I have learned not to blog immediately after a loss but having had some time to reflect I will offer some thoughts

Nevada made better adjustments at half than did our staff...
While I believe in Brohm he appears to have a difficult time getting his team ready at the beginning of the season for the second year in a row. We shall see how he does against Vanderbilt, but 0-3 last year and now 0-1 to start this year, especially against teams we should beat!
Lack of speed in the backfield is frightening, hopefully, someone will emerge as the season progresses

It's early but Vanderbilt will have far more talent than Nevada so I hope we come prepared to play and also to seal the deal if we get the lead and put them away!

With 3 or less turnovers the team easily beats Nevada. Unfortunately, they happened. I think the coaching staff took the loss as an embarrassment and hopefully the players respond and come out swinging at home.

I agree with this. Not any sort of consolation, but there were a lot of teams that had mistakes over the weekend. We just made terrible ones that is very hard to come back from.

If I could give Brohm one bit of advice, schedule a preseason scrimmage with some team and get the rust out early for both the staff and the players. I don't think he has won a single game to start the season and while we do get much better as things go on, it'd be nice to not start behind the 8 ball.

While I'd like to point out that first loss in his tenure was against a team that nobody thought we had a chance with (with a Heisman candidat on it, no less) at a neutral venue that was 2/3rds red, and we STILL almost pulled off the upset, I agree about the scrimmage and will go one step further; that first game needs to be at home against a cupcake. Purdue has a a history of laying an egg for opening road games, so somebody should be paying attention. There are 2 I can think of that we won in the last few decades, Cincinnati and Arizona State, and they were uncomfortably close. Take a cupcake at home, get the rust out and play whoever wherever in weeks 2 and 3. Edit, I had Wake Forest in here, but that was actually the second game of the season.

Another Burke blunder.

I agree on the cupcake thing. You see all the top programs doing it for the most part so it makes sense. There was a lot of rust not only on the team but the coaching staff as well that needed to get ironed out and playing on the road against a bowl team bit us in the keister.

Even winning a close game against a cupcake is better than a loss on your first game and putting the team as a whole on a harder path forward. That is where we stand now really and while I think things will still be okay, there are a lot of ways to circumvent something like this in the future.

Yes indeed, a cupcake at home to start things off is the way to go. It would certainly help with getting the rust off of the players and make for a slightly easier road to a bowl, which is important during this rebuilding phase. As Sparky Anderson would say, a game won in April is one less that you have to win in September.

Not an excuse. But they should have never been put in a position to travel 2 time zones to a group of 5 team's home field for an opening game. Thanks Morg...

This is spot on!! At least we had no business going out there week 1!!! How about week 2. Thanks Morgan

Hate to quibble, but that's 3 time zones, Central, Mountain and Pacific.

I am torn. I understand you play the cupcake and get the rust off, but if you lose the game - It's the worst thing ever. Think of EMU last year. If you win - big deal, you should have won. If you lose, the sky is falling.

If we go back to that route, please no more Indiana States or Non-FBS schools. We are not IU and do not have to rely on (3) puds to make us look somewhat relevant.

IU non-conference games this year:

Ball State (4-8 in 2018) IU will say this is a great win at a Neutral Site.
Eastern Illinois (3-8 in 2018)
Connecticut (1-11 in 2018)

It is the same every year for them. Play three doormats and win the first three. They then act like they are a real program and talk smack. Then reality hits (that they have a High School coach) and they completely get destroyed in the Big Ten. Then, they lose to us in the last game to ruin their bowl game hopes.

I prefer the challenge of tougher opponents. I am not saying schedule Bama or Clemson, but I like our schedule being tough. If we have to play games like IU plays to make a bowl game, I would rather not make a bowl game. Was anyone excited to play a MAC team in the Little Caesar's Bowl? I wasn't. If we weren't pumped up about playing Western Michigan in a bowl game - how are we (or the players) supposed to get pumped about playing them in a regular season game?

I am disappointed in the Nevada loss, but I would rather lose on the road to Nevada than at home to Eastern Michigan.

So if you travel to play in Ohio, are you traveling one time zone? No. Going from Central to Pacific is traveling two time zones. Going from Central to Mountain is traveling one.

But beyond that, why is Purdue (or any school for that matter) above traveling to play an OOC game? Every school should have to play half of their OOC games on the road. Did Mizzou last year or Vandy this year feel that they're above coming to Purdue? That's just silly.

Purdue is playing with bigger guys with more stars, an upper classman at QB vs a freshman QB making his first start since his junior hs year, and the Boilermakers even used a flea flicker to score one TD....one could easily say that had this been game 2 with the Nevada QB having a game under his belt, the Wolf Pack could have won easily.

I thought the Boilers were completely gassed in the 4th quarter on defense...couldn't cover anyone and turned a Frosh QB into All American.

Sorry to only comment on the less important part of your post, but West Lafayette is in the Eastern time zone. ;-)

I think Brohm was a little overambitious scheduling an away game at Nevada the first game of the season. The late start and the need to acclimatize are significant disadvantages.

Brohm had nothing to do with scheduling this game. It was under contract since 2014. I would guess if up to Brohm, he'd have had a major meltdown with the former AD who committed for purely financial reasons

Knowing what I know about Brohm, he'd say "win the d@mn game and stop trying to blame someone else."

And, you know what? He'd be abso-d@mn-lutely correct. Too many people p*ssing and moaning about what turns out to be a complete lack of execution, so they're looking for a scapegoat.

But, hey, Brohm has nothing on the internet experts.

Look, your team won the game. But without 5 turnovers, your team isn't in it. You don't overcome at least 10 of those points without the muffed punts. Simple as that.

Need to develop a run game and also manage the clock better a keep our defense off the field until they get better.

I find it amazing to start a game at what is for one team 9:30 PM their time and 6:30 PM for the home team and then finish it after midnight for the visitors. Nothing wrong with an early afternoon Saturday start which was probably what was envisioned when it was scheduled. Nothing like getting TV involved to give one team a huge disadvantage, unfortunately us.

Oh, but without TV we wouldn't be subjected to this EFFING NONSENSE:

I got a kick out of a visit to Santa Fe a few years ago when there were several policemen on bicycles at the main square dressed similarly to the Reno 911 ones Too bad that they don't have a university there so that we could play at even higher altitude. But then, I could get my wife to go to the game.
