At a White Sox game last week it hit me, we should have some sculpture around the stadium of notable players or coaches. Mollenkopf. Tiller. Brees. Griese. Similar to what other schools have done.
Great sculpture but hard to interact with as it is so large. Last time I walked campus I found some new art block P, fight song lyrics, etc. Put some by Mackey while at it. Like Wooden. Good startAgreed. The sculptures around both Guaranteed Rate and Wrigley Field add stature, class and provide a sense of history. Good places to meet up with friends or to take pics. Add Butkovich, Keyes ect.
Can someone tell me why the Hammer & Anvil sculpture was situated where it is now?? I can think of 2 or 3 other spots around Ross Ade where it could have been placed to maximize a more dramatic view
Respectfully disagree. I think statues of goons like Lou Holtz (they have one at ND) are tacky. Then you've got the Paterno statue at Penn State. At a White Sox game last week it hit me, we should have some sculpture around the stadium of notable players or coaches. Mollenkopf. Tiller. Brees. About the Wooden statue, we tried to get him to come home to Purdue to coach and he repeatedly refused. I say we dig up that statue and ship it to UCLA.
Wooden refused twice. Actually once. A winter storm interrupted some communication back in the day and the parties simply didn't get together. He also wanted to honor the final year of a multi year contract. At least it was something to that effect-I am too lazy to re-read his book on my bookshelf.Respectfully disagree. Sorry, your winter storm stories are mixed up. See link. Purdue repeatedly tried to get Wooden back to WL after he started winning at UCLA. He didn't refuse once or twice, he refused numerous times. His wife Nell didn't want to leave California for the midwest.Wooden refused twice. Actually once. South Endzone is a huge project. I see the hotel. Before the building, Football offices would have been cool.I still say that the best thing Purdue could do to spruce up R-A is add a hotel with balconies overlooking the field where the south endzone bleachers used to be. They could keep the terrace on ground level (hopefully add an antique steam locomotive and tender at some point) -- but build a 3-5 story hotel above it.
LOL and you hold that against him so much that you don't want his statue from his playing days here? You poor guySorry, your winter storm stories are mixed up. See link. He did manage to bring his UCLA team back to Indiana and set up an annual home-and-home with an Indiana school that went on to become a classic series for many years and it greatly benefitted the hoops programs of both schools. Unfortunately, the other school was Notre Dame.He did manage to bring his Alcindor led national champjon team in the midst of an 88 game win streak to be the Mackey Opener... just sayin'
I didn't say that, you poor guy. That is your distortion of my comments. I said ALL of these statues of sports "heroes" are tacky.LOL and you hold that against him so much that you don't want his statue from his playing days here? You poor guy
I don't want any statues of players or coaches on campus. Got it this time?About the Wooden statue, we tried to get him to come home to Purdue to coach and he repeatedly refused.
"""I say we dig up that statue and ship it to UCLA""" Found it
Who made you God?? and what the hell is wrong w/ a small tasteful bust of Griese or Brees. Sounds like you want Board of Trustees to take the Neil Armstrong statue off the Aeronautical Eng entrance too?I don't want any statues of players or athletes on campus. Got it this time?
Sounds like a terrible investment that would only be popular for 7 weekends a year.I still say that the best thing Purdue could do to spruce up R-A is add a hotel with balconies overlooking the field where the south endzone bleachers used to be. Respectivly disagree. I would make first reservation for 6-7 home FB games- 2-3 basketball weekends, spring fling, ect-Iike idea....its sure better than staying at levy Mariott, Hilton or Lafayette Holiday InnSounds like a terrible investment that would only be popular for 7 weekends a year.
Yeah, because everyone wants to stay at a hotel that looks out on an empty football field 358 days a year. That's cool.I still say that the best thing Purdue could do to spruce up R-A is add a hotel with balconies overlooking the field where the south endzone bleachers used to be. I'd take a hotel over that rinky-dink thing that's in the south end zone right now.On the flips side you would be looking out at a shot of the campus while you are staying there the remaining days! Pool and bar on the roof would bring in business in both cases.
Parking and highway access say no. After 30 years in the hotel business I'd give it a hard pass. I don't think you can make the numbers work.On the flips side you would be looking out at a shot of the campus while you are staying there the remaining days! Pool and bar on the roof would bring in business in both cases.
You forget that Purdue already owns and operates a hotel at the Memorial Union. Hotels that look on the Interstate have people traveling on the Interstate that need a place to sleep. Why drive onto campus for that?Is that really any worse than a hotel that looks out on an interstate? I mean, a lot of people visit campus over the course of a year.
I disagree regarding the current Boilermaker Statue. I personally think they made a great choice as it's very prominent coming up both ends of the street on the east side and has a very large presence on top of the hill looking from Mollenkopf west. I suppose each end of the stadium would have worked as well but have no issue with it's current location. They did a great job with that statue all the way around.Agreed. ld in a heartbeat and campus could add some nice pubs and restaurants around the stadiumYou forget that Purdue already owns and operates a hotel at the Memorial Union. Top of the eastside stadium stairs-looking south similar to the "Rocky Statue" at the top of stairs in front of Philly Museum of Art or at North entrance of Ross Ade or maybe close to Mackey on a pedestal along the circular plaza sidewalk. I think its a great work of art and inspirational. I just don't think its positioned where a lot of folks can see the front of it unless they come up from the side parking lot?I disagree regarding the current Boilermaker Statue.
