Welcome to what has become now coined the "Weekly Upload" a shoutout to @Owlbird for the suggestion on a name that stuck and thanks to everyone who gave input on the name. This weekly thread has gone better than I ever imagined, so it will be a weekly Thursday or Friday thread each week with some topics that are hot, recruiting tidbits, and overall thoughts on the ongoings of Purdue Athletics. Obviously, this is "premium" content and I would very much appreciate you guys keeping it that way.
The Transfer Portal Giveth and Taketh
I was as shocked as all of you to see 4-star, former Mr. Football and a 3-year verbal commit to Purdue, Brady Allen put his name in the transfer portal. For whatever reason, he chose to do so, whether the new staff waited too long to reach out to him, or he did not like the new scheme, or whatever, it appears he went home for Christmas with a listening ear and decided to stay home. He will have plenty of suitors, obviously, he has taken three college snaps, but he is a 6-6, 235-pound former Mr. Football with 4 years of eligibility. The obvious suitor is Jeff Brohm and Louisville, though Jack Plummer just reunited with Brohm at Louisville, so if Brady is wanting to walk into a starting job, which should never be guaranteed to someone who has a career 8 yards passing, or not, that one makes the most sense and is very close to home. He committed to Jeff Brohm towards the end of his sophomore year of high school, so there is so obvious rapport there.
There are over 1400 athletes in the portal as it stands now, last year only around 35% found new homes, that won't happen with Brady, but just a fun number to look at when all of these players seem to think the grass is greener somewhere else.
As the portal taketh, it also giveth. The same day Allen chose to leave West Lafayette, Hudson Card chose to make Purdue his next home. I wrote extensively on Hudson's game in my film review and Jace interviewed his QB coach as well. If you want my opinion, I am much more comfortable with Card leading the quarterback room than what we had. Before Card committed to Purdue, the Purdue three scholarship quarterbacks had a combined 10 pass attempts combined with Alaimo having 7 and Allen with 3, We will never know what Allen would have been at Purdue now, I wish he would have stayed and competed with Card for the starting job, but Card will probably be the starter and we should all be excited for that. He does a lot of really good things. He was better than Quinn Ewers this year, but Texas paid Ewers 2 million dollars to come home with NIL and he was not going to be the starter when healthy, ya know?
As for the rest of the first period of the portal, it is open until January 15th, I would expect some movement and more of a list of who the new staff is trying to grab from the portal after the first of the year. Also, in terms of filling out the rest of the football staff, the American Football Coaches Association's huge convention is next weekend. I go yearly and it is pretty great, coaches from HS to the Power 5 are there looking for jobs, networking, and talking ball. At the convention itself, there are always interviews going down for positions, whether paid or grad assistants. I would say maybe mid-January the staff could be filled.
The Citrus Bowl
Yes, there is still a bowl game going on. I know many Purdue fans have lost excitement for this game with everything that has occurred over the last month, but these players that are representing Purdue deserve this opportunity to showcase their skills against a superior opponent. Purdue is obviously hurting with opt-outs and guys entering the portal, but, LSU has lost three of their four defensive linemen to the portal, a very talented wide receiver, and a plethora of depth players to the portal.
Purdue is currently a 15-point underdog and probably deservedly so with a lot of unknowns, but, sometimes being the underdog in these bowl games is fun. The guys are having a blast in Orlando it appears and should play free and loose. They have a great chance to upset Brian Kelly and this talented LSU team, then the Ryan Walters Era officially begins. Austin Burton, Tyrone Tracy, and the rest of the outgoing seniors are trying to make a statement win, as is Brian Brohm, who wants to become a head football coach someday.
In terms of attendance of players, Brady Allen, I don't think will be there. But, Branson Deen, Jack Sullivan, and Lawrence Johnson who are all in the portal will be there and are playing in the game, which seems like a weird thing to do, but maybe they want to improve their stock as well. The opt-outs that are headed to the NFL, AOC, Jones, Graham, Durham, and Trice I would expect not to be there, but maybe they paid their own way to come and watch their teammates play.
Basketball Non-Conference Play is Officially Over
Purdue rounds out their non-conference schedule this evening when they host an inferior opponent in Florida A&M. Purdue is a 36-point favorite this evening. Zach Edey is back after having the 24-hour flu bug, though it seems a few other guys are under the weather, including head coach Matt Painter. CMP had Terry Johnson do media availability yesterday due to his sickness and sent Paul Lusk to see 2025 priority, Trent Sisley, yesterday.
Overall, Purdue fans could not ask for the non-con to go any better, barring some type of setback this evening. Victories over Gonzaga, Duke, and West Virginia are some of the best non-cons wins Coach Painter has ever had. Of course, winning at Florida State is never easy either, beating a solid Marquette team and of course, winning the two Big Ten Ganes is never easy, especially in the middle of the holiday season.
I don't want to guess losses, I am not a fan of that. But, at some point, it will happen, and I expect it to happen a few times during the big ten schedule, to think otherwise is silly. It is a young team learning on the fly. The freshman wall is a real thing, but, so is the dominance of Zach Eedy, who is largely the most dominant player in college basketball. Purdue looks great now, but as I have mentioned, where will they be in March? I do think this team is built differently mentally and that can go a long way.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. Hopefully, after the first of the year, we will have a better idea of who Coach Walters and his staff are targeting in the transfer portal. As those offers come in, we will of course update you on our always-changing transfer portal page, and the sticky threads as well.
