He said today: "Crime is out of control, and rapidly getting worse. Look what is going on in Chicago and our inner cities. Not good!"

In short
-The assault weapons ban expiring did not cause an increase in violence as some would have one to believe either.
-As for knowing his base-he might be a better politician(not a compliment imo) than I thought. Obama does the same thing/did the same thing with Dallas in bringing up gun control.
-Trump, in early debates, brought up more than one time that we are a nation of laws and that they need to be followed-so that is not much of a surprise. That was the basis for anti-illegal immigration stance.

- there's no point to weapons ban if your state is adjacent to a state that allows weapons sale. It's a futile strategy.
- I do respect the views of significant segment of the population who feel they need to have firearms. But when you ask why are gun bans brought up after mass shootings. It's simply because there isn't any more effective way is to minimize casualties from random lone mass killers. If there is any better way, please point it out.
- Practically speaking, the type of gun ban necessary is not politically feasible and will be a logistical nightmare. So talking about it is just talking about it. It ain't happening. and random crazy mass killers will continue to kill people from time to time.

tripe. Of America’s three biggest cities, Chicago had the highest violent crime rate at 884.26 violent crimes per capita. New York City had a rate of 596.7 and Los Angeles had a rate of 490.71.
Detroit, Michigan 1988.63
Memphis, Tennessee 1740.51
Oakland, California 1685.39
St. Louis, Missouri 1678.73
Milwaukee, Wisconsin 1476.41
Baltimore, Maryland 1338.54
Cleveland, Ohio 1334.35
Stockton, California 1331.47
Indianapolis, Indiana 1254.66
Kansas City, Missouri 1251.45

The on line article you're quoting says violent crime is down. So, what "tripe" you talkin' 'bout, Willis?

Two things:

1. Not everyone has the same definition of violent crime. So BJS appears to have slightly different numbers from FBI. I'm guessing that's what that chart shows vice the FBI calculation. It could also be the difference in determining what "counts" as Chicago.

2. BOTH/ALL/EVERY measure shows that the trend of crime from mid-80s til now is almost uniformly down other than statistical blips.

I don't know anyone who said an assault weapons ban would decrease generic national violent crime statistics. I think the main point was to make it harder for someone who wants to commit a mass shooting, which has seen a rise...
