As I try to read many thoughts not just today, but in the recent past it seems that all of the thoughts could be put into two major themes and obviously there are hybrids...but will lean to one or the other. Do fans prefer a coach to play the odds or go with the gut? This is not a trick question, but one that all coaches face in all games. If the odds are played and don't seem to follow the odds, do you stay with the odds or go with your gut?

If you win with perseverance and teh odds settling into your camp, then it was playing within yourself and following the game plan...even if behind early when the odds were working against you...or late in the game if the odds are not working for you. If you don't win by playing the odds, was the coach too stubborn to abandon the odds earlier and go with the gut?

If you go with the gut and things don't work out, what was the coach thinking...everyone knows that wouldn't work. Why change what was successful whatever that was...D...O? Had the coach just went with his strengths we would have won..teh odds were. It is my opinion that coaches are like teachers in that it is an art. All coaches know or can learn many drills for improving things, approaches for attacking things and so knowledge is not the final answer either. Coaches achieve more with better talent and teachers accomplish more with better student...but both are an art ro so it seems to me. IMO, that feel for the game is crucial and it is tempered by the odds. Interesting that Lee Rose took the approach that his game plan was made before the game and he would bnot deviate...the ultimate play it by the odds which does win out over time....but maybe not a particular game. Anyway, with no right or wrong answer perhaps others have a lean?

I prefer the "go with your gut". I'll reference baseball as an example. I hate when managers take a pitcher out that's doing well just because of the righty/lefty matchup, or taking a starter out late in a game just to put a closer in. I know, hoops board, but I think you go with your gut in hoops also. I don't have a problem with CMP going with Cline to start, or Biggie guarding Wager, but what I don't like is that he doesn't recognize quickly enough that his game plan is not working and won't change until we're in a deep hole.

I like 4's take on this. I would lean more towards the "gut" for my coach. I would trust that his gut is really more of a studied analyzed "guess" and I would defer to his judgement. I just want him to be able and willing to recognize that the gut plan isn't working and have a plan B to try and be willing to do it quickly before said game is out of reasonable reach. Sometimes nothing works and it just isn't your day. I recognize that also.

I don't know if I would call it "going with your gut", but I would think most coaches make adjustments to the initial game plan based on new information as the game unfolds. There are some uncertainties going into any game, such as what is the opponent's focus is going to be, who is going to play well, how the game is being called, that bear themselves out during the game. I'm a big believer in momentum in basketball. When one of your guys is in the zone you feed him. When an opponent is in the zone you make them do something different.

Coaches send signals to players. Coaches think about improving each player for the future. CMP is at a point at which he is considering how each player will perform in the B1G tourney and in the NCAA. Sure, he want to win THIS game, he hates to lose THIS game, but he also want to position his team for the upcoming major tournaments. Take a look at baseball coaches who constantly battle whether to take a pitcher out now, which is the best decision for this game, or leave him in and show you have confidence in him, which is the best decision for the future. Benching Carsen sent a message to the whole team ... perform or else. Starting Cline sent a message ... play well and practice well, and I will reward you. These are both important messages to every player on the team.

By the way, baseball pays a TON to their cybermetrics experts ... who's only job is to feed the ODDS to the coaches. Just as those who make a lot in fantasy sports ... or in Vegas .. PLAY THE ODDS.

Do you think when Spike playes other team can play 5 on 4 on defense?

..and I think that would be a consistent thought for going with the gut. My post was not intended to discuss anything other than odds or gut...not that cline couldn't be mentioned...just not the general thoughts I was trying to get.

I just started reading (killed three moles the last 24 hours) and doing some taxes, but I'll tip my hand...I think there is a place for both. I think the gut people are more likely to say...why use the clock when you were playing so well adn the odds look at the clock as a huge variable in the closing minutes. Your lack of quick recognition to what you saw with Wagner is consistent with the gut. Again, I think there is a place for both...
