Timeout

I have two questions. What is the rule for calling a timeout after a made basket? Izzo called a timeout after MSU scored. For some reason, I didn't think this was allowed.

Also, how/why did Izzo get that extra timeout rewarded? Did he really have one left?

Either team may call a time-out before the in-bounder has the ball ready for play. MSU called that time-out.

I think on the telecast they mentioned MSU had a time-out back for the review/"not-really-a-review"......which they then changed to a possession arrow call.

I think they said Purdue called it, sometimes Matt does it for defensive strategy. Initially all thought MSU called it.

You might be correct, it was confusing for sure.

They may have thought that originally, but Purdue only had two left, and they used both of those for the last two seconds. Painter did say he was going to call one after they got near half-court, but Izzo wanted to set his defense, which makes sense. He also made the press clearly aware of that in his stream-of-consciousness post-game.

MSU called their three remaining in the last 25 seconds. So - FIVE time-outs collectively. I think you may see a NCAA rule change, where you only get two in the last minute, something like that.

Tom Izzo was very complimentary of Painter and Purdue (and even mentioned Keady) - he was clearly mentally fatigued and looked a little worn out post-game....there's always something I guess if you want to look for it. He's a hall-of-famer, and I've poked fun at him as much as anyone here....just kind of ironic with some of his comments....good for a chuckle or two. JMHO

Thanks for clearing that up, guys. It was definitely confusing while watching the game and the announcers didn't help clear it up at all.

MSU called the timeout after they made the basket. There was some confusion because Purdue inbounded it and no one knew that the timeout had been granted.

The replay showed both MSU and Purdue called a timeout simultaneously, which caused the confusion that led the refs to use in-house monitors, TV monitors, and one ref ran to a nearby 7-11 store to check their monitor. Since nothing could be determined for certained, they used the possession arrow, which was pointing to Purdue, so they charged us with the timeout.

Painter should have at least gotten a free Slurpee out of it, then. :)
