seniors and a Junior from last year's NCAA championship team. I can't see where we are just as loaded. Our front line has potential to be good if not great, but Isaac hasn't started much and Caleb still has to prove he can excel against quality teams.. Plus backcourt is heavily in Nova's favor. I think we are a step below Nova on experience and talent. But, we can make up for it by playing hard and having the crowd on our side. Should be a good one.

ok seriously, you guys aren't just "not as loaded as the cats"

you just aren't loaded.

loaded means you a talented roster. You don't. Your roster is total garbage. Direct me to your good players. Edwards - mediocre.
Swanigan - mediocre

rest of roster - SCRUBS

hahaha damn i didnt realize my comments were exposing my idiocy for all to see.

its ddamn nice to sit on my ass all day and collect welfare though... and on top of that I have little else going on in life... sorry that I'm here wasting space guys ... i just tell it like it is

Fixed to reflect reality.
