Couple injuries today.
We posted in a separate thread soon after it happened that NT Eddy Wilson went down during a team period and had to be attended to. Ultimately, he was carted off the practice field. He was carted back to Bimel with maybe 10 minutes left in practice and had ice on the top of his right foot. He hung out in the tent and put some pressure on the foot but didn't walk very far.
After practice, we were able to ask Darrell Hazell about Wilson's status. (We weren't supposed to have interviews today, either, but Hazell always has been accommodating with that kind of stuff.) Keep in mind Hazell literally was walking off the field into Mollenkopf to go straight to BTN interviews, so he hadn't had any kind of extensive convo yet with the medical folks. But he said he was told Wilson had an X-ray on the foot and "sounds like he's fine, just precautionary." (Super fast X-rays, no?)
Alex Criddle got the first-team defensive snaps in Wilson's absence. That kid came out of nowhere. (At least from what we'd seen.)
Backup LB Sawyer Dawson also appeared to suffer a lower-body injury. Didn't see it happen, but I saw Dawson on the sideline and he angrily slammed his fist into the turf. Certainly seemed like he knew it wasn't good. He was able to walk to the training tent afterward, gingerly.
We'd also mentioned Wednesday Da'Wan Hunte didn't finish practice with an apparent injury. He was out again today, working in the "pit" for the most part, and had a compression-type sleeve on his right leg up to below his knee. Tim Cason was getting first-team reps in Hunte's place. (Norwood continues to be the other CB.) Hazell said Hunte got kicked in the calf and he should be back in a few days. I'd suspect that'd mean in time for the first week of real regular-season practice on Tuesday. We'll see.
Also ...
• Was worried for a bit today when Cameron Posey wasn't at practice. He showed up at about 4:30, though. Assuming he has class.
• Two interceptions in 11-on-11 work (not vs. scout team). Leroy Clark jumped in front of a David Blough pass (may have been tipped, couldn't quite tell) with the 1s and Jimmy Herman intercepted Elijah Sindelar and returned it for a "touchdown." Best part of that play: Marcus Freeman ran onto the field and followed Herman to the end zone, and Ross Els came from the middle of the field to do the same thing.
• Mike Mendez got some snaps with the 1s at left guard and right guard. Maybe he'll spell King and Roos at points in the opener. McCann still as No. 1 RT, though Cermin was getting some 2 snaps there, while Neal seemed to get more 2 LT snaps.
• Hazell started practice about 30 minutes earlier than originally scheduled because he wanted to be outside and was a bit concerned about pop-up storms in the forecast for 6 p.m.
• BTN was on campus. They did interviews with Hazell, Els, Malone, Blough and Bentley, I believe. Didn't see the players go up, but they were all lingering around the set, which was inside Mollenkopf. Wish I would have asked when it was going to air. My bad.
