It would damn near guarantee them a win. ND used Gary Godsey. A TE converted for 1 game only against Purdue vs Drew Brees and we lost. MSU Rocky Lombardi 1st game tears us apart. Another poster eluded to Joe Montana back in late 70’s. Too early for remembering details.

Are there any other rookie debut QB’s that beat us and was not expected?

Was a kid at the '77 ND game. Montana came in as the 3rd team qb that day. Rusty Lisch started. Devine pulled him for Gary Forystek. Fred Arrington for PU knocked him out of the game, then Montana entered. Think was late 3rd quarter. The rest is history.

Great memory. For some odd reason I think the QB was fielding a punt and never called the fair catch. I know that doesn't make sense for a QB, but remember him lying there wondering how bad he was hurt. Carried on a stretcher?

Pretty sure he was carried off on stretcher. It was a monster hit. Would have thought on a sack or qb run, but don't recall for sure.

I had already graduated and so maybe my memory is not as good, but really think it was as I recall...punt

Not a rookie, but a few years ago when Speight got injured for Michigan, in came John O'Korn to throw for 270 yards and a TD.

the play happened in front of me although I was up 40 rows in the stands. Their QB was running towards the right and cut to the left, but on the cut Arrington torpedoed him and there was a loud crack of plastic from the hit.

The reason first time players do well, and it happens to every team, is because defenses scout opposing starters for the week leading up to the game. If the player that is scouted gets injured, or has never played, the defense is ignorant to that player's tendencies. Yes, the other team still runs the same offense; however, often times the new QB has a quicker release, is more of a runner, is taller and can see over the line better, etc.. Same goes for running backs. The offense could go from a power back to a quicker back. The defense has to to make in-game adjustments and it could take a series or two before they figure it out. There are just so many variables in the game of football.

I hated when Speight got injured. We were playing so well and I thought he was a good match up for our defense. In comes O'Korn and the rest is history. I learned a long time ago to not hope for injuries/suspensions because of the unknown.

Just my .02

For whatever reason I though both QBs had been knocked out of the game, but still seem to recall the punt in front of on the west side up several rows as well. Could there have been 3 hard hits or one punt, one on a QB running and???

Googled both Joe Montana and Gary Forystek. Paraphrasing from Wikipedia on Montana... "Forystek broke a vertebrae, broke his clavicle and suffered a concussion. Ended his career. Lisch briefly came back into the game. Montana eventually came in down 10 with 11 minutes left in the game."

Also found an article from 2017 in the NWI Times by John Doherty, a long time trainer at Munster HS and Munster Community Hospital. Seems he was a student trainer at ND in '77 and on the ND sideline. Again paraphrasing, but basically said "the hardest hit he'd ever seen before or since. Thought he quite literally knocked his head off. An ambulance came on the field."

This happened to Kentucky last night. Felipe Franks, (Florida’s starting QB) dislocated his ankle on a fourth down play. Kentucky was up 11 at the time of the injury. In comes RS sophomore backup and he carved the up the until then stout UK defense like a pumpkin. Florida goes on to win. It felt so Purdue like that I could really relate to those fans watching in horror in Lexington.

(Reminder: my wife is a UK grad)

It would be so nice if Purdue had had this happen.
