Obviously the 2 most talked about things for improvement over last year has been 3 point shooting and free throws.

However, Purdue had a turnover problem last year, even in Big Ten play, that has not been talked about as much.

Last year, in conference games only, Purdue was last in the Big Ten in turnovers per game with 13.4 per game. Purdue was 13th in turnover margin. And Purdue was 10th in assist/turnover ratio (and that says something because Purdue was #2 in assists).

This is an area that has to improve if we want to take advantage of our strengths. A rebounding edge means nothing if you cancel those extra possessions out with turnovers.

Last night, Purdue had 13 turnovers (Edwards, Mathias, Davis and Swanigan each had 2) - right on their average from last year. Granted, it's the first game of the season and I am not stressing out about it, but it's something to keep an eye on.

Per-game statistics are misleading. Look at the turnover rate per possession. Lots of possessions last night.

Still, lbodel's point is a good one. Protecting the ball is one of the most important keys for Purdue this season. If Purdue can cut its turnover rate to average in the conference, this is going to be a great season.
