I think a 'shadow' committee has started. I may consist of the AD and a few others. They are gathering names and looking who will likely be availble at the end of the season.
I don't think it is a formal committee but they will be looking at potential candidates through various sources.
I would not be surprised if some colleges have utilized a head-hunter in their preliminary searches.
The point is to get things rolling early enough to minimize the damage to another recruiting class. Getting a capable head coach on board early enough to impact recruiting is key.
I don't think that naming a new coach now versus the week following the regular season will have much to do with recruiting. Look at the recuits that DH2 is going after. Are we really going to miss them?
If Purdue hires a veteran HC or coordinator, he and his newly hired assistants will bring a number of players that were being recruited at their previous jobs. That will have a bigger impact overall.

Reading The Baton Rouge Advocates write up and extensive interview with Danny Etling in their sports section today, really makes me wonder if things had been different here his frosh year, maybe we would have a seasoned veteran QB now. The success of Ettling and contributions of Appleby saturday at FL are a direct reflection of the ineptness of Shoup and an indictment of Hazells coaching. To their credit, neither of these young men have ever criticized PU, Hazell or Shoup, at least not publicly-Class acts! Having said that David Blough has weathered the Haz mess admirally and will make him a better qb and person.... but......I sure hope its under a new HC next fall.
The question is, if you know he's not the guy, why not start a full blown search now?
You fire him now so everyone knows he is gone and you are moving on. Hazell sucked at recruiting and now he is dead man walking. What the hell is his pitch? "If they are stupid enough to let me stay you can come make history; Lose to IU 5 in a row, lose to Cincy at home no one else in the Big10 has done that in 59 years"
