As I was reading an article, Coach Hazell mentioned a very small detail about how guys had left locker stalls uncleaned and that he received a text message from team leaders about the perpetrators and how that issues could be corrected. He also mentioned this bit: "Before you had a cluster of guys that felt that way. Now you have a locker room of guys who feel that way...It’s not one component that helps you win a football game. It’s all the components that are combined."

Now, we all know that the leadership of Danny Hope was incredibly short sighted and that he was very much so a players coach. This tends to be one that allows players an incredible amount of freedom and relaxed atmosphere. The thought that came to mind was this: As bad as the program looked from the outside with blowout losses, horrible onscreen interviews, and a continued decline in recruiting and obvious football strategy...what if the inside was even worse? What if the inside of the program was so incredibly bad that it spilled to every other facet of the program? By inside, I mean what occurs inside the locker room and the culture of responsibility and focusing on every aspect of football and not simply showing up for Saturday. In that regard, would you expect a quick turnaround and any coach to be able to come in and be highly successful?

If that thought is true and the program was in fact that toxic from the inside-out, are we as fans finally starting to see the jump in improvement now that there are no Hope players left on the roster? Not only that, but it will take another 3-4 years before any players will have any contact with any aspect of Hope's players. Would it be a stretch to think it may take 5-7 years to rebuild the program instead of what we expect as fans should be 3-4?

I was guilty of jumping ship in the first half Saturday after seeing an abysmal second quarter. I came back and ate my crow and gave credit to the coaches for making adjustments and improving throughout the 3rd and 4th quarter to put the game away..something we haven't seen as fans in a very long time. If Purdue is able to win this weekend, that will be the most telling game of where the program is heading in a very long time. Win and it appears that the program is finally done sinking and is on the rebound...lose and be competitive shows there are improvements to point to...a loss of 17 points or more and it shows that no appreciable gains have been made to warrant another year from this staff and a reboot is necessary.

I think you're going to get slaughtered for posting that.

That said, I think there is some truth to what you are saying. I also think that Shoop was one of those "Saturday" guys and didn't really care about the prep and reps that went into getting there....he just wanted to show up and play. I think the team looked super prepared to play on Saturday. There were what, 2 penalties? Execution was up all across the board.

Now, because of the negatives in his first 3 years I truly think he is bowl or bust this year....but not only do we have 5 winnable games left on the schedule, I think we can pull off some upsets vs. opponents that don't come game to play. Cincy, Nevada, Maryland, NW, Ill and IU are very beatable.

At this point, the proof is in the pudding. Go win 6 and we can talk about keeping you.

i also think that looking at 1 bad quarter of football across 48+ that are played in a year is silly.

look at almost the first 20 minutes of the FSU vs. Ole Miss game last night...

I was encouraged by the adjustments made in the second half by both coordinators. Just because we are playing poorly doesn't mean it will carry on to the next play, series, drive or game. They at least showed that much to me on Saturday.

He's said that before. The only difference between thrn and now is The Shoop, The Whole Shoop, and nothing but the Shoop.

It still pisses me off how we went to a power running game with Akeem Hunt and Rob Henry. That team was built for the spread read option. No wonder they couldn't keep players engaged.

All sins will be forgiven with Wins.

He has to win. 35k at the home opener isn't going to keep him employed.

Not even positive a lower tier bowl is enough

Lots of winnable games left. I think it will be abundantly clear by the end of the year which way things are heading

So Hope's teams left a mess in their lockers, and Haze's teams have left a mess.... somewhere else.

So we beat an average EKU team and now some believe building a team of 2 -3 star talent will make us relevent and competitive so DH should stay?

That isn't actually what I said at all. What I attempted to explain was a potential reason why the team has struggled beyond a crappy head coach. I believe there are other factors that have been at play beyind just that. I do know that there was massive dissent between Shoop and Hudson and that it was obvious money was being diverted from the football program for other projects...I know that stacks the deck but a team doesn't struggle this monumentally without other aspects having an effect, imo. It doesn't change the fact that with a new AD, a brand new facility, a new network contract, and improved funding to the program, that a new head coach is needed...just trying to find rationale arguments for the struggling.

Why worry about what wil or will not happen after 1 game! By season's end it will be crystal clear on what Purdue should do with the Football Program! My ONLY concern is that the new AD doesn't fall for the old trap of extending the Head Coaches contract before the end of the season for that tired excuse "I can't recruit due to the short years left on my contract BS".

He was basically brought in to hire a new football coach. I think it will take A LOT to let Hazell stay.

Extensions don't really matter that much, and come with little guaranteed money. When Hope was extended, his buyout was reduced a little and spread out over a few more years. I think Purdue holds all the chips....even if Hazell goes 6-6. We can hook him on a short term extension (say 2 more years) reduce the buyout by 500k total, and spread the payment of his remaining guarantee out over a longer period if we were to let him go in the future. Basically, making sure his next 2 years ARENT guaranteed and that his previous guarantee shrinks a bit and isn't as big of a hit all at once.

If Hazell goes 6-6 and balks at the above.....easy for Mbud to say ok....youre 12-36 as our HC and not my guy.....BYE!!

I think the season will sort itself out. If he wins 5 or less he should definitely be canned. If he wins 6 regular season games and one of those is beating IU....then to me it's 50/50 based on what the AD thinks from seeing things on the inside. If he wins 7 plus takes the team to a bowl, then he keeps his job.
This team is talented enough against this schedule to win at least 6 games.
I think it will be pretty clear by seasons end what should happen...unless we land on 6 wins...which I think people can still argue one way or another.

Agreed. 6 wins and a 4th consecutive bucket loss= scram.

The buy out amount is the buy out amount. 4 mil is still 4 mil whether it's over 2 years, or four. Purdue doesn't benefit at all from distributing the buyout over more years. Actually, Purdue would want the buyout to reduce at a faster rate. If bobinski were to extend him, it better come with a clause to eliminate or greatly reduce the buy out value, not spread it out into the future.

I would say 6+ wins he gets another year, 5 wins maybe.

Two stories I heard really bother me. MB selected the OC and DC and Hazell wanted to bring his complete staff over and MB said no.

Why he would agree to either of those is beyond me. He should have talked to Coach Tiller or Painter first.

He is gone unless he can beat a bunch of FBS teams (6 min.) this year. With the weak schedule anything less means nothing. Nice that they adjusted at half but beating EKU proves nothing.
