That was completely reasonable if not likely. I mean I would hope that we beat Northwestern and I don't think Illinois will be very good, but this team could very easily start the conference season 1-6 or 0-7. Could also lose 2 in the non conference.

Simple.. you have the guy who ran the number 3 defense at Illinois last year. When he got there they were like 98th. He took them to 29th in year one without the transfer portal. They had no big time recruits who made this happen. On the other side, harrell’s West Virginia offense was ranked 1 spot after brohm last year. With the portal, they have at least a passable answer all across the field..
The biggest question marks are what? Right tackle where Marcus Mbow can kick out?
You could say a lot of things but that doesn’t mean the evidence is there.
Let’s talk Va tech. I watched their cover 3 summer school. They had a historically bad QB last year .. he’s in the mix to start this year because the Baylor transfer they brought in hasn’t played much. Their offensive line was bad and they don’t think it will be much better. Their own guy doesn’t know where a pass rush will come from or who the middle linebacker will be.. they tried four in the spring and no one took the job. No solid option.

Does that really sound like a team with a historically bad QB who hasn’t been beaten out, a bad run blocking OL, no pass rush and no middle linebacker will win?
Watch these and tell me what team you’d be more scared to be a fan of..

Exactly.. sims and his 58% completion percentage, 5 TD and 3 INT are better than card (69%/7/1) why? Cause he plays for Nebraska now and Tom Osborne used to coach there?
Nebraska probably won’t go to a bowl game and even if they didn’t play Purdue I’d pick most of the big ten west to clown them in rhule’s first year.
You always come pretty hard with it, I'll give you that. Probably the biggest difference between us is that I am open to the possibility that Walters is a complete disaster HC hire. You really seem to have a lot of belief in him, but reality is it's more likely he's not a great HC.
As far as the roster goes, I've not seen much from anyone to inspire much confidence. If Card isn't really good, this team will be terrible.
I’m operating under the premise that card will be really good. He was a great air raid QB who wasn’t in the air raid at texas, and his stat line when he played was nice.
You can look at his stat line and ask the question. “What if he isn’t really good”.. okay.. look at the kids who transferred to Nebraska and Illinois and answer that same question?
As to walters, you tell me this…

Now.. for the naysayers, I’m on the wagon now. 2023 could present a couple issues that are brohm’s doing. In 2024 there will be no question. He is going to bring in some absolute beasts in the portal once people see he’s no joke.
Keep in mind. I was the worst guy in the world to SD boiler last year for saying we’d only go 8-4 and probably still win the division.
My predictions are based on 4 things being true:
1) card is healthy
2) mockobee is healthy
3) offensive tackles are healthy
4) inside linebackers are healthy
If those 4 things are true and we go 5-7 you can serve me up all the crow you want for one off-season

And I would say just wait till next year .. a lot of guys like a sulaiman kpaka or mershawn rice.. even if they are okay when they enter games; they’ll be told thanks but no thanks about returning in 2024
You can't change it to an offensive guy for your hypothetical here. If Walters was an offensive coach, I would be more confident in him. We just were brought back from complete futility by a guy simply because he's a great offensive coach and nothing more. Also this is Purdue and we just had sort of a dream season...and ended with 6 Ls with a cakewalk schedule. 4-8 is waaaay more likely than 8-4. Not even close.
Uh, I was just randomizing my example but if you changed it to defense I’d say the same. This is Purdue, where Jack mollenkopf was a defensive coach.
And again. Brohm’s offense was ranked 56th last year. Harrell’s offense was 57th. If Walters was bringing bielema ball you’d have a point.
So.. you’re including a loss to Michigan after the regular season by less than Ohio state lost and a loss to LSU without all our draftees…

Yeah you're right man Ryan Walters and Graham Harrell are going to revolutionize offensive scheme in the B1G. You're off the rails now bringing up Jack Mollenkopf and Tiller's background as an assistant.
Do you also want to throw out the Iowa and Wisconsin losses? How about Syracuse? Penn St. shouldn't count either, being the opener and all.
I am 41 years old and Purdue has had 1 season with less than 4 losses in my entire life. Our "dream seasons" come with 4. But this team with a brand new HC with zero experience, questions all over the field, and a tough schedule has zero chance to go 4-8 and will likely be 8-4. Whatever you say, you have this all figured out.
Uh.. Ryan Walters has revolutionized defense in the big ten. He made every team except Purdue in the big ten west completely one dimensional.
No I don’t.. it was an 8-4 team that I believe is bringing in a coach that won’t let some positions just whistle in the wind. They lost 4 regular season games.
Jack mollenkopf didn’t have head coach experience before taking over at Purdue. In your 41 years, new coaches didn’t have the portal.
I’ll give you an example. Brohm went 6-6 his first year. He had to take some woof recruits late in his first technical class and had no way to address weaknesses that he had nothing to do with. If he had a way to add a wide receiver of Jamal Edrine’s talent level .. instead of rolling with Gregory Phillips.. or having to put Kai Higgins and Geo reviere on the field in year 2… you dont think he could have won 2 more ball games? Brohm never was a p5 head coach before Purdue

I'm kind of w/ you on this topic, so far I'm impressed w/ the recruiting but this is going to be his first year as a HC and there will be some learning to do. Also the schedule is very tough. We've seen the HC at nd have some bad in game decisions and ?able losses. Look at the philly eagles too, Surriani was called out on the carpet plenty of times in his first year. I think we are going to have to be patient w/ Walters. I always go on the low side predicting W's, and I think we'll wind up w/ 4.
In his first year as DC at Illinois he took the 98th ranked defense in the country .. without the portal.. and got the to 29th. Freeman at ND never did that at a lower tier big ten program.
We can all have our opinions. I'm personally not too crazy about our chances given the harder schedule and the replacements that have to be made. Yeah we got a lot of players in the portal, but are they going to be any good? I'm positive about Walters long-term, but I just have a wait-and-see attitude about Ws and Ls this season. I'll be happy with 6-6.
Essentially all our players from last year who got drafted and led us to last season's record.
I thought you meant out transfers. The only one I’ll miss is Holstege. I mean yeah but we lost karlaftis and bell.
