We will lose more home games than any year since 1983-84 when we lost 11 at home en route to a 5-23 record. Versyp has lost more home games (34) in 8 2/3's seasons Than four coaches lost in nineteen previous seasons when Purdue lost just 32 Mackey Arena contests.

In other words, from 1987-88 until 2006-07 Purdue lost .593 games a season at home and since Versyp arrived we have lost 3.8 home games a season. But wait, it gets worse. Since she has been playing solely with her recruits she has lost 25 games and counting in 5 2/3's seasons raising her average home losses per year with her players to 4.2 a year. The only time she had fewer than 3 losses was her first year with two seniors who were McDonald's All Americans. She lost two with Gerald's and Lawless.

In the nineteen seasons before her arrival we were unbeaten four times and lost one game five times. In 19 seasons only twice did we lose four home games. And only four times in nineteen years did we lose more than two in a season.

As I watched tonight's loss I wondered what Fever Coach White thought if her alma mater's program?

Des, you make a good point. I can't disagree. After watching last night's game, I can clearly see that this year's version of the Boilermakers is a team with almost no depth, no long range shooters, and no BIG-type height. I think you might consider that the BIG has become more competative, top-to-bottom in the recent years, which dilutes your point. However, your basic concern is still valid.

I knew there would be a drop off in performance when we lost KK and C-Mo to graduation. I had hoped that one of the underclassmen guards would step into those shoes, but none has. We need that deadly 3-pt shooter to open the middle up. As long as I have watched Purdue women's basketball, we have been a team with long range shooters, and at least one really good Power forward. Where did they go? Why haven't we recruioted better?

The recruiting failrure that this represents seems oddly similar to those same type of failures in the major men's sports. Is it more than a coinsidence that all three sports should take a similar dip at the same time? Men's basketball has seen the bottom and is now on the way up with better recruiting. Next year's women's class is also nationally recognised to be a very good class. How odd that both sports should recover at roughly the same time? IMHO, football by its nature, will take longer to come back up.

From what I can see, the problem is deeper than just the coach. Versyp might be a very good coach in a bad situation. I can't find the boundry between her contribuution to this problem and what the Purdue administration has done to hamper sports.

You do realize Purdue's schedule used to include regular season games with the likes of Texas, Stanford, Tennessee, LaTech, Vanderbilt, UConn,,Notre Dame and other national powerhouses? You also realize the Big Ten was a more significant national player in many of those years either strong programs at OSU and Iowa to name just a few. A Big Ten FF appears nice in the '90's was not an oddity.

Yes, you are right. I was thinking that the BIG conference has become more competative top-to-bottom. There was always a PSU or OSU that we had to fight through. Now there are a larger number of contenders. Maybe is it that we have fallen back into a middle of the pack team, so we have more of a challenge to beat these other teams.

That said, you are right on target about our preseason. We have always scheduled tougher teams to play against, so the over all year-to-year comparision is certainly valid.

It is hard to determine the boundary in terms of what the athletic dept. has done or not done to negatively impact the major sports and how much of the downturn falls on the individual coaches. It is pretty clear to me that Burke waited way too long to renovate Mackey. Now that the changes are in place, recruiting has picked up for both programs.

Versyp is not getting done - plain an simple. This program has fallen off by a standard deviation at least and there is no reason to tolerate that. Burke got so excited about hiring Purdue alumni - that has not worked out very well for the major sports.

Versyp gets a chance to do something with her strong incoming class next year. If she struggles, it is time for someone new.
