First of all, let me welcome you to the board. I am sure most posters here share my sentiments and appreciate the valuable insights you give on our team.
I haven't been a fan as long as some of the posters here, but I think this season has the pieces to be comparable to the two best Purdue teams I have seen in the 20 years since I started following Purdue. The 1999-2000 Elite Eight team under Keady, and the 2008-2009 Sweet 16 team (when Hummel angered the ACL God). BTW, I was a Krannert major / liberal arts minor the same time as Brad Miller and Drew Brees, and took classes with them....never suspected they would turn into an NBA All Star and a Super Bowl MVP.
I'm excited to see Nojel's career unfold. We've had great players in the Purdue uniform, including two overall #1 NBA picks (only Duke and Kentucky have more, with three each).....but I have never seen one like Nojel before. I like this entire recruiting class and think the next 4 years will be a golden era of Purdue basketball.
If it's your first experience spending extended amounts of time on a major college basketball forum, please allow me to share three observations.
1. Mind the trolls. Purdue has won more Big 10 conference titles than any other team, we are also the defending champions, plus Matt Painter's recruiting is on an upswing. This always brings out the trolls. Trolls are posters from rival schools (largely IU and Michigan State), or occasionally are fair-weather IU fans who bandwagon on Purdue success. Often, trolls pretend to be Purdue fans but it will be clear that their ultimate loyalties lie with IU and Michigan State. The population of trolls is correlated to Purdue's hardcourt success, so expect lots of trolls in the next few years.
2. Mind (some of) our fanbase. Purdue's fanbase tends to be more intelligent than that of schools like IU, and we also probably have a greater percentage of alumni in our total fanbase. However, it is a fairly conservative, engineering-dominated, place, so we have more than a few rather dour posters. I think of them as my grumpy grandpas. Fundamentally decent people, but not to be mistaken for a ray of Caribbean sunshine.
3. Mind the ups and downs. Purdue in general, and Nojel specifically, is in for an exciting time. In the next 4 years, we could see Final Fours and first round draft picks, or we might not. Here at Purdue - we work hard, we take no short cuts, and we keep a level head. I think this is most of all what I take away from my time at Purdue. There will be ups and downs - just let them come and we try not to be affected.
Look forward to having you around!
